Forty eight students and five staff members from DSG and St Andrew’s College flew to Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York via Dakar in North West Africa during the Easter holidays on an official tour that combined the interests of Drama and Design. This educational, yet fun filled tour, was packed full of wonderful experiences from sight seeing to participatory workshops. The educational value of the tour will be felt for a long time to come when the memories of famous icons like MOMA, the Guggenheim Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan, Times Square, Broadway and of course the shops of New York, will return again and again to enrich and please the minds of those very fortunate tour members. The quality of the art and design seen in both cities as well as the 8 theatrical performances seen, 5 of which were on Broadway, was high indeed and was a valuable experience for everyone. For some the tour provided the opportunity to experience what it was like to get lost in the New York subway system and for others it was a chance to buy the iPad on the day it was released. The tour was a rich visual and sensory experience that will be remembered for a long time to come. The students made an impact from many people they encountered on the tour, receiving positive comments on their behaviour and attitudes.
