St Andrew’s College is one of the many local schools that has a social conscience and wanted to help celebrate Mandela Day in style with pupils becoming involved in a variety of activities that promote service and self-development on Saturday 18 July 2009.
Mandela Day is an annual celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and a global call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.
The pupils from the boarding houses at College decided to make their mark in a special way. Armstrong House had a little clean up in Somerset Street. Graham House had three group activities. One group played soccer and touch rugby at the Eluxolweni Shelter, another group visited the aged at Brookshaw Home and the third group did a litter clean up in the streets of Grahamstown. A group of boys from Merriman House worked at Hospice. Several groups from Upper House were involved in activities from cleaning out sheds on the school campus, clearing alien plants and picking up littler along African Street and the Kowie ditch. Another group planted vegetable seedlings in an attempt to support World Food day in October when they will give the veggies to a deserving group.
The boys of St Andrew’s College felt priveledged to be part of the global movement for positive change through their small actions and to be of service to their local communities.
