Binding Past and Present for the Future
In an unique and visionary bid to bind the entire, extended school family together, St Andrew’s College recently opened the Andrean Resource Centre as part of an educational and informative tool for the School.
Situated in the oldest room in the school, the Centre will always house displays celebrating the history and traditions of St Andrew’s. It is envisaged that the Resource Centre will be a living area, not just a room filled with historical memorabilia but a teaching facility and a place of creativity, sound learning and reflection. There has been an extremely positive response applauding not only the interesting displays but also the concept of a living museum.
Outgoing Chairman of Council, Mr David Herold, opened the Centre during the annual OA Tide which coincided with the 1950 and 1960 Reunions. After the traditional Chapel service and the laying of wreaths at the Clock Tower, a large group of Old Andreans, guests, staff and interested parties, gathered at the front door of the Centre for the official blessing by the school chaplain Father Gary Griffith-Smith and the cutting of the ribbon by Mr Herold.
Supporting this initiative are the St Andrew’s College Archives, housed in a modern document repository with special air vents, a dehumidifier, security system, fire detectors and a fire proof door. The repository houses extremely valuable historical items celebrating the history of the school. These include photographs, books, trophies, clothing and documents, some of which date back to the 1800’s. Recently the unique and priceless Graham family papers were donated to the school and are safely housed in the repository.
