KES Tournament 2012:
The College 1st Water Polo Team traveled up to Johannesburg over Half Term for the prestigious King Edward VII Tournament.  College got off to a slow start in their first game against Jeppe, and found themselves down 11 – 6 after the 3rd chukka. However they produced an exhilarating comeback in the final chukka to draw the match 12 – 12. In their second match of the tournament on Friday evening, College played well to beat Grey Bloem 12 – 5. The deciding game in their pool was against St Stithians early on Saturday morning. The game was close throughout, and at 7 – 7 at the end of the third chukka the game could have gone either way. College took an early lead in the final chukka, but St Stithians fought back, and they scored a controversial winning goal in the dying moments to beat College 10 – 9. With Jeppe winning their final game against Grey Bloem comfortably, College were knocked out of the main draw of the tournament on goal difference. In the Plate competition, College beat DHS 9 – 1, and then on Sunday morning played poorly to lose to Bishops 3 – 4. They came back to win their final game of the tournament against Parktown 10 – 2, finishing the tournament in 11th position. Although they were disappointed with their final placing, the College 1st Team can be proud of their record of 3 wins, a draw and 2 losses by a single goal in this highly demanding tournament. At the conclusion of the tournament, College was awarded the Fair Play Trophy for an unprecedented 3rd year in a row, in recognition of their fine performances and their impeccable behaviour and sportsmanship, both in and out of the pool. Well done to the 1st Water Polo Team. Would the captain Campbell Gregory please come up to receive the King Edward VII Fair Play Trophy. G Creese

Vides Tournament 2012:
On Friday and Saturday the College 1st and 2nd Teams took part in the prestigious Vides Water Polo Tournament in East London. On the first day, the 2nd Team lost to the first teams of St David’s, Selborne and Pearson, drew with Stirling 1st and Grey 2nd, and beat Alexander Road 1st. Two narrow losses on Saturday to Reddam and Kingswood meant they went into a playoff against St Charles, which they won 6 – 1 to finish 15th out of 18 sides. Faced with a demanding 6 games on the first day, the College 1st Team got off to a fine start with a big win over Hudson Park. After a close win against Crawford, they recorded comfortable wins against St Charles, Port Rex, Collegians and Woodridge to finish the day with 6 wins out of 6. After another comfortable win against Queens on Saturday morning, they played the deciding game in their pool against Grey PE. Despite a good performance, poor finishing meant College was 3 – 6 down with a few minutes to play, and although they fought back strongly at the end, Grey won the game 6 – 5. College dominated the quarter-final against Reddam, winning 7 – 1 to set up a semi-final against Pearson. College was in control of the game until the last few minutes, when Pearson grabbed 2 man-up goals to draw the game 4 – 4. In extra time, it was a similar story, with Pearson scoring in the last minute to eliminate College 6 – 5. The 1st Team put this behind them to record a fine 7 – 3 win over St David’s to finish the tournament in 3rd place, behind Grey and Pearson.

College hosted a number of matches against Grey and Selborne on Saturday, and despite the rainy weather, all 12 College teams were involved in fixtures.
College teams played a total of 24 matches on the day, winning 10 and drawing 2.
Highlights included the 2nd team's 10 - 3 win over Selborne, wins by the 3rd, 4th and 6th teams over Grey, and the 5th team's narrow win over Selborne's 3rd team.
The 1st Team played Grey in front of a large, supportive crowd at lunch time, and took an early lead through Stuart Stopforth. However, Grey gradually gained the upper hand in the second and third chukkas as they scored with a succession of counter attacks and some outrageous lob shots, while College's shots kept missing the target. Despite a late rally from College, Grey won the match 9 - 5.
In their match against Selborne, the College 1st team was in control from early on, and pressed home their advantage in the final 10 minutes to secure an emphatic 17 - 1 victory. G Creese

Water Polo News and Results 2011:

2011 Water Polo Fixtures

Grey Bloem U14 Tournament 2011:
The College Under 14A Water Polo team traveled up to Bloemfontein last weekend for the Grey College U14 tournament, which featured 20 of the top sides in the country.
College started with a narrow defeat against the winners of last year's tournament, Clifton, but followed this with comprehensive victories against the Johannesburg schools in their pool, Jeppe and Parktown. They nearly let things slip in their final pool game against Northwood, needing a last minute goal to eventually draw the game and qualify for the quarter finals.
Coming second in their pool, College had to face the powerful Grey PE side in the quarter finals, who had won their pool games by an average margin of 24 goals! College put up a strong fight, going down 9 - 3 in the end. Grey would go on to lose the final of the tournament by a goal to Reddam.
In the playoffs, College beat the hosts Grey College 7 - 2, and then finished off the tournament with a fine performance to beat St John's 7 - 2. This meant that they finished in 5th place out of 20 sides at this prestigious tournament.
My thanks to Mr Allan Miles for looking after the side in Bloemfontein, and to Mr Declan Cowen for doing a fine job as coach of the side. Congratulations to our U14A water polo players.

Assembly Reports 5 October:
Team Jerseys and Colours Awards
Water Polo Team Jerseys are awarded either to boys who have started 10 games for the 1st Team and played in 3 major 1st Team tournaments, or to boys who have played in 5 major 1st Team tournaments.
Water Polo Team Jerseys have been awarded to Matt Arnot, Martin Chandler, James Myburgh and Grant Rautenbach. Congratulations to them.
Colours for Water Polo are awarded to boys on merit, based on performances  for the 1st Team, provincial selection, gamesmanship, service to College Water Polo, and conduct.
Colours for Water Polo for 2011 have been awarded to the following boys:
Ross Daly, Campbell Gregory, Rirhandzu Hashatse, Michael Houghton, Buddy Kebble, Rupert Kieser, Scott McKenna, Stuart Stopforth.

SACS Tournament 2011:
The College 1st Team Water Polo traveled to Cape Town last weekend to take part in the annual SACS Tournament, featuring the top 20 schools' water polo sides in the country. As defending champions, the College team was under the spotlight from the outset, with an increased focus on their performances and some of their games recorded for television coverage.
Despite the added pressure, College started well with a convincing win against Northwood in the opening game of the tournament. However this was followed by a heavy defeat to the eventual winners, Pretoria Boys High. The team bounced back with an impressive win over a strong DHS side, but was disappointed to lose to the hosts, SACS, in a closely contested main game on the Saturday evening.
Sunday began with a disappointing loss to Bishops, and the team then needed to show all their character to fight back from 5 - 1 down against Selborne to secure a 5 - 5 draw. However, despite playing some good water polo, the day ended with narrow defeats to both St Stithians and Maritzburg College. Their tournament finished with an exciting 3 - 3 draw against Paul Roos on Monday morning.
College's pool turned out to be the strongest by some margin, with the top four teams in their pool finishing the tournament in the top four positions. The team has a number of younger players who will have learnt valuable lessons about the intensity of the games at this tournament and that any mistakes can easily result in defeat, and they will be stronger for it next season.
The College team represented the school with pride and received many positive comments about their sportsmanship and behavior at the tournament. Thanks are due to Matthew Kleinenberg for doing a fine job as coach of the side, to Jason Sileno for assisting the team as technical advisor, to the parents who supported the side at the pool and hosted them so generously, and to the large contingent of old boys who turned out to cheer on the side throughout the tournament. Congratulations to the 1st Team Water Polo.

Lost to Pretoria Boys High 1 – 6
Beat Durban High School 7 – 1
Lost to SACS 3 – 7
Lost to Bishops 1 – 8
Drew with Selborne 5 – 5
Lost to St Stithians 3 – 6
Lost to Maritzburg College 6 – 7

Sterrenberg U15 Tournament 2011:
After their fine performance in Cape Town last week, the College Under 15A Water Polo team traveled to East London this weekend to take part in the Sterrenberg tournament, hosted by Selborne.
College started with good wins against Jeppe and Selborne, but lost their third pool game to Wynberg. They finished the 1st day with a convincing win over Port Rex.
The second day started poorly, with defeats to Pearson in their final pool game, and to Paul Roos in the quarter finals. However they managed to fight back to secure 5th place in the tournament with a playoff win against Michaelhouse.
Thanks to Mr David Woker for his passionate coaching, to Mr Allan Miles for looking after the side in East London, and to all the parents who came out to support the team, and well done to the players for again representing the school with pride. Congratulations to the U15A water polo players. STERRENBERG TOURNAMENT RESULTS:

Ian Melliar U15 Water Polo Tournament 22-25 September:

The College U15A water polo side had a hugely successful trip to the Ian Melliar tournament held at Wynberg Boys High School in Cape Town. They played 7 games and won 5, drew 1, and lost 1, and finished as runners up in the tournament out of the 20 sides participating.
The standard of water polo at this tournament has grown rapidly and in only its fifth year it is rated as the most prestigious U15 tournament in the country.
Being in a difficult pool against top rated sides such as Grey PE and SACS, the College team overcame a lot of pressure to qualify for the top 8 playoffs. They managed to end top of their pool and were then able to play with great self-confidence in the quarter- and semi-finals, winning well against Paul Roos and Pearson.
In the final, Wynberg were better able to use all of the scoring opportunities that they created for themselves early in the game, whereas College consistently hit the woodwork with their shots on goal. Although they were disappointed with the result of the final, the consistent and disciplined way in which they had played leading into the final impressed everyone who saw them play.
The team would like to thank David Woker for his enthusiastic and uplifting coaching as well as the parents at the tournament who not only provided moral support but also went out of their way to ensure that the boys were well "fed and watered" for the duration of the tournament.
At the end of the tournament Joey Slack was selected as the best goal keeper of the tournament and he and Matt Andrews, who won 5 Man of the Match awards during the tournament, were selected for the prestigious Tournament Side.

