2012 results and news:
The Knowling Shield competition came to an interesting conclusion recently when Graeme College and Kingswood played against each other. All three sides had won one match and lost one, and with the same game scores, which meant that for the first time in several years the Shield was shared between all three schools. Although the College boys may be unhappy that they didnt win it, I am pleased as we needed to play very well against Kingswood to have a chance for a draw and the final result ended up being a fair reflection of the strength of all three sides.
Our top 20 boys also played a friendly doubles match against Graeme on Monday, with the top 10 winning by 3 matches to 2 and the 2nd 10 losing most of the matches. It gave great match practice to some of our social and non team players and all the boys played with a good attitude and enjoying the competition.
Well done to Kingswood College, Graeme College and all the College tennis players!
In the final match for the summer season, the 1st, 2nds and u15a teams played against a traditionally strong Grey side on Friday. The seniors came up against some tough provincial players at the top of the Grey side as well as great depth all the way down into the 2nd team. Several matches were closely contested but eventually Grey won convincingly.
But, what is undoubtedly the highlight of the season, and in fact, one of the highlights in College tennis for the past 5 years, was the u15a’s beating the Grey junior team by 8 matches to 4. College has not beaten Grey in many years, and in doing so the u15a side completed their unbeaten season in splendid fashion. With comfortable wins over Selborne, Queens, Kingswood, Graeme and Grey, they have shown that they will be a force to be reckoned with for the next two or three years and need to be commended for a job well done. Well done to Tom Lane, Murray Long, Anthony Dakin, Frank Norval, Adam Godlonton, Jayden Pienaar, Gordon Everard, Daniel Scholtz and all the other tennis players and to Grey!
On Friday the 1st Team and u15a’s played against Kingswood:
The 1sts compete for the Knowling Shield and the u15s play the same format but their result doesn’t not count towards the Shield. For the 1st Team, Fletcher Grafton played a very confident match and won in straight sets. Some great doubles matches helped College to eventually win by 3 matches to 2, but seeing as Graeme and Kingswood have not played each other, the winner of the Knowling Shield is still to be decided.
The u15a’s have continued their amazing season by beating Kingswood without dropping a set in the 5 matches played. This team has one match left for the summer season on Friday against Grey. Please come and support them as they are playing at DSG.
On Sunday the 1st team also played in the Settlers Cup, but unfortunately play had to be cancelled due to rain after the 1st round of singles. College was leading by 5 matches to 3 over Union High School. It was a pity because it promised to be a good days play. Well done to all the tennis players!
St Andrew's College played against Kingswood for the Knowling Shield on Friday.
This fixture sees the top two players competing in singles and the rest of the eight man squad playing doubles. All matches are the best of three full sets. Playing at number one for S. Andrew's, Fletcher Grafton had a straight set victory over Bryden Carse, while George Chemaly from Kingswood beat Michael Patterson in straight sets. That tied matters and it came down to the doubles matches to decide the tie, with St Andrew's eventually winning by 3 matches to 2. St. Andrew's lost to Graeme College 2-3 two weeks ago and Kingswood still has to play Graeme College to decide which school will take home the Shield.

Assembly 29 February:
The top 10 tennis players from College and DSG took on a very strong team from Pearson High School on Monday. They played singles, doubles and mixed doubles pro-set matches and despite the fact that Pearson has provincial players at the top of their line up, College and DSG had enough depth to win this fixture by the closest of margins, with a final match score of 20 – 19. It was a great day and although Pearson dominated at the top, our middle and low order players made up for it and were instrumental in this victory.
Assembly 22 February:
It was a very busy tennis weekend, starting with the 1st team and u15a's playing against Graeme College on Friday in the Knowling Shield. The seniors again found the going tough, losing narrowly by 2 matches to 3 but the u15s proved too strong and showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in the next few years, winning their match without dropping a set. They have now won 3 matches in a row, and they look set for a brilliant season.
Frank Norval, Kimon Aylett and Roland Palme also competed in a Mini Series event in East London over the weekend, all gaining valuable experience.
The Albany team was finalized with some play-off matches on Sunday and we congratulate Luke Boshoff, Camran Macfarlane, Kimon Aylett, Tom Lane, Brendon Owen, Angus Cook, Daniel Rose and Bruce Phillips for their inclusion in the side. The team played against a traditionally strong Midlands team on Tuesday and, although the u18s and u16s lost overall, several matches were closely contested. Lane had a great win over a ranked player Boshoff was unlucky to lose a 7-6, 6-7, 10-12 match that lasted well over 2 hours. Cook, Rose and Phillips are to be commended as they were unbeaten in singles and formed part of the only boys team to beat their Midlands counterparts.
Well done to all the College tennis players and their respective opponents!
Assembly Report 15 February:
The 1st and 2nd teams travelled to Queenstown on Friday to play against Queens, but unfortunately after only 20 minutes of play the match had to be called off due to heavy rain. College had won one match already at that stage.
The u15 a and b side played at Rhodes and they again proved far too strong for their Queens counterparts. Both teams won 9-0. Well done to them all!
Other tennis news is that Lourens Steytler has been appointed as Captain of the 1st Team and Luke Boshoff Vice Captain.
 and Luke Boshoff (Vice-Captain).jpg)
Assembly Report 8 February:
The tennis teams have been very active since the start of term. The first fixture was against Selborne and our 1st team found the going quite tough and losing1-8. Probably because most of them hadn't touched a racquet over the holidays! Seconds lost narrowly 4-5. Our u15 and b sides dominated against a much weaker Selborne side, only conceding a couple of matches along the way.
The Albany Championships also took place over the last two weekends, but, as was the case for most sports, the final weekend was cancelled due to the weather. Angus Cook, Camran Macfarlane, Kimon Aylett, Brendon Owen and Tom Lane were all due to play in the semi finals when the event was cancelled. The teams will be decided at a conveners meeting tonight and will be announced at next weeks assembly. Well done to all the tennis players!
2011 results and news:
The tennis captain for 2011 is Michael Rushmere and the vice captain is Richard Rubidge.
Tennis Champs:
The School Championship finals were completed on Friday. Every match was fiercely contested and all the players are to be congratulated for their efforts. There is no u16 Champion this year as there weren't enough players to do a draw. The final results were as follows:
The Barry Hobson Cup for the Open Champion: Fletcher Grafton
Open Finalist: Luke Boshoff
The GR Shimmin Bowl for the U15 Champion: Kimon Aylett
U15 Finalist: Keiran Witthuhn
The Hobson Trophy for the U14 Champion: Thomas Lane
U14 Finalist: Anthony Dakin

