Out of a gathering, ill-omened sea storm begins a story of three sisters, each in love with the Lighthouse Keeper’s son; a story of three loves entwined that moves from a region of remote isolation to lessons in flying.

This love story in the style of magical realism -- yet having all the ingredients of a classical ballet – has been turned into a contemporary ballet called The Levitation Lesson.

The dancers are all from the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) and St.Andrew’s College, in Grahamstown; and the choreography is by Hermien Potgieter, dance teacher at the two schools.

The work is an excellent platform for learners to take their theoretical dance knowledge to the level of professional performance, and they are more than talented enough to rise to this challenge.

The profile of dance at these schools has been nurtured over past four years with the building of a world class dance studio, the inclusion of dance as a subject, and physical theatre, with its conceptual and choreographic components, having become a part of both the dramatic arts and dance syllabi.  The students are therefore becoming excellent exponents of physical performance and dance, including classical ballet, modern and contemporary.

With previous work by Ms. Potgieter having received positive critical acclaim, DSG and SAC now showcase this contemporary ballet at the National Arts Festival to allow their learners to see other companies and meet other dancers.  The learning opportunity has also been provided for other students to become involved in all aspects of theatrical production.