U14A Team, who won the 4th League and were also unbeaten.
U14B Team, who won the closely fought 5th League.

Kingswood Under 15 Tournament 2011:
The U15A Water Polo Team took part in the Kingswood U15 Tournament over Half Term.
They won their important first pool game against Selborne 5 - 3, and thereafter they dominated their pool games, winning comfortably against Stirling, Kingswood U14A, Graeme, Woodridge and Port Rex. This meant they finished top of their pool, to set up a semi-final against Pearson.
The semi-final was a much tougher contest, with College winning 2 - 1 to progress to their second final of the season. The final against Grey PE was another tough and tight encounter, and Grey eventually won the match 5 - 4. This meant College finished 2nd out of the 14 teams competing in the tournament.
Well done to the U15, team on another excellent performance.
G Creese

KES Tournament 2011:
The College 1st Team Water Polo traveled up to Johannesburg over Half Term for the King Edward VII Tournament - recognized unofficially as the national schools' tournament, as with all of the top schools in the country competing, the water polo is tougher and of a far higher standard than anything else in the country.
College's lack of acclimatization cost them dearly in the first game of the tournament against Pretoria Boys, and they lost the match heavily. However they bounced back that evening with a fine performance against Grey Bloem, winning 14 - 6.
On the second morning, College again played some excellent water polo to beat last year's winners, Parktown, 11 - 5, and set up a playoff against Maritzburg College.
The match against Maritzburg was tightly contested, and an exciting finish saw the match tied at 9 - 9, with College progressing to the quarter-finals by virtue of scoring more goals in the pool games.
College played some of their best water polo of the season in the quarter-final against St John's, and with the score at 5 - 6 at the end of the 3rd chukka, the match could have gone either way. However 2 unfortunate goals from rebounds at the start of the final chukka meant that College had to take risks to try and get back in the game, and St John's capitalized to win the match 10 - 5.
This meant that College finished the tournament tied in 5th position, and although they were disappointed not to progress further, this still represented an outstanding achievement by the College 1st Team, given the extremely high standard of this tournament. They can now genuinely be considered amongst the top 8 teams in the country.
At the conclusion of the tournament, College was awarded the Fair Play Trophy for the second year in a row, in recognition of their fine performances and their impeccable behaviour and sportsmanship, both in and out of the pool.

St Andrew's Shield Tournament 2011:
The annual St Andrew's Shield Water Polo Tournament took place at the College and DSG Pools on Saturday and Sunday. 16 teams took part this year, including two highly rated teams from outside the Eastern Cape - Clifton School from Durban, and Reddam House from Cape Town.
The College 2nd and 3rd teams competed in the Plate competition, and can be proud of their efforts. The 3rd team won 3 of their 5 matches and finishing 5th overall, ahead of the 1st teams of Hudson Park, Port Rex and Graeme. The 2nd Team also won 3 matches, losing in the semi-finals of the Plate competition to the eventual winners, Grey 2nd team, and finishing 4th overall.
The Shield competition was keenly contested, with all 8 sides showing they had the potential to win the tournament.
The College 1st Team won their opening pool game against Selborne 12 - 4. Against Clifton, College was unable to convert their opportunities and lost 4 - 1. In their final game, College beat Kingswood 8 - 3 in front of a large crowd to qualify for the quarter-finals in second place in their pool, behind Clifton.
College produced a vintage performance in the quarter-finals to run away 9 - 1 winners against Pearson and set up a semi-final against Reddam.
The semi-finals produced some top quality water polo, with College fighting back from 3 - 1 down in the final chukka to draw 3 - 3 with Reddam. An exceptional goal from Reddam in extra time eventually knocked College out 4 - 3.
In the 3rd place playoff, College showed their mettle to beat Clifton 4 - 3 in another thrilling encounter, while in the final, Reddam just managed to hold off Grey, winning 3 - 2.
This was a fine effort by the College 1st Team, in which they found some consistency in their performances and played their best water polo of the season so far.
The tournament side selected at the conclusion of the tournament included 3 College players: Michael Houghton, Stuart Stopforth and Rupert Kieser. Well done to them on an exceptional achievement.
Wonderful weather, big crowds, and some highly competitive and top quality water polo made this year's St Andrew's Shield tournament a great success. Thanks to all those who came and supported the College teams this weekend and contributed to an electric atmosphere around the pool. Special thanks to all those who helped out and worked so hard to make the tournament a success, in particular Mr Harley Searle and Mr Allan Miles for looking after all the games at the DSG Pool.
Congratulations to all the College water polo teams that took part in the tournament this weekend.

Vides Tournament 2011:
On Friday and Saturday the College 1st Team took part in the Vides Water Polo Tournament in East London.
Faced with a demanding 6 games on the first day, College got off to a fine start with 10 - 0 win over Collegians. They followed this with a 4 - 4 draw against Pearson, a 6 - 2 win against Woodridge and a 14 - 1 win against St Charles. After a shock 6 - 7 defeat to Grey 2nds, College's tournament looked to be heading for an early conclusion, but they then produced an outstanding performance against tournament favourites St Albans to win 6 - 5.
College started the second day with an 11 - 0 win over Hudson Park to qualify for the quarter finals against hosts Selborne. However they started the quarter final poorly and never recovered, losing a disappointing game 1 - 4. In their playoff against Jeppe they produced a tired performance to lose 2 - 4, finishing the tournament in 6th place out of 16 sides.
Despite some excellent performances, inconsistency is still a major problem for the College 1st Team, and they will have to work hard to overcome this for the demanding tournaments coming up in the next 2 weeks.
Well done to the First Team Water Polo players.

Port Rex Tournament 2011:
The College U15A and U15B teams took part in the Port Rex U15 Water Polo tournament held in East London over the weekend.
As the only B team in the tournament, the U15Bs put up some good performances, drawing their matches against Queens and Kingswood U16, and beating Dale 8 - 2. The players gained invaluable experience in what for many of them was their first major tournament.
The U15A team started on Friday with an 8 - 1 win over Kingswood U16 and a 15 - 1 win over Dale. After a 1 - 1 draw with Pearson, they finished the first day with a 6 - 2 win over the hosts Port Rex and a 9 - 2 win over Queens U16.
They started the second day with an emphatic 6 - 1 win over Selborne, a 7 - 3 win over Stirling and a 10 - 1 win against the U15B team. This put them into the final against Selborne. They again produced an outstanding performance in the final, winning 6 - 1 again, to win the Port Rex tournament for the 4th time in 5 years.

Jason Murray U14 Water Polo Tournament:
The College Under 14A Water Polo team traveled to East London this weekend for the Jason Murray U14 Tournament, hosted by Selborne.
College began the tournament with convincing wins against Stirling (7 - 2), Selborne B (11 - 1) and Port Rex (13 - 0). They were unable to contain Grey PE on the second morning, but still qualified for the semi-finals against the hosts, Selborne.
The semi-final was a close and exciting encounter, with College eventually winning 4 - 3.
College played excellent water polo in the final, but the experience of the eventual tournament winners, Grey, proved too much for College, and they lost 1 - 5.
Finishing 2nd in their first tournament after just 4 weeks of water polo was a fine achievement for the College U14As and they are to be congratulated for representing College with such determination and pride. Well done to them!

Water Polo vs Selborne, Cake League:
The College U15A water polo team played a friendly match against Selborne on Friday afternoon, which they won 5 - 0.
In the water polo cake league on Saturday morning, the "Gagambas" beat "Team Firsts" in the final to walk off with the cake. In a playoff match, "Team Trollip" put up a good fight before losing to the water polo coaches.

Water Polo vs Grey and Selborne:
College and Kingswood hosted a number of matches against Grey and Selborne on Saturday 5 February, and despite a lengthy disruption due to lightning, all 12 College teams were involved in fixtures.
College teams played a total of 27 matches on the day, winning 12 and drawing 3.
Highlights included the 2nd team's 7 - 2 win over Selborne, the 4th team's 5 - 1 win over Grey, the U15A team's 6 - 1 win over Selborne, the U15B team's excellent brace of wins against Grey's U15B and U15C sides, and the U14A team's nail-biting 5 - 4 win over Selborne. However the most impressive result of the day was the U15A team's 5 - 4 win over the all-conquering Grey U15A team. The 1st Team achieved a 5 - 4 win over Grey's 2nd Team, and a 4 - 4 draw with Selborne.
Full results are posted on the noticeboard. Special thanks to Mr Harley Searle for looking after proceedings at the College Pool on Saturday, and to all those who helped make the day successful.
Well done to all the water polo players.

