24 for Smiley
St Andrew's College pupils ran 3335.6 kms or 8339 laps of a standard athletics track in 24 hours. The run was dedicated to Stuart "Smiley" van Oldenborgh, a Grade nine pupil at St Andrew's who died tragically in a plane crash in August.
The event took place on the College's Lower Field recently. The Grade 11 boys who are on the President's Award committee organized this highly successful fund-raiser in aid of the Grahamstown Amasango Career School.
At least two (and sometimes up to 120) runners were on the track at all times throughout the twenty-four hour period, with each lap being tallied by a team of counters as it was completed.
Bruce Blaine, the chair of the organizing committee said, "Smiley would have loved this, the challenge of using his abundant energy for others good". Blaine said that in addition to large numbers of pupils and staff of St Andrew's and DSG, members of the community surrounding the school joined in the run, each making a contribution, which, together with generous sponsorship pledges from a variety of sources is believed to have amount to about R12 000.

And they’re off…Boys and girls set off to run in relays for 24 hours
