NEC ASPERA TERRENT . EMBRACING NEW FRONTIERS
The Opening of the new Classroom Block at the Good Shepherd School
Date : 26th April 2010

The Good Shepherd School celebrated the opening of the new Classroom Block on Friday 23 April 2010. The celebrations began with a Thanksgiving Service followed by the opening ceremony. Dignitaries who attended the event were: Professor Geoff Antrobus (Chairman of the Good Shepherd Trust); Mr Mputumi Damane (Deputy Chairman of the PetroSA Board); Cllr V Lwana (Executive Mayor of Makana Municipality); Mr A Fetsha (Department of Education); Mr S Mavuso (Representative for the Minister of Energy); Mr Godwin Sweto (Vice-President of Corporate Strategy & Planning for PetroSA) and Mr Kwanele Butana (Chairman of the School Governing Body).

The school was originally owned by the sisters of the Community of the Resurrection of Our Lord, an order of Anglican nuns. It is the oldest Anglican Church building in South Africa which has been used continuously as a school.

In 2006 St Andrew’s College set up an independent Trust that would own the property and buildings in which the school is situated. The Good Shepherd school is a Government school and is therefore designated a Public School on Private Property.

In 2009, construction of the new double story classroom block began with funding from PetroSA. The block provides the school with eight beautiful and spacious classrooms and additional ablution facilities. During this year the second phase of the project will begin. This entails the complete renovation of the interior of the original school to provide a kitchen, staffroom, library, computer centre, hall and administration office to the school.
