DB Wylde Leadership Indaba - Prof. Bruce Rubidge
On Monday the 4th of October Prof Bruce Rubidge entertained a discerning crowd at the Highlander on issues such as extinction events, biodiversity, fossils and the green revolution.
Prof Rubidge, who is the Director of the Bernard Price Institute at Wits, was interviewed by two grade 11 learners (Kei-Ella Loewe from the DSG and William Cahill from St Andrew's College) as part of the DB Wylde Leadership Indaba. Earlier that day he had lectured various classes at St Andrew's on a spectrum of topics relevant to the current curriculum.
The compact crowd included palaeontologists and geologists from Rhodes University, teachers, numerous learners from the host schools as well as interested parents and towns folk, all of whom were keen to get involved with questions when the discussion was opened to the floor.
William Cahill and Kei-Ella Lowe had spent days researching the Professors history and interests and he in turn responded to their questions with enthusiasm in a way which was accessible to all the members of the audience.
Although the panel was elevated on a stage, the venue felt intimate and the audience felt part of a conversation as opposed to being detached, passive observers. Everyone left feeling they had enjoyed the company of a gentleman and a scholar rather than merely having received a lesson in Palaeontology.
