K-Day crowds gather at St Andrew's College
Date : 22nd June 2009

The 120th Derby Day between St Andrew’s College and Kingswood College took place on Saturday 20 June 2009. A large crowd supported either red or blue. The sporting events were hosted by St Andrew’s College, the Diocesan School for Girls and St Andrew’s Prep this year and the weekend included junior and senior rugby, hockey and netball fixtures.

In front of a festive crowd at Webster Astroturf on Wednesday evening St Andrew’s beat Kingswood 2 -1 in a hard fought and entertaining First hockey match.

The highlight of the derby was the 1st XV rugby match, which took place in pleasant conditions on Lower Field and there was an atmosphere of excitement which had spectators on the edge of their seats. St Andrew’s put early points on the board through some well-worked tries, with Kingswood landing a long-range penalty by John Hale in response. Good set-piece play and incisive running from the St Andrew’s backs kept Kingswood under constant pressure and it was only resolute defence from Kingswood that kept St Andrew’s at bay. Unfortunately this pressure took its toll with Kingswood losing a number of players to injury.

The pattern continued after the break and St Andrew’s accumulated further points through a number of exciting tries. Although the match was never all that closely contested, Kingswood never stopped defending and put in a good effort all the way to the end.

Final score: St Andrews 43 Kingswood 3
Tries by: James Gotz, Grant Macdonald 2, Brian Makamure, Ross Campbell, Brian Skosana and Justis Luttig
Conversions: Nick Mills x  4
Penalty for Kingswood by John Hale.
