The annual St Andrew’s College / DSG musical was a lilac explosion. With a cast of about 40 dancers, singers, actors and technical team, it was an evening high in energy and entertainment.
Bauke Snyman (HOD Drama DSG) and Sarah Seymour (Drama teacher DSG) wrote the script and then added some catchy ABBA tunes to keep the audience smiling for long after the final note faded.
The characters crept into your heart from the first scene. Steven Goldblum (Donald Ballentyne) with his stomach like a wash board and calves like a ballerina had the audience in the palm of his hand. He was well matched by the lips-licking hip-swinging Livonia (Fiona Fraser) who stole him away from his bride to be and gave Fernando (Ryan Dugmore) the opportunity to win her over. Vaughn (Nicholas Davidson) told the story of his secret recipe cookies to Ouma (Kei-Ella Lowe) who stole the show with her rendition of Does your mother know. And then the Rabbi enters and sings The winner takes it all breathtakingly beautiful.
The star of the evening however is Tali played by Amy Roux with a maturity, confidence and talent way beyond her years. She took the audience on a journey through the seven steps up to her disastrous wedding day and did so with flair and an angelic voice.
There was a Dancing queen (Liam Henderson) and strippers at the Hen’s party. There were platform shoes and high energy dancing. All in all, a night to remember by the beating of the drums, Fernando.
