2015 Standard Bank SA Schools’ Boat Race

The 2015 Standard Bank South African Schools’ Boat Race saw a total of sixteen boys Coxed Eights and thirteen girls’ Quads competing.

The event was hosted by St Andrew’s College and sponsored by Standard Bank. It truly was a benchmark for regattas in South Africa with a great atmosphere that could match that of any international regatta. Racing on the Kowie River, in Port Alfred, is a truly unique experience.

The girl’s events saw eight schools, three club crews and two composite crews taking to the water. The time trials always provides a challenge as one is racing against the clock and not against the other boats on the water. The girls placing were as follows:

A final: St Mary’s vs St Andrew’s
B Final: Holy Rosary vs St Stithians
C Final: Chisipite vs Clarendon
D Final: St Dunstan’s vs Germiston

Clubs
Composite 1 VS PGRC 1
Composite 2 vs Germiston vs PGRC 2

In the boys time trial the spread of times from 1st to 7th was closer than in most years. St Alban’s had the fastest time on the day.

A Final: St Alban’s vs St Stithians
B Final: St John’s vs St Benedict’s
C Final: Bishops vs St Andrew’s
D Final: Kind Edward VII vs SACS
E Final: Rondebosch vs Jeppe
F Final Parktown vs Grey
G Final Selborne vs Germiston

The finals saw some competitive racing in strong headwind conditions with margins staying within reasonable distances, however the closest race of the day was definitely the Boys C final with St Andrew’s College and Bishops staying neck and neck the whole way down the course. Bishops managed to edge their nose in front in the last few meters taking fifth place overall. St Alban’s proved their class with a hard-fought victory against St Stithians in the A Final. St Mary’s continued their dominance of the girls event with another victory against a game St Andrew’ School crew in the closely-contested girls A Final.

The final results for the girls were as follows:
