York Senior, a Grade 9 pupil at St Andrew’s College, was selected to represent Border JKA at the National South African Championships held on 16 and 17th April 2010. The event was held at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg. York represented Border JKA in both Kumite (Sparring/Fighting against an opponent) and Kata (Sets of defence and attack movements against an imaginary opponent).
York received second place (Silver) in the Kumite Youth Elite Black/Brown Belt Boys in his category. The final bout was a very close contest with York losing three to two points in the dying seconds of the fight. This is the second year that York has won a silver medal at the championships.
He also made the third round in the Kata event.
It is a huge honour to be selected to represent Border JKA at this prestigious event as it is the largest Karate event held in South Africa and it is a great achievement to win a medal.
