St Andrew's College announces Scholar-elect for the Rhodes Scholarship 2009
Date : 12th October 2009

The Headmaster of St Andrew’s College, Mr Paul Edey, is delighted to announce that the Selection Committee of the St Andrew’s College/DSG Rhodes Scholarship has selected Mr Clive Eley as the Scholar-elect for 2010.

Clive was Head Boy of St Andrew’s College in 2005, the year of the Jubilee 150 celebrations. He was a singularly courageous and visionary leader of the school.

He was awarded Academic and Debating Honours, Captained the First XI Hockey team for which he received Colours, and played Cricket for the First XI for which he also received Colours.

He was a natural and talented actor, playing the lead in “Noah” and Percy Gilbert in Ingrid Wylde’s premiere production of “Iron Love”.

Clive’s academic career at Rhodes University has been meteoric.  He obtained his B. Sc. Degree with distinctions in Chemistry and Mathematics.  He achieved First Class credits in every course of his degree, was the top academic in Founders’ Hall every year, and on the Dean’s Merit List every year.

As a debater, Clive continued to craft an international reputation as an incisive and categorical competitor.  He represented Rhodes University at the World Universities Debating Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, as well as in Cork, Ireland. He was the South African representative at the World Universities Debating Council.

Clive continued to play Hockey for the RU First team and Eastern Province.  He was awarded the Golden Key Chapter Award in 2007 for outstanding scholastic, sporting and cultural endeavour, and took up the role of Community Engagement Officer.  His community engagement has been generous and extensive, involving the Khanya Maths and Science Club, repainting of Samuel Ntsiko Junior School, the Grahamstown Hockey Development Programme and the Currie Street Courts Project.

Currently, Clive is involved in research for a B.Sc. Honours degree with the eminent Professor Tebello Nyokong (OMB) in which he is exploring the anti-cancer properties of Phthalocyanines using photodynamic therapy.  Clive is looking to register for a DPhil research programme at Oxford University under Professor Edman Tsang which will pursue the development of novel nano-materials with bio-medical applications.

Clive Eley is a deep-thinking gentleman of rare potential.  He is a brilliant academic, modest and sincere humanitarian, and an exceptional thinker with a non-negotiable commitment to perfection.  The St Andrew’s College and DSG Community warmly congratulate Clive on this momentous achievement and will follow his career at Oxford University with great pride and admiration.