1st Team Water Polo Report - Grey Bloem Tournament 2011:
The St Andrew's College 1st Water Polo Team played in the seasoning opening Grey College Tournament over the past weekend in Bloemfontein, and ended up in a creditable 10th place out of 20 teams.
This young College team came up against two of the more experienced teams, Pretoria Boys and Reddam, in their pool matches, and they narrowly lost in both games. This resulted in them entering the play offs for a possible 9th position. Their first hurdle was a physical Glenwood side whom they comfortably outplayed. They could however not build on this momentum in their final game of the tournament and narrowly lost to Grey PE in a keenly contested match.
The style of play, potential shown and good manners displayed by the team were noted by a number of the coaches. In reflecting on the outcome of the weekend's matches, having lost three and won three, the 1st team was acutely aware that developing consistency will be key for further success this year.
Game results:
vs Pretoria Boys High School - lost 5 - 7
vs Port Rex THS - won 10 - 0
vs Invitational team - won 7 - 4
vs Reddam House - lost 2 - 4
vs Glenwood High School - won 8 - 4
vs Grey High School - lost 1 - 3

Water Polo vs Pearson, Woodridge, Grey PE, Kingswood and Graeme:
College and Kingswood hosted Pearson, Woodridge and Graeme for a set of water polo fixtures on Saturday. College teams played a total of 17 matches on the day, winning 8 and drawing 1. Highlights included the 2nd team's 7 - 3 win over Pearson, the 3rd team's 4 - 3 win over Woodridge 1st Team, the U15A team scoring at the death to record a nail-biting 6 - 5 win over Pearson, the U15B team achieving an equally exciting 6 - 5 win over Woodridge U15A, and the U14A team's fine performance in losing narrowly to Grey PE, last year's SA Schools U13 section winners. Full results are posted on the notice board.

Port Rex Knockout Tournament:
The College 1st and 2nd teams took part in the Port Rex Knockout Water Polo Tournament in East London on Friday and Saturday, 21 and 22 January.
The 2nd Team started with a good 7 - 6 win over Hudson Park 1st Team. They then played exceptionally well to draw 4 - 4 with Selborne 1st Team, and were only defeated in extra time 6 - 4. Their third match was a disappointing 9 - 2 defeat to Stirling 1st Team, but the finished the tournament well with an 8 - 5 win over Kingswood 2nd Team, to finish 7th overall.
The 1st Team's opening game with Kingswood 2nd Team was called off after 4 minutes due to lightning, with College ahead 4 - 0. Their second game was a disappointing 5 - 1 defeat to Pearson. After some soul-searching, the 1st Team bounced back with a fine 6 - 4 win over Selborne to claim 3rd place in the tournament

SA Schools Tournament 2010:
32 College boys represented Border at the SA Schools Water Polo Tournament in Durban during the December holidays.
The boys representing the U14A, U15A and U16A teams gained valuable experience against the top players in the country in their age groups. Despite their lack of practice together as a team beforehand, these Border teams performed creditably, picking up a number of impressive wins in the tournament.
The Border U19B team, which included 6 College boys, won the U19 B division and was unbeaten in the tournament. The U19A team of 13 players included 11 College representatives, and they eventually lost in the semi-finals of the tournament by a single goal to the host province, Kwazulu-Natal.
After the tournament, 4 College boys were selected for the South African U19 team: Peter Cornish, Choc Malan, Angus Macdonald and Lachlan Macdonald.  Two of them, Peter Cornish and Choc Malan, were in the South African side that took part in the Tri-Nations tournament in New Zealand against Australia and New Zealand. They recorded 3 wins against Australia and 1 win and 2 draws against New Zealand to remain unbeaten and win the Tri-Nations tournament.
The prominence of College players in SA Schools water polo was an indication of the memorable year that College Polo enjoyed in 2010, and a challenge that the water polo club will be keen to emulate in 2011.  G Creese

Water Polo Camp 2011:
60 boys, including 13 new boys, attended the water polo camp in the week before school started. We welcomed back our professional coach, Mr Jason Sileno, and a number of new, highly talented young coaches from Rhodes University.
The boys swam several kilometers every morning, completed a number of drills aimed at improving their skills every afternoon, and played a number practice matches in the evenings. This should stand them in good stead for a long and busy water polo season, which begins with a tournament for the 1st and 2nd Teams this weekend in East London.
Good luck to all the water polo players for a successful and enjoyable season.

Waterpolo News and Results 2010:

Grey Bloem U14 Tournament 2010:
The Under 14A Water Polo team traveled up to Bloemfontein two weeks ago for the Grey College U14 tournament, which featured 20 of the top sides in the country.
College started well with a narrow defeat against the eventual winners of the tournament, Clifton, and followed this with comprehensive victories against Jeppe and Parktown, but they slipped up against Northwood in their final pool game, losing by a goal to miss out on a quarter final place.
Although they subsequently lost their playoff games to Rondebosch and St Peters, they still managed a creditable 12th place finish out of 20 sides at this prestigious tournament.  Congratulations to our U14A water polo players. G Creese

Water Polo vs Grey, Pearson:
7 senior water polo teams and 2 junior teams travelled to Port Elizabeth on Saturday for a series of fixtures against Grey, Pearson, Woodridge, Kingswood and Graeme.
Although College only recorded 4 wins on the day, there was some good water polo played and some fine results. Special mention must be made of the U14A team, who performed bravely in defeat to Grey and recorded a fine win over Pearson, and the 5th team, who maintained their unbeaten record so far this season with wins over Grey 5ths and Grey 6ths.

Honours Citation for Peter Mark Cornish 5 October:
Peter Cornish started playing water polo at College in 2005, representing both the U14A and U15A sides whilst still part of the U13 age group. In 2007 he made the step up to the 1st Team, and in 2008 he cemented his position in the side, touring with the team to several major tournaments, and he took part in the overseas tour to Hungary and Croatia in 2009.
He was awarded Colours for Water Polo in 2009, and was re-awarded his Colours in 2010.
As he lived overseas, Peter was not available for provincial selection until 2008. In 2008, he was selected as the goalkeeper for the Border U16A team, and in 2009 and 2010 he was selected for the Border U19A team. He also represented the Border Mens' team at the South African Championships in Durban in April 2010, and was selected for the South African U20 squad of 30, from which a team will be selected to participate in the World Championships in Greece in 2011. In August 2010, Peter was selected as the goalkeeper for the South African U18 Water Polo team which will participate in a Tri-Nations series against Australia and New Zealand in New Zealand in December 2010.
At the prestigious KES Tournament in March, he was selected as part of the tournament side, an accolade which recognizes him unofficially as being amongst the top players in the country. He repeated this achievement at the equally prestigious SACS Tournament in September, where he was also named as the best goalkeeper at the tournament. He was also named Player of the Tournament at the St Andrew's Shield Tournament in March.
He has been a starting seven member of the most successful water polo team in the history of St Andrew's College, and has made a significant contribution to the 4 tournament victories the team has achieved this year, including the Vides Tournament, the St Andrew's Shield Tournament, and the SACS Tournament, one of the two premier tournaments in the country and the equivalent of an SA Schools Championships.
Peter's contributions to water polo at College have not been limited to the water. His leadership and influence within the squad have been immense and he has always willingly given of his time to pass on his expertise to younger goalkeepers in the school. Moreover, he has always represented the school with pride and has brought great credit to the school.
Peter's record speaks for itself and he has proven that he deserves to be considered amongst the top schoolboy water polo players in the country. He is a highly respected member of the 1st Team who inspires a lot of confidence in his teammates, and he has been instrumental in the growth of the sport at College and the emergence of the 1st Team as one of the top sides in the country. His performances for the 1st Team have been exceptional, and he is a most deserving recipient of an Honours award for Water Polo. Graham Creese

Honours Citation Matthew Nicholas (Choc) Malan 5 October:
Choc Malan only arrived at College in his Matric year, due to a variety of circumstances beyond his control. He was a member of all-conquering Grey PE U14 and U15 water polo sides in 2006 and 2007, and was a star player for the Reddam House 1st Team in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 he joined us at College, and quickly made his mark with some electrifying performances for the 1st Team. He was awarded his Colours for Water Polo in March 2010.
Choc was selected for the Eastern Province U14A team in 2006 and the Eastern Province U16A team in 2007. In 2008 he represented the Western Province U16A team, and in 2009 he represented the Western Province U19A team. He has been selected for the Border U19A side in 2010. He also represented the Border Mens' team at the South African Championships in Durban in April 2010, and was selected for the South African U20 squad of 30, from which a team will be selected to participate in the World Championships in Greece in 2011. In August 2010, Choc was selected for the South African U18 Water Polo team which will participate in a Tri-Nations series against Australia and New Zealand in New Zealand in December 2010.
At the prestigious KES Tournament in March, he was selected as part of the tournament side, an accolade which recognizes him unofficially as being amongst the top players in the country, and he repeated this achievement at the equally prestigious SACS Tournament in September. He was also named the best forward at the Vides Tournament in February, and a member of the Tournament 7 at the St Andrew's Shield Tournament in March.
Choc's influence on College Water Polo has been immense, and he brought an added dimension to the club. He has willingly shared the experience he has gained playing water polo elsewhere, and has willingly given of his time to help other water polo players at the school. He has represented the school with pride and has brought great credit to the school, and it is telling that he has become part of the team so quickly that it seems like he has always been at College.
His record speaks for itself and he has proven that he deserves to be considered amongst the top schoolboy water polo players in the country. He is a highly respected member of the 1st Team and he has been instrumental in the emergence of the 1st Team as one of the top sides in the country. His performances for the 1st Team have been consistently outstanding, and he is a most deserving recipient of an Honours award for Water Polo.

Clifton Tournament 2nd October 2010:
After the success of the 1st Team Water Polo at the SACS Tournament, a Stayers team was selected to take part in the Clifton Tournament in Durban this past weekend. For a young side with very little experience, this was a daunting task, especially given that most of the sides in the tournament were full strength sides, including matrics.
Facing four of the top sides in the country in their pool, the College team struggled initially, losing to Pretoria Boys, Parktown, Grey PE and Bishops. However in their playoff against St David's, they picked up their first win of the tournament, 7 - 2, and they built on this with a fine 4 - 3 win over Affies in the quarter-final of the Plate competition. In the Plate semi-final they could not maintain their momentum though, going down to a strong St Alban's side, but on the final morning of the competition they beat Hilton 3 - 2 to finish 11th out of the 17 sides in the tournament.
This was a promising start for the new 1st Team, and bodes well for a successful and competitive season ahead.
Thanks to Mr Miles and Mr Sileno for accompanying the team to Durban, and well done to the Stayers Water Polo Team. G Creese

The St Andrew's College 1st Team traveled to Cape Town this weekend (25 September) to take part in the annual SACS Water Polo Tournament, featuring 20 of the top schools' water polo sides in the country.
College got off to an excellent start on the first day of the tournament, beating Wynberg 8 - 4, and they followed this with an impressive 8 - 2 win in a tough physical encounter with Maritzburg College. Their third game was an entertaining 12 - 3 win over Michaelhouse, and then in the main game of the day in front of a large crowd, they beat the hosts SACS 5 - 3.
The second day started off with a 7 - 3 win over Westville, and College followed this with a fine performance to beat last year's finalists KES 8 - 5. After a comfortable 10 - 3 win over Grey Bloem, College put in another impressive performance in their final game of the day to beat the other unbeaten side in the pool, St Stithians, 6 - 3.
They wrapped up their pool games on the final morning with a 7 - 0 win over Paul Roos to finish top of their pool with a full house of 9 wins in 9 games. This set up a quarter final against the 4th placed team in the other pool, Rondebosch, and College put in a commanding performance to win the game 5 - 1.
In the semi-final against Bishops, College again controlled the game superbly to win 5 - 1, thereby reaching the final of the SACS Tournament for the first time.
The final against a very strong Pretoria Boy High team was a close and tense match, and College came from behind to hold a narrow 3 - 2 lead at the end of the first chukka. However in the second chukka, College showed great composure, as they had throughout the tournament, to close out the match 5 - 3 and win the SACS Tournament for the first time in their history.
Choc Malan, Peter Cornish, Nick Eastwood and Lachlan Macdonald were selected for the tournament side announced after the tournament, and Peter Cornish was named the best goalkeeper in the tournament - an achievement that recognizes them unofficially as amongst the top players in the country.
This was an outstanding performance in a tournament featuring the top schools in the country, and was particularly impressive given that they won every one of their 12 matches, scoring 86 goals in the process. It was also a fitting send off for this remarkable team, which has without doubt been the finest water polo side in the history of St Andrew's College. G Creese

The St Andrew’s College U15A side had a successful trip to the Ian Melliar tournament held at Wynberg Boys High School in Cape Town. They played 7 games won 4 and lost 3.
The standard of water polo at the tournament was really high and as such teams needed to play a structured and disciplined game if they hoped to be competitive. The St Andrew’s side were able to do this in all their games, but were not able to do so consistently for all 4 chukkas especially against Clifton and Grey we were in both of the games up until half time.
The teams  lost and ended up placing 2nd, 3rd and 5th and the U15As final position in the tournament was a very credible 7th place.

August 2010: Peter Cornish and Matthew Malan have been selected for the SA U18 Water Polo team to compete in a tri-nations tournament against Australia and New Zealand in New Zealand in December.

St Andrew’s Shield Tournament 2010:

The annual St Andrew’s Shield Water Polo Tournament took place at the St Andrew’s College on Saturday and Sunday. 17 teams took part this year, including two highly rated teams from outside the Eastern Cape – Clifton School from Durban, and St Peter’s College from Johannesburg.

Peter Cornish, player of the tournament

The tournament was split into the Shield competition for the top 8 sides, and the Plate competition for the other 9 sides.St Andrew’s College 1st Team won their opening pool game against Pearson 11 – 1, and then controlled their game against Clifton to record an impressive 4 – 0 win. Their final pool game against Selborne was played in front of a capacity crowd and the St Andrew’s 1st Team produced an outstanding performance to match the electric atmosphere as they ran away to a 15 – 4 victory. The Plate competition was closely contested, with Grey PE 2nds beating St Andrew’s 2nds 5 – 2 in the final, and Stirling finishing 3rd with an 8 – 4 win over Port Rex. In the quarter-finals of the Shield tournament, St Peter’s needed extra time to overcome Pearson 7 – 6 and set up a semi-final against St Andrew’s, while  Clifton beat Kingswood 6 – 3 to progress to a semi-final against the winners of the other pool, Grey High School. The semi-finals produced some top quality water polo, with St Andrew’s College defeating St Peter’s 8 – 6 and Grey beating Clifton 6 – 1 to set up an all Eastern Cape final. Selborne beat Alex Road 9 – 3 for 7th place, Pearson defeated Kingswood 10 – 4 for 5th place, and St Peter’s won the 3rd place playoff against Clifton 5 – 3. The final was played in front of a large crowd, and St Andrew’s College rose to the occasion, producing a vintage performance to beat the powerful Grey side 8 – 5 and win the St Andrew’s Shield for the first time in 7 years. St Andrew’s goal keeper Peter Cornish was deservedly awarded the Player of the Tournament trophy, while the Tournament Seven included Angus Macdonald and Matthew Malan from St Andrew’s, Neil Wessels and Gary Fensham from Grey, Devin Ramsden and Jean Michau from St Peter’s and Jason Slabbert from Pearson. This completed a highly successful water polo season for the St Andrew’s 1st Team, with 3 tournament victories and an exceptional record of 34 wins and a draw in 39 matches. They are the most successful team ever to represent St Andrew’s and have firmly entrenched themselves amongst the top water polo sides in the country.

Water Polo – Kingswood Under 15 Tournament 2010

The U15A Water Polo Team took part in the Kingswood U15 tournament on Saturday.

They won their first 4 pool games comfortably, against Stirling, Pearson, Graeme and Woodridge, but were held to a 4 – 4 draw in their final pool game against Selborne. This meant they finished 2nd in their pool behind Selborne on goal difference, and faced a difficult semi-final against the winners of the other group Grey PE.

The semi-final against Grey was a close and exciting match. With the scores tied at 4 – 4 with 5 seconds remaining, Grey were awarded a penalty shot, which they converted to win the match 5 – 4 and advance to the final, which they went on to win.

This meant College finished 3rd out of the 12 teams competing in the tournament.

Well done to the U15A team.

KES Tournament 2010:
The College 1st Team Water Polo traveled up to Johannesburg over Half Term for the King Edward VII Tournament - recognized unofficially as the national schools' tournament, as with all of the top schools in the country competing, the water polo is tougher and of a far higher standard than anything else in the country. Placed in what was clearly the most difficult pool in the tournament, with three other potential winners in Parktown, Clifton and Pretoria Boys, College knew that merely progressing in the tournament would be a challenge. In their first game against Pretoria Boys, College started slowly, but grew in confidence as the game progressed and won an excellent match 11 - 7. Their second game against Clifton was another tough and nail-biting encounter, and College again dug deep to win the match 8 - 6. College's final pool game against Parktown would determine the winners of the pool, who would qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The match was extremely tight, with the scores still level after 3 chukkas. However Parktown took advantage of some tired defending from College in the last 5 minutes to score 3 counter goals and win the match 9 - 6; they would go on to win the tournament. College then faced a playoff against Rondebosch to qualify for the quarter-finals. Again the match was very close, with the scores tied at the end of the third chukka. However College lifted their game in the final chukka to win the match 12 - 9 and set up a quarter-final with pre-tournament favourites St John's. College went into an early 2 - 0 lead against St John's, but St John's showed their experience in pulling back the deficit and building an 8 - 5 lead. College fought back to close within one goal at 10 - 9, but it was not enough as St John's scored on the counter in the final 30 seconds to win the match 11 - 9.  This meant that College finished the tournament tied in 5th position, and although they were disappointed not to progress further, this still represented an outstanding achievement by the College 1st Team, given the toughness of their draw and the extremely high standard of this tournament.  At the conclusion of the tournament, Peter Cornish and Nick Eastwood were selected for the prestigious KES Tournament Side, an achievement that recognizes them unofficially among the top players in the country. College was also awarded the Fair Play Trophy in recognition of their fine performances and their impeccable behaviour and sportsmanship, both in and out of the pool. G Creese

The College U14A side had a successful trip to the Jason Murray tournament this weekend. In their first tournament representing their school, the boys were able to play controlled and consistent polo over the course of two days. Their coach Patrick Vice and the 1st team coach Jason Sileno were very happy with the manner in which they were able to apply what they have learnt in this short 1st term in these matches.Against Selborne they were particularly clinical and had pretty much sealed the win by the end of the 1st half as well as a spot in the semi-finals.They had to work hard to break down the spirited Port Rex team and eventually scored some great goals from structured play.In the final Grey were just too quick on the counter attack and were able to get more numbers to the opposite side of the pool and in this way create better scoring chances for themselves. It was a really enjoyable tournament, with the boys showing good sportsmanship in the pool and good manners out of the pool. H. Searle (manager)

Pearson Water Polo Tournament:
The St Andrew's College 2nd Team represented the school at the Pearson Water Polo Tournament in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
After a comfortable 16 - 1 win over Graeme, the team played some excellent water polo in losing 7 - 2 to the Grey PE 1st Team. They then beat Kingswood 7 - 3 and Woodridge 5 - 4 before losing 6 - 3 to Pearson in their final game.
As the only 2nd team in the tournament, the College 2nd team can be proud of their efforts in coming 3rd overall. G Creese

Port Rex U16 Tournament 2010:
In the Port Rex U16 tournament held in East London over the weekend, the St Andrew's College U16A team produced some fine performances to win the tournament ahead of a strong Grey PE side. St Andrew's started on Friday with a 9 - 0 win over Queens, and followed this with a 10 - 0 win over Pearson, an 8 - 3 win over Selborne and a 12 - 1 win over Cambridge to qualify for the semi-finals on Saturday. In the semi-final against Kingswood, St Andrew's were always in control and won the match 6 - 3 to set up a final against Grey PE.The final was a thrilling encounter, with St Andrew's building a commanding 4 - 1 lead, only for Grey to fight back to 4 - 4 with a minute remaining. With extra time looming, St Andrew's scored as the final whistle sounded to win the match 5 - 4 and the Port Rex U16 Tournament for the 3rd time in 4 years. Along with the 1st Team's success in the Vides Tournament, this completed a highly successful weekend in East London for St Andrew's College water polo. G Creese

Vides Tournament 2010:
St Andrew's College achieved the best water polo result in their history this past weekend, producing an outstanding performance to win the Vides Water Polo tournament held over the weekend at the Joan Harrison pool in East London. This is the oldest and one of the most prestigious schools' water polo tournaments in the country, not to mention one of the most demanding with ten matches to play in just two days. St Andrew's started well on Friday with a 7 - 3 win over Pearson. They then found themselves 4 - 1 down to a strong Grey PE side, before rallying back in a thrilling match to draw 5 - 5. They followed this with convincing wins over Collegians (12 - 2) and Bridgehouse (14 - 0), and in the final game of the first day they played an excellent game of controlled water polo to overcome the highly rated Bishops side 6 - 3.St Andrew's opened the second day with an 11 - 1 victory over Port Rex and a 10 - 2 victory over St Charles, and needing a 9 goal margin of victory against Stirling to finish top of their pool, they displayed clinical finishing to win 13 - 0 and qualify directly for the semi-finals. St Andrew's faced Bishops again in the semi-finals after the Cape Town side beat hosts Selborne in the quarter-finals. College started well and built up a 4 - 1 lead by half time. They continued to control the game in the second half, running away to a convincing 9 - 4 victory and a place in the tournament final against Grey PE, who beat last year's winners Reddam in the other semi-final. The final was played in front of a large crowd and was very evenly matched with both sides producing some high quality water polo. St Andrew's controlled the match in the first two chukkas, and built up a deserved 3 - 0 lead by half time. However Grey came back strongly in the second half, scoring twice to trail 3 - 2 early in the final chukka. In a thrilling finale to the tournament, Grey were awarded two penalty shots late in the game, both of which were saved superbly by St Andrew's goalkeeper Peter Cornish, and St Andrew's held on under heavy pressure from Grey to win the match 3 - 2 and take home the Vides Trophy for the first time. By winning the Vides Tournament, St Andrew's achieved their best ever result in a major schools' water polo tournament, and will be looking to build on this exceptional performance at the KES Tournament in Johannesburg in two weeks time. In addition, Matthew Malan was awarded the prize for the best forward in the tournament, an accolade he earned with some fine performances in the tournament. G Creese

Grey College Tournament January 2010:
The St Andrew's College 1st Water Polo Team traveled up to Bloemfontein on Wednesday to take part in the Grey College Tournament, featuring some of the top schools' water polo sides in the country.
Their first game was against the pre-tournament favourites, Parktown, and in a closely contested encounter, St Andrew's lost 4 - 6. They bounced back to beat Stirling 13 - 2 in their second game on Friday morning, before beating a strong St Albans side 8-7 in another thrilling match. Then in front of a large crowd on Friday evening, St Andrew's produced a fine performance to beat the hosts, Grey College, 11 - 4.
On Saturday St Andrew's continued their good form, beating an Invitation side 10 - 1 and Selborne 8 - 5 to finish second in their pool and set up a quarter-final against Grey PE.
The quarter-final was a close and exciting match, which St Andrew's eventually won 5 - 4. In the semi-final against the winners of the 2009 tournament, Clifton, St Andrew's controlled the game from the outset and won 4 - 1, to set up a final on Sunday morning against Parktown.
The final was a predictably tight game and with the scores locked at 1 - 1 near the end of the first chukka, Parktown countered off a missed shot at goal from St Andrew's and scored to lead 2 - 1. On the stroke of half time Parktown were awarded a penalty which they converted to lead 3 - 1 at the break. This meant St Andrew's had to chase the game in the second chukka, and despite a spirited effort, they were forced to leave gaps in their defence which Parktown exploited, eventually winning 7 - 4.
College's performance in winning the silver medals was an excellent effort and matches their best ever performance in a major tournament at last year's Grey College Tournament. They represented their school with pride and will be looking to build on this outstanding performance in the Vides, St Andrew's Shield and KES tournaments that lie ahead. G Creese

Good Win for St Andrew's Water Polo in East London 22 January 2010:
The St Andrew's College 1st and 2nd teams took part in the Port Rex Knockout Water Polo Tournament in East London on Friday and Saturday, with the 1st Team defending the trophy they won in 2009.As one of only two 2nd teams in the tournament, the College 2nd team was faced with a tough opening fixture against Selborne's 1st team, and despite a strong showing, they lost the match 3 - 1. They bounced back with an 8 - 2 win over Hudson Park, before losing 8 - 4 to Kingswood's 1st Team. In their final match they beat Hudson Park again, this time 8 - 4, to finish the tournament in 7th place. The College 1st Team opened the tournament with a comprehensive 13 - 1 win over Hudson Park, which as top seeds put them directly into a semi-final against Selborne. College played some excellent water polo in the first chukka to take a 6 - 1 lead into the break, and despite some lax defending in the second chukka, they recorded a comfortable 10 - 5 victory over Selborne to set up a final clash with Grey High School. After their exciting pre-season game the previous week in Port Elizabeth which St Andrew's won 13 - 10, there was much anticipation from the large crowd ahead of the final. However St Andrew's took control of the game from the start, and led Grey 5 - 0 at half time. They continued to dominate the game after the break, eventually winning the match 8 - 1, and thereby retained the Breetzke Trophy for the Port Rex Knockout Tournament for the second consecutive year.Starting the season with a tournament victory was a good confidence boost for College ahead of the demanding Grey Bloem tournament this coming weekend and bodes well for a successful 2010 season. Stirling Stayers Tournament 2009:
The St Andrew’s College 1st and 2nd Water Polo teams took part in the Stirling Stayers’ Tournament in East London on Saturday. The knock-out format of the tournament meant that teams had to win all of their games to win the tournament. The College 2nd team faced a strong Pearson side in their opening game, and went down 3 – 6. However they fought back with a 16 – 1 win over Cambridge, and a 6 – 1 win against Hudson Park, to qualify for the 5th place playoff against Pearson again. This time the College 2nd Team played more to their potential and won an exciting match 5 – 4 to finish in 5th place out of 10 sides – a fine achievement as they were the only 2nd team in the tournament. The College 1st team received a first round bye as one of the top seeds in the tournament, and in their opening game they recorded an impressive 11 – 2 win over Pearson. In their semi-final against Selborne, St Andrew’s never really got into their stride and ended up winning narrowly 6 – 5, to set up a final against Grey High School. In a tight and exciting final, Mark Prior scored twice and Angus Macdonald scored the winning goal in the final moments as St Andrew’s overcame Grey 5 – 4 to win the Stirling Stayers Tournament for the second year running. This was a pleasing result and a promising start by the new 1st Team for the 2009/2010 season.

