Comrades star still holds record after 20 years

Frith van der Merwe, Comrades Marathon star and English teacher at St Andrew’s College has won three marathons and still holds the Comrades “down” (Pietermaritzburg to Durban) record for the last 20 years. In 1989 she finished first in the ladies section and 15th overall and broke the existing record. Her time was five hours and 54 minutes. Ian Laxton recently visited Frith at St Andrew’s and conducted an interview with her about her Comrades history. The interview will be aired on Sunday 24 May on the day that the Comrades Marathon will be run.
