Cricket vs Grey High School

The St Andrew’s College 1st XI compiled a competitive 1st innings total vs. Grey High School in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. After being put in to bat in favourable bowling conditions, St Andrew’s fought their way into a solid position of 123/2 at the 25 over drinks break. College then made the error of losing the two in batsman Stuart Hobson (47) and Gordon Everard (34). Bruce Phillips and Tom Lane had to restart the building process. Fortunately they were up for the challenge finishing the College innings off on 232/8 and along with it some momentum for their bowling innings. Bruce Phillips played a mature and vital knock of 50 not out. David Masterson bowled well for Grey in the middle overs picking up 3/42.

St Andrew’s College started poorly with the ball and Grey took full advantage. Grey were very well placed on 30/0 after just 5 overs but a push to mid-wicket by Liam Lindsay off the bowling of Tom Lane gave College the “hole” they needed. Tom Lane picked up another key wicket of David Masterson which gave Anthony Dakin and his team the opportunity to set their spinners up for the middle overs. Mathew Breetzke (76) played beautifully for Grey but College picked up wickets at regular intervals dismissing Grey for 169 and winning by 63 runs. Tom Lane (3/13) and Simon Taylor (3/32) picked up some key wickets but it was College’s bowling as a unit after drinks which caused the rate required to steadily climb and along with it the necessary score board pressure needed to win the game.