STERRENBERG WATERPOLO TOURNAMENT 2009:
The Sterrenberg Waterpolo Tournament was held in East London at the Joan Harrison Pool Complex on the 23rd and 24th September 2009.
As the St Andrew’s College U15’s had already attended a tournament in Cape Town the previous week, a ‘B’ side was chosen to go to East London. St Andrew’s would play against the A teams from the other schools, so it was used as a good learning meeting for the chosen boys. There were 18 teams competing and they were broken down into six sections of three teams each. St. Andrew’s College were in Section C along with Cambridge and Jeppe Boy’s High. Our first game was against Cambridge, which we won 11 to 2, the boys playing good controlled waterpolo. Our 2nd game was against Jeppe, and after holding the opposition for the first 2 chukkas to 5 goals, the 3rd saw another 5 goals, and the final score was 0 to 12. With the one win St Andrew’s College went forward into the West Pool Section, there were six teams in this section, and six teams in the East Pool Section. The remaining teams were out of the Sterrenberg Tournament and went into the Milton Gates Section. To go through to the finals three of the five matches had to be won in the pool games. Our first pool game was against the hosts Selborne and after leading the 1st chukka, conceded 3 goals in each of the next 3 chukkas without scoring again, and went down 1 to 9.  The second game was against a strong Kearsney side, and after being down 10 goals in the first 2 chukkas, pulled themselves together to finally go down 0 to 13.This meant that St Andrew’s were in a must win situation for the next three games if we were going to go further. The game against Paul Roos was a great improvement, the boys giving as much as they got, but eventually going down 4 to 9. St Andrew’s College’s final game of the cold and wet first day was against  Pearson from Port Elizabeth, who had beaten the same side by 10 goals a few days before. The boys were up to the challenge, both teams having 5 goals apiece after the 3rd chukka. Unfortunately we missed a 5metre penalty in the last chukka that would have won us the game, and we went down 5 to 7. We went away a dissappointed side, but the boys had tried their very best.On Thursday St Andrew’s College played the last game of their pool, against a very strong King Edward School side, and we were outplayed to go down by 17 goals to nil. This meant we would not go any further, and would play the 6th placed side in the East Pool, Stirling, from East London. After an incredibly tight and even game, the boys ended at 3 all, and we tied for 11th place in the tournament.I would like to congratulate the boys for never giving up, for their spirit in and out of the pool, and the exemplary behaviour displayed at all times. A big thank you must go to their coach, Andrew Duncan, who gave all the players a fair and equal chance to play, and was a great encourager. The boys can be proud of their achievement in an A section tournament, and all learnt much that they can carry forward with them.Hilton Haakonsen Team Manager.

The St Andrew’s College 1st Team traveled to Cape Town last week to take part in the annual SACS Water Polo Tournament, featuring 20 of the top schools’ water polo sides in the country.

Faced with a difficult draw, College got off to an excellent start, beating JAG WP Development 9 – 1, and then producing an exceptional performance to beat the highly rated Bishops side 7 – 1. They followed this up with a comprehensive 7 – 0 win over Northwood, but in their final game of the first day against the tournament favourites, St John’s, they were beaten 7 – 3.

Against Westville early on the second day, College could not convert several goal-scoring opportunities and lost 3 – 2, and they were further frustrated as they drew 2 – 2 with Maritzburg College and 4 – 4 with Rondebosch, and then lost a tough encounter with KES 3 – 1.

They bounced back with an excellent 10 – 2 win against Grey Bloem in the first game of the final day and, with Rondebosch holding on for a draw against Bishops, College finished in 4th place in their pool and qualified for the quarter finals on goal difference over Bishops.

In the quarter final against the top team in the other pool, St Stithians, College controlled the game superbly and pulled away in the second chukka to win 6 – 4.

This set up a semi-final against KES again, and this time College found themselves 4 – 0 down within the first 5 minutes as KES produced a series of unstoppable long range shots. Despite fighting hard in the second chukka, College couldn’t bridge the gap and lost 5 – 1.

In their final playoff against Pretoria Boys High, College again found themselves 4 – 0 down after 5 minutes and it looked like their tournament would end disappointingly. However a goal just before half time from Mark Prior gave them a glimmer of hope and in an extraordinary second chukka, two goals from Edward Torr and one each from Angus and Lachlan Macdonald gave College the most unlikely and exciting 5 – 4 victory.

This meant College finished the tournament in 3rd place, an outstanding performance in a tournament featuring the top schools in the country, and their best ever result in the SACS tournament by some margin. It was also a fitting send-off to the 3 matrics in the side, Edward Torr, Jamie Gotz, and Simon Pheasant, who were playing their final game for College against Pretoria after 5 years of dedication to College water polo.

Edward Torr scored 14 goals in the tournament and after the final he was selected as part of the prestigious Tournament Side, an achievement that recognizes him unofficially as one of the top players in the country.

Congratulations to the College 1st Water Polo Team on an outstanding performance at the SACS Tournament and for representing College with pride both in and out of the pool.

Water Polo Tour

After a short training camp in Johannesburg, a group of 27 College boys departed on 17 August on a 2 week water polo tour to Hungary and Croatia.

Water polo is among the main sports in these countries, much like rugby is in South Africa, and hence the level of water polo is far higher than it is here. The aim of the tour was to develop skills and expose the boys to a far higher level of water polo than they are used to, and the tour group was made up of a mixture of all age groups from U14 to U19.

The tour group flew in to Budapest in Hungary, and then traveled by tour bus through Hungary and Croatia, visiting Eger, Budapest and Balaton in Hungary, and Zagreb, Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia along the way.

They played training matches against a variety of local club sides of differing strengths, although in most cases the opposition was somewhat stronger than them! They were also exposed to different training methods and coaching tips from top Hungarian and Croatian coaches and attended a number of matches at the Junior World Championships in Sibenik, Croatia.

Amongst the many highlights of the tour were the water polo matches in the sea in Zadar, the thermal water polo pool in the town of Eger, exploring the city of Budapest, the tours of the old cities of Split and Dubrovnik, the amazing sights and beaches of the Dalmation Coast, and of course the beautiful Eastern European girls!

My thanks to everyone who made the water polo tour possible, and in particular to the boys on the tour, whose co-operation, positive attitude, and impeccable behaviour made the tour such an enjoyable experience for all and such a pleasure to be a part of.

Wynberg Under 15 Tournament 2009:

The College Under 15A Water Polo team traveled to Cape Town last week to take part in the Ian Melliar U15 Tournament, hosted by Wynberg Boys High School, featuring 20 of the top sides in the country.

College started the tournament on Thursday evening with a comfortable 7 – 1 win against St Albans, but on Friday morning they lost to St Stithians 4 – 7. They bounced back later in the day to beat Rondebosch 6 – 4 and then the hosts Wynberg 3 – 2 on Saturday morning to qualify for the quarter finals.

They started the quarter final against Grey PE poorly and despite a good fight back they lost the game 8 – 11.

In their first playoff game they beat St Stithians 8 – 5 after extra time, and they then beat St Peters 4 – 1 to finish the tournament in 5th place, an excellent result in a highly competitive tournament.

Stuart Stopforth scored 17 goals in the tournament and after the final he was selected as part of the prestigious Tournament Side – a remarkable achievement, especially considering he was playing a year above his age group.

Grahamstown Water Polo League
The Grahamstown Water Polo League wrapped up last week, and a big thank you to everyone who contributed to making it such a success. I think the leagues were well balanced and there were a number of close and exciting contests. The final results and league standings are attached.   The 1st  League was won by St Andrew's 1st who won all 5 of their games.   The 2nd League was a very close affair, with Rhodes Girls just pipping St Andrew's U15A and DSG 1st by a single point to take home 1st place.   The 3rd League was also a very close contest, with Kingswood U15A beating St Andrew's U15B 5 - 3 in the final match to finish unbeaten and secure 1st place.   The 4th League was won by St Andrew's U14A, who won all 5 of their matches.   The 5th League was won by St Andrew's U14B, who won all 4 of their matches.

Colours Awards and Thanks 10 March 2009:
This has been a highly successful water polo season for St Andrew's College, with 172 competitive matches played by 5 senior teams and 4 junior teams, and more than 65% of matches won.
The 1st Team achieved an exceptional 31 wins out of 35 matches, the best performance by a St Andrew's College 1st Team in recent memory, while the 2nd Team's 17 wins and a draw out of 28 games is all the more impressive when one considers that 23 of those games were against the 1st teams of other schools, and they were unbeaten against any other 2nd Team.
The U15A Team achieved 22 wins and 2 draws out of their 29 games, and the U14A Team won 13 of their 17 matches, showing that the future for St Andrew's College water polo is bright.
Thanks are due to a number of people who have made this water polo season such a success:

  • The Water Polo coaches - Jason Sileno, David Krige, Alexei Loubser, Andrew Beer, Tom Brukman, Andrew Duncan, Patrick Vice and Gareth Bleazard - for all their hard work.
  • Hilton Haakonsen, Bevan Hare and Kallie for keeping the pool in such good condition.
  • DSG for the use of their facilities.
  • All those who have come out to support the water polo teams at College and around the country.
  • All the water polo players who have represented College with such pride.

