Cricket vs Woodridge College

It was not the most disciplined display of batting on Lower on Saturday vs. Woodridge, but it was a day for the bowlers which produced an exciting end for the attentive crowd which steadily grew throughout the afternoon. St Andrew’s College won the toss and were prepared to take on the pitch with the bat, which was expected to assist the bowlers early on. On 44/0 St Andrew’s looked well set for the morning session, but Staunton Goliath’s accurate swing bowling still looked threatening. Some poor shot selection coupled with some sound bowling skills found Woodridge on top with St Andrew’s in a pickle on 93/5. St Andrew’s College looked like restoring their innings with Bruce Phillips but a risky run to mid-off saw the athletic Jade De Klerk hit the stumps with Bruce Phillips well short and St Andrew’s stumbled to 146 all out.

Woodridge chipped away at the total and were very well placed on 90/3 with Daniel Biggs at the crease and striking it well. However James Quarmby’s leg spinners were starting to upset Woodridge’s rhythm. Daniel Biggs was caught in the deep which brought about a mini collapse and Woodridge’s turn to feel the pressure on 107/7. Jade de Klerk showed great maturity in steeling the strike and steering Woodridge closer and closer to victory, but played one onto his stumps in search of one more single off the bowling of Craig Stow. It came down to Woodridge needing 15 more runs and College one more wicket. The Woodridge bowlers steered their team to even up the scores on 146 apiece. Captain Anthony Dakin brought his fielders into the inner ring and Craig Stow went searching for one last bit of assistance from the pitch. Stow found some bounce outside off stump and with it the edge of the bat through to Dakin and a resultant tied match. It was an exciting end to a match played in good spirit, well done to both teams!
