St Andrew’s College Shield Tournament

Over the weekend we hosted our annual water polo tournament, the St Andrew’s Shield Tournament. Participating this year were 26 teams from all over the country as well as from Zimbabwe. The tournament ran efficiently and good water polo was seen by some avid spectators.

College Pool A results were as follows:
Beat St Johns (Harare) 11-1
Beat Reddam 7-5
Beat Pearson 4-2
Beat Grey Bloem 9-1

The blues finished top of their pool and gained automatic qualification into the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals St Andrew’s beat Glenwood 4-3 in a thrilling water polo match played at high intensity and good quality. It was the first time in five years that St Andrew’s have managed to make the final of the Shield event.

In a much anticipated final between rivals Grey and College, the match started on an even keel with the score after four minutes being 1-1. As the match progressed it was evident that Grey were the more determined of the teams as they took a sizable 5-1 lead going into half time.

College seemed to regain composure and began playing more productive water polo. However, it wasn’t to be as Grey ran out comfortable winners 8-3.

It was an entertaining final and congratulations should go to both teams on the outstanding level of water polo which they produced.
