The game on Saturday against Die Brandwag Hoërskool was a keenly contested affair. The St Andrew’s College 1st XV were however able to maintain their composure and show glimpses of the form that they have had during the season. The end score was a reasonably comfortable 32 – 17 win to St Andrew’s College.
The College 1st XV struggled to find their rhythm in the game as the opposition were very committed at the breakdown, willing to give away a number of penalties and eventually a yellow card in their efforts. The ferocity and numbers that they put into this contested area allowed for them to constantly disrupt the flow of the game and thus keep them in the game.
St Andrew’s did also play too much of the game in their own half and as such were not able to put the Brandwag side under enough pressure with their sweeping attacks. In the first half College were able to get into the Brandwag 22 meter area on two occasions and scored tries each time.
College had some good fluidity early in the second half and were able to score two tries in the first fifteen minutes. The rest of the half however was very stop start with both teams having niggling injuries due to the physicality of the game. Brandwag showed great character and fought hard right until the final whistle and were rewarded for their efforts with a try in the last movement of the game.