Well done and thank you to everyone involved in water polo this term. After an outstanding season for the 1st Team Water Polo, Colours for Water Polo have been awarded to the following boys:
Steven Cilliers
Peter Cornish
Liam Henderson
Nick Eastwood
Angus Macdonald
Lachlan Macdonald
Mark Prior
They all thoroughly deserve this achievement, joining Simon Pheasant, Jamie Gotz and Edward Torr whose colours were awarded previously. Congratulations to all of them. G Creese

Kingswood Under 15 Tournament 2009:
The St Andrew's College U15A and U15B Water Polo Teams took part in the Kingswood U15 tournament on Saturday.
As the only "B" team in the tournament, the U15B team played well to win 3 of their 6 pool games, against Alex Road U15A, Cambridge U15A and Kingswood U15A. They finished third in their pool, just missing out on the semi-finals and achieving joint 5th place overall.
After a shaky start in which they drew 3 - 3 with Pearson, the U15A team won their other 5 pool games comfortably, against Graeme, Kingswood Invitation, Port Rex, Stirling and Woodridge, to qualify for the semi-finals as group winners.
In the semi-finals against hosts Kingswood, College won 7 - 1 to set up a final against Grey PE. The final was a close and exciting match, with Grey eventually winning 5 - 4.
Well done to the U15A and U15B water polo players on finishing the season with such a fine performance. G Creese

KES Tournament 2009 March 2009:
The St Andrew's College 1st Team Water Polo traveled up to Johannesburg this weekend for the King Edward VII Tournament - recognized unofficially as the national schools' tournament, as with all of the top schools in the country competing, the water polo is tougher and of a far higher standard than anything else in the country.
In their first game against Parktown on Friday, St Andrew's showed good composure to win 12 - 8. Their second game against Rondebosch was played in front of a large crowd on Friday evening, and St Andrew's played some excellent water polo to win an exciting match 9 - 6.
In their final pool game on Saturday morning, St Andrew's took control early on against DHS and ran out 12 - 7 winners, thereby winning their pool and qualifying directly for the quarter-finals.
St Andrew's led for much of the way in their quarter-final against Pretoria Boys High, but towards the end of the match Pretoria upped their game, and with some tight calls going against them, St Andrew's were unfortunate to lose the match 9 - 10.
This meant that St Andrew's finished the tournament in 5th position, and although they were disappointed not to progress further, this still represented an outstanding achievement by the St Andrew's 1st Team, given the extremely high standard of this tournament.
St Andrew's College is now unofficially ranked in the top 5 schools in the country, having won 31 of their 35 games this season, and can rightly claim to be the top water polo side in the Eastern Cape, having won every encounter against Eastern Cape opposition this season. This is certainly an achievement they can be proud of! G Creese

St Andrew's Shield Tournament 2009:
The annual St Andrew's Shield Water Polo Tournament took place at on the Saturday and Sunday of Half Term. 16 teams took part this year, including for the first time two highly rated teams from outside the Eastern Cape - Clifton School from Durban, and St Peter's College from Johannesburg.
The College 1st Team comfortably won their pool with victories over Stirling (9 - 3), Pearson (8 - 3) and Alex Road (9 - 4), and although they lost to Clifton (1 - 14), the College 2nd Team won two of their three pool games, against Hudson Park (12 - 6) and Dale (17 - 3) to qualify for the quarter-finals as well.
The 2nd team played a superb game of water polo to push St Peter's all the way in the quarter-finals, eventually going down 4 - 5. They then comprehensively beat Selborne 2nds 15 - 2, and in the playoff for 5th place they lost to Selborne 1st team 1 - 7, finishing the tournament 6th overall.
The College 1st team completely dominated their quarter-final against Seborne 2nds, winning 24 - 4. However in the semi-final they did not play to their potential, surprisingly losing to St Peter's 4 - 6.
The 3rd place playoff between College and Grey was played in unusual circumstances, with the College supporters at the College pool seemingly outnumbered by Grey supporters. Nonetheless, College controlled the game from the outset and claimed 3rd place with a comfortable 5 - 2 victory.
In the final of the tournament, Clifton deservedly beat St Peter's 3 - 2 in an exciting match to win the St Andrew's Shield.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed to making the St Andrew's Shield tournament a success: The matrons, the student tutors, Mr Haakonsen and the grounds staff, Mr Henry and the printing staff, KKS, the Highlander staff, DSG for the use of their pool, Mr Henderson for providing scoreboards, all the College water polo coaches, Martin Chandler and Matt Arnot for running the table, and those who came to support the tournament. Well done to our 1st and 2nd team water polo players.G Creese

Vides Tournament 2009:
St Andrew’s College produced an outstanding performance at the Vides Water Polo tournament held over the weekend at the Joan Harrison pool in East London. This is the oldest and one of the most prestigious schools’ water polo tournaments in the country, not to mention one of the most demanding with nine matches to play in just two days. St Andrew’s started well on Friday with an 8 – 3 win over a strong Paul Roos side. They followed this with convincing wins over Port Rex (10-2), St Charles (14-1), Graeme (17-0) and Dale (16-0). In the final game of the first day they overcame the hosts Selborne 7-6 in an exciting game in front of a large home crowd. St Andrew’s completed their pool games on Saturday morning with an 8-1 victory over Pearson, to win their pool and qualify directly for the semi-finals. With Selborne beating Grey in the quarter-finals, St Andrew’s faced the hosts once again with a place in the final at stake. Selborne started strongly and led 2-1 at the break. However St Andrew’s took control of the game in the second chukka and ran out 5-2 winners, setting up a final against Reddam from Cape Town. The final was very evenly matched with both sides producing some high quality water polo. Reddam scored first and led 2-1 at half time. St Andrew’s pulled level soon after the break, but then fell behind again as Reddam scored twice. With time running out, captain Jamie Gotz scored a fine goal, but Reddam held on to win the final 4-3. By winning the silver medals, St Andrew’s achieved their best placing at the Vides tournament in many years, and will be looking to build on this performance at the St Andrew’s Shield and KES tournaments in the next two weeks. In addition, in their first appearance in the tournament, the St Andrew’s 2nd team achieved a creditable 9th place, winning games against the first teams of Hudson Park (6-2), Jeppe (5-4), Woodridge (6-0) and Port Rex (7-0), and the Selborne 2nd team (6-3). G Creese

Port Rex U15 Tournament 2009:
In the Port Rex U15 tournament held in East London over the weekend, the College U15A team produced some fine performances to finish third, behind Grey and Selborne.
College started with a nervous 4-3 win over Pearson, and followed this with another narrow 4-3 victory over Stirling. In a disappointing game they lost 2-1 to Selborne, whom they had beaten by 10 goals just two weeks earlier. However they bounced back with victories against Queens (5-0), Cambridge (11-1), Port Rex (10-0) and Kingswood (4-3), before finishing the tournament with an excellent performance in losing narrowly to tournament winners Grey, 2-3.This was a good performance from the College U15A team and bodes well for the rest of the season.Well done to the College U15A water polo players. G Creese

College U14B beat Alex Rd U14A 4 - 2.

Jason Murray U14 Water Polo Tournament 14 February:
The College Under 14A Water Polo team traveled to East London this weekend for the Jason Murray U14 Tournament, hosted by Selborne.
College began the tournament with convincing wins against Cambridge (11 - 0) and Pearson (4 - 1). However in their first game on Saturday morning they missed a number of opportunities in losing 1 - 3 to the hosts, Selborne. Needing a win in their final pool game against Port Rex, they put in a much better performance to win 8 - 0 and qualify for the semi-finals against Grey PE.
The experience of the eventual tournament winners, Grey, proved too much for College in the semi-final, losing 1 - 8, but in the 3rd place playoff against Stirling they played some excellent water polo to win 9 - 0.Finishing 3rd in their first tournament after just 4 weeks of water polo was a fine achievement for the College U14As and they are to be congratulated for representing College with such determination and pride. Well done to them! G Creese

Matches between St Andrew's, Kingswood, Graeme, Grey PE and Selborne 7 February 2009:
Grey PE and Selborne traveled to Grahamstown on Saturday for a full set of water polo fixtures against College, Kingswood and Graeme.
Some of the highlights of the day included a 6 - 3 win for the 3rd team against Selborne 3rds, a hard-fought 5 - 5 draw for the 4th team against Selborne 3rds, a 6 - 4 victory for the U15B team against Grey U15B, a fine 10 - 0 win for the U15A team against Selborne U15A, and an exciting 9 - 6 win for the U14A team against Selborne U14A.
The College 2nd team kept up their proud record of being unbeaten since 2007 against the 2nd teams of any other school, recording impressive wins against Selborne 2nd 11 - 5 and Grey 2nd 10 - 3. They also had a close game against the Selborne 1st team, eventually losing 4 - 6.
The first chukka between College and Selborne 1sts was evenly matched, with the scores tied at 4 - 4 at the break. In the second chukka however, College stepped up a gear to win the match comfortably 9 - 6, with Liam Henderson scoring 4 superb goals.
The final game of the day was between the 1st teams of College and Grey. College started the match in fine style and quickly built up a 4 - 1 lead. However Grey fought back with two excellent goals to leave the match poised at 4 - 3 at half time. In the second chukka, College took control of the game in front of a large home crowd and won the match 7 - 3, with some fine goals scored by the Macdonald twins.
Well done to our water polo players for some excellent results against two of the top water polo playing schools in the Eastern Cape! G Creese

