Rugby vs Cambridge

St Andrew’s College had a full set of fixtures against Cambridge on the weekend. There was some exciting rugby played by all the teams throughout the day culminating in the 1st XV fixture on Lower.

The St Andrew’s team starting the match without six of its usual starters took to the field with a point to prove after a disappointing result last week. The new look team hit the ground running and Tim Bloem scored a scintillating try off the opening move of the match. St Andrew’s College quickly built more momentum and produced some good hands to put fellow winger Baron Boateng-Aidoo over in the corner and stretch the College lead to 12. Cambridge had their opportunities but some resolute defence kept them at bay. St Andrew’s then produced the play of the day as Boateng-Aidoo started a counter attack before Bloem was released up the left and cut inside to beat four would-be defenders to score under the poles and give St Andrew’s College a solid 19-0 lead into half time.

Unfortunately the pattern that has marred College performances of late raised its head again as after half time College let Cambridge back into the match through some silly errors and poor handling. This allowed Cambridge to narrow the lead to 19-14 and they were back in the game. Tim Bloem would complete his hat trick with 15 minutes to go as some good handling by the backs allowed him to sneak over in the corner. St Andrew’s College seemed to be holding its nerve and dominating the match but with 5 minutes remaining another dropped ball allowed Cambridge into the College 22 as they forced their way over for their third try leaving the score at 24-21 and a nail biting final five minutes lay ahead. However St Andrew’s College rallied and played some good rugby in the dying minutes to close out the match and secure a good win over Cambridge, 24-21.
