K-Day Rugby

St Andrew’s College hosted a fantastic K-Day with rugby and hockey happening throughout the week. The campus was abuzz with excitement. Saturday was a successful day for the rugby club as teams performed well on the day, and some excellent rugby was played. Special mention needs to be made of the U14A, U15A and U16A who all recorded emphatic wins on the day.

There was a lot of excitement around the 1st XV game and this was evident in the first half. Both Kingswood and College were trying to spread the ball but errors were letting both teams down until Kingswood slotted a penalty to give them the early lead. This seemed to settle some nerves and both teams were sparked into action as play moved from side to side. College rounded off a fantastic move that started inside their own 22 as Seb Mulders crashed over in the corner after a good break by captain Tom Lane. College took the lead 7-3 and this is how it remained until half time.

The second half saw College go straight onto the attack and converted a try early as Tom Lane went over, under the poles and flyhalf Anthony Dakin converted giving College a 14-3 lead. Kingswood’s persistent attack paid dividends as they scored twice in quick succession, giving them a sizeable 20-14 lead going into the last ten minutes. The College side was not done however, and came charging back. Seb Mulders went over near the poles only to be called back for an earlier forward pass. Tim Bloem was then adjudged to have been held up over the line and finally College managed to claw their way over the line for the deserved try to winger Tim Bloem. Time was up on the clock and the kicker faced a task no player wants to be faced with. He stepped up bravely but the kick went wide allowing Kingswood a K-Day victory 19 -20.