Grey College Tournament 2009:
The College 1st Team Water Polo traveled up to Bloemfontein on Wednesday to take part in the Grey Bloem Tournament, featuring some of the top schools' water polo sides in the country.
Having had limited match practice in the lead up to the tournament, it wasn't surprising that College began their opening match on Thursday afternoon against Glenwood a little slowly. However they started to find their rhythm in the second chukka and eventually won the match 8 - 3. They then beat a physical Affies side 9 - 2 in their second game on Friday morning, setting up a crucial match against Pretoria Boys to determine the winners of the pool.
The game against Pretoria was very close with both sides playing some excellent water polo. The scores were tied at 2 - 2 after the first chukka, and were still tied at 4 - 4 with 2 minutes to go. College then lifted their game and scored two decisive goals in a minute, and despite a late fight back from Pretoria, they held on to record a superb 6 - 5 victory.
As winners of their pool, College was drawn to play the runners-up in one of the other pools, Parktown, in the quarter-finals. Another slow start meant College had to chase the game from 2 - 0 down, but they made up the deficit by the end of the first chukka. The second chukka was very tight and it ended tied at 4 - 4, meaning two short additional chukkas of extra time would be played. The game swung back and forth with each side answering a goal conceded with a goal of their own, and with the large crowd on the edge of their seats, it was no surprise when the game was still tied at 8 - 8 after extra time, sending the match into a penalty shootout. After both sides scored their first penalties, the College goalkeeper, Peter Cornish, produced a string of three consecutive superb saves and the College penalty takers held their nerve to slot their shots at goal, winning the match 3 - 1 on penalties.
In the semi-finals College faced the pre-tournament favourites, St Stithians. Once again College found themselves behind early on, and they trailed 2 - 1 after the first chukka. However their tactic of dropping on the St Stithians centre forward began to pay off and they came back into the match with a fine second chukka in which the College centre forward, Edward Torr, scored a hat trick of top quality goals. With the match tied at 5 - 5 at the final whistle, College once again faced extra time. This time though College took control of the game and held on to win 8 - 6, setting up a final against Clifton.
The final was a predictably tight game which could have gone either way. College found themselves a goal down at half time, but managed to pull level early in the second chukka through an excellent goal from Lachlan Macdonald. However the moment that turned the match came when College missed a shot on goal and Clifton counter-attacked, scoring at the other end to lead 2 - 1 with just under 2 minutes remaining. With College pressing for a late equalizer, Clifton exploited the gaps left in defence and scored the decisive third goal to win the match and the tournament.
College's performance in winning the silver medals was their best in a major tournament for a number of years, and as the only side from the Eastern Cape to make it into the knockout rounds, they represented both their school and the region with pride. They showed great guts and determination in winning a number of difficult and close matches leading up to the final, and they will be looking to build on this outstanding performance in the Vides, St Andrew's Shield and KES tournaments that lie ahead. Well done to our 1st Team. G Creese

Border Schools Water Polo Tournament 23 January 2009:
The College 1st and 2nd teams took part in the Border Schools’ Knock-Out Water Polo Tournament in East London on Friday, hosted by Port Rex. The knock-out format of the tournament meant that teams had to win all of their games to win the tournament, which made it a good early season challenge as for most teams these were the first competitive matches of the year.
As the only 2nd team in the tournament, the College 2nd team was faced with a tough opening fixture against Selborne’s 1st team. Despite holding their own for much of the opening chukka, their lack of match practice showed and they lost the game 1 – 6. However in their next game against a strong Stirling 1st team, they played with more fluency and recorded an impressive 7 – 3 win. This put them into a playoff for 5th place against the 1st team of local rivals Kingswood. They got into their stride straight away and played some excellent water polo to win the match 10 – 1 and secure 5th place in the tournament.
The 1st team opened the tournament with a slightly rusty display in beating Stirling 6 – 1, and in their next game against Selborne they started poorly, conceding 2 goals in the opening minute. However they showed good composure to fight back and take a 3 – 2 lead at half time. In the second chukka College stretched their lead to 6 – 3, and despite some lax defending late on they won the match 6 – 5. In the final of the tournament College faced the hosts Port Rex, who had recorded comfortable wins in their opening two matches against Dale and Hudson Park. College took control from the start and ran out comfortable 9 – 2 winners, securing the Border Schools Knockout trophy for 2009.
Starting the season with a tournament victory was a good confidence boost for College ahead of the demanding Grey Bloem tournament this coming weekend and bodes well for a successful 2009 season. Well done to both the 1st and 2nd water polo teams.

Grey Bloem U14 Tournament 2009:
The St Andrew's College U14A Water Polo team traveled up to Bloemfontein last week for the Grey College U14 tournament, which featured 20 of the top sides in the country.  College began the tournament with a good 9 - 2 win against DHS on Thursday evening, and continued to perform well the following day, winning 9 - 3 against Jeppe and 14 - 1 against Parktown. They wrapped up first place in their pool with a 10 - 2 win against Northwood on Saturday morning to set up a quarter-final against Rondebosch. In their quarter-final against a Rondebosch side which included six Western Province players, College played some excellent water polo, but eventually went down in a tight contest 7 - 5.In their first playoff game, College bounced back to beat Westville 7 - 5, and in their final match they lost a close encounter against St Stithians 4 - 3 to finish the tournament in 6th place out of 20 teams. This was the best ever finish by a College team at this tournament, and a fine achievement by the College U14A side. The tournament provided invaluable experience for the boys against top quality opposition, which will stand them in good stead for the years to come.G Creese

Edward Torr receives honours for Water Polo November 2009:
Edward Torr started playing water polo at St Andrew's College in 2005, representing both the U14A and U15A sides. In the same year, whilst still in Grade 8, he made the step up to the 1st Team, and in 2006 he cemented his position in the side, touring with the team to several major tournaments and taking part in the overseas tour to Hungary and Holland.
As captain of the U15A team in 2006, Edward led the team to their first tournament victory in a number of years, and in 2007 he was awarded Colours for Water Polo. He was appointed vice-captain of Water Polo at the beginning of his Grade 11 year in 2008, and was re-awarded his Colours later that year. The 2009 St Andrew's College 1st Team has been the most successful in the school's history and as joint captain of Water Polo in 2009, Edward has played a large part in the side's success.
Edward has played provincial water polo every year of his high school career. He was selected for the Border U15A side in 2005, and at the end of that year he was named in the South African U15 side chosen at the SA Schools tournament. He was selected for the Border U16A side in 2006, and has been selected for the Border U19A side for three consecutive years from 2007 to 2009. It is remarkable that 2009 will be the first time he is playing provincial water polo in his own age group rather than the age group above.
Edward was invited to attend training sessions with the South African U19 side earlier this year, and at the prestigious SACS Tournament in September he was selected as part of the tournament side, an accolade which recognizes him unofficially as being amongst the top players in the country.Edward's contributions to water polo at St Andrew's College have not been limited to the water. His leadership and influence within the squad have been immense and he has always willingly given of his time to pass on his expertise to younger centre-forwards in the school. As captain of a 27-strong squad on the overseas tour to Hungary and Croatia in August 2009, his calm, considered and positive leadership was crucial to the success of the tour. Although he is a top class centre-forward, he has regularly played out of position in the 1st Team in recent seasons, willingly taking on less glamorous roles for the benefit of the team.
Edward's record speaks for itself and he has proven that he deserves to be considered amongst the top schoolboy water polo players in the country. He is a highly respected member of the 1st Team who inspires a lot of confidence in his teammates, and he has been instrumental in the growth of the sport at College and the emergence of the 1st Team as one of the top sides in the country.

Pearson U15 Tournament 2011:
The St Andrew's College U15A and U15B water polo teams took part in an U15 water polo tournament in Port Elizabeth on Friday and Saturday, hosted by Pearson High School.
The U15B team was one of only two B teams in the draw, and they fought hard to eventually finish in 9th place out of the 12 sides participating. In doing so, the recorded wins against Priory U15A and Alexander Road U15A, and drew 5 - 5 with Kingswood U15A.
The College U15A team started strongly on Friday, winning 16 - 0 against Kingswood, 12 - 1 against the College U15B side and 19 - 0 against Priory. On the second day, they found the going a little tougher, losing their first game of the day 9 - 4 to the eventual winners of the tournament, Grey U15A. However they bounced back with a 14 - 0 win over Woodridge which qualified them for the quarter-finals.
The quarter-final against an outstanding Grey U14A side was closely contested, but the Grey boys' speed on the counter proved decisive and they won the game 8 - 5. In an exhilarating playoff for 3rd place the College U15A side defeated the hosts, Pearson, 6 - 4 to claim the bronze medals. Afterwards, the College vice-captain, Matt Andrews, was named the best defender at the tournament.
This marked the end of the season for the U15 teams, who move into the senior ranks for next season. The Pearson tournament marked an entertaining conclusion to what has been a fine season for the U15A team, with the highlights being the tournament victory at Port Rex in February, and runners-up finishes in the Kingswood Tournament in March and the prestigious Wynberg Tournament in September.
