From 11 to 13 September, eight College boys participated in The Inter-Provincial World School’s Debating Tournament hosted by Hudson Park in East London. The purpose of the tournament is three-fold: to select junior and senior provincial teams to represent the Eastern Cape at the National Tournament later in the year and to select the top ten speakers in the province and to rank the schools in the Eastern Cape.
Geir Wilson, Jonathan Gouws and Daniel Roodt made up the junior team with Usama Anjum, Brandon Starr, Abongile Dongwana, Rorke Wilson and Alex Holmes making up the senior team.
The tournament consists of a single prepared debate followed by five rounds of unprepared debates and various selection debates and final debates. The topics dealt with issues such as colonialism, HIV confidentiality, the makeup of the Judiciary, sexuality, public shaming on social networks and the prevalence of leaderless movements.
The crowning moment for College was when the individual rankings were announced: Geir Wilson was ranked 1st in the Eastern Cape, as well as being selected for the team to represent the Eastern Cape at Nationals hosted by Treverton in December.
