St Andrew’s College 1st VIII took to the water against a strong contingent from Selborne and Rhodes University. An effective start saw the St Andrew’s rowers taking an early lead on both crews sitting a quarter of a length up on the Rhodes University Eight. St Andrew’s had to work hard however managed to extend their lead. A very persistent Rhodes crew managed to sit with the St Andrew’s College crew, however every time they tried to make a move, College successfully absorbed any effort from their competitors and turned it around by managing to effectively move away. Into the last 250 metres, Rhodes persisted on the attack, but the St Andrew’s crew lifted their stroke rate and managed to hit 40 strokes per minute enabling them to claim the title of Eastern Cape Champions over Rhodes University. St Andrew’s College took a total of 14 Gold’s and a number of minor placings.