Assembly report 26 October:
The College and DSG 1st teams combined for their traditional Stayers matches against Kingswood and Graeme College/Victoria Girls High over the past two weeks. The match against KC was intense resulting in a tie in games after the first round, but our boys and girls proved too strong in the second round and won that match by 93 games to 83. Unfortunately the VG team has lost many of their players of the past couple of years, weakening their team significantly, and our team won that match convincingly by 114 games to 62.
The Junior boys and girls also played against KC and GC/VG and won those matches by 6-2 and 7-1 respectively.
All that's left for the 2011 tennis season are the postponed Open, u15 and u14 School Championship finals which will take place on Friday. Luke Boshoff and Fletcher Grafton, Kimon Aylett and Keiran Witthuhn and Anthony Dakin and Tom Lane are competing for the respective trophies.
I would like to thank all the players for their hard work over the course of the year, and on behalf of all the tennis players we would like to thank the Transport Department, KKS, the College and DSG ground staff, the Admin Department and the small but loyal number of supporters who attend our home matches.
5 October - Recent Tennis results:
The 1st team joined forces with DSG and travelled to Hilton to play in the Hilton/St Annes Doubles Invitational. The team had some very tough matches against St. Stithians/ Somerset College and and Durban High School but showed great fighting spirit in all matches. Grafton/Boshoff played some of their best tennis ever in the boy's doubles section and Luke Boshoff and Amy Preston had great results in the mixed doubles. Overall the boys came 6th, dropping 1 spot from last year and they came 5th in the mixed doubles section, also dropping 1 spot. The behaviour of the team on and off the court made them easy to manage and a pleasure to be around. Well done!
The SAC/Prep team also finished the recent Warwick bailey Cup competition slightly disappointingly after losing to Graeme by 9 games and losing to Kingswood by just 1 game, therefore accumulating enough total points to come second. Well done to the Graeme team for winning the Cup and well done to the tennis team for not giving up and claiming second place!

House Tennis results:
The inter house tennis competition took place at the end of last term and unfortunately the final seniors placing from 3-6 could not be determined due to bad weather.
The results were as follows:
Seniors:
2nd Merriman
1st Armstrong
Juniors:
6th Graham
5th Mullins
4th Merriman
3rd Armstrong
2nd Upper
1st Espin

Tennis results 21 September:
The Top 12 Open players recently had a warm up match against a very strong touring team from Hilton College. Although several sets were closely contested the boys did not manage to win any matches but this fixture kicked off College's preparation for the Hilton/St Anne's festival taking place this weekend.
The Warwick Bailey Cup was also contested over the past two Fridays. The team is made up of the top two players in u10, u12, u14, u16 and u18 and every pair plays the best of 15 games. The total number of games won decides the match. College/Prep lost to Graeme College 42 games to 33 and to Kingswood by 38 games to 37 with our senior teams giving a lack lustre performance. These matches reinforced to the boys the importance of playing with focus and determination from the very first point in the match. Again, all good preparation for the upcoming tour.
Assembly notice 22 June:
The 3rd team played a friendly match against Graeme College on Monday and for some of the boys it was their first inter schools match for College. They all did well and managed to win by 2 matches to 1.
The annual Family Tennis Round Robin was held on Sunday after KDay. This is always a very enjoyable event and families get to compete against other families in a fun atmosphere. 8 College teams, 6 Prep and 4 Junior Prep teams participated and apart from finding it difficult to deal with the strong winds, everyone managed to play some good tennis. Due to time constraints the first place in the senior division was shared between Mike and Adam Godlonton and Ken and Duncan Ralston. Well done to all the tennis players!
Assembly notce 15 June:
The senior and junior teams recently played friendly matches against Graeme College in attempt to have occasional match play through the winter. The seniors lost by 4 matches to 2 and the juniors won by 4 matches to 0.
In addition to this, the first national ranking event was held in Grahamstown and 85 players from all over the Eastern Cape and as far as Plettenberg Bay and Bloemfontein came to play in the event. Frank Norval, Kimon Aylett, Keiran Witthuhn and Adam Godlonton took part and they were able to learn a lot from their matches. Many of the participants only play tennis and the overall level of play was of high a standard. In order for players to be eligible for provincial teams their best 6 tournament results annually are considered forcing players to commit to regular tournaments. Well done to all the tennis players!
Assembly notice 30 March:
The top 10 tennis boys played their last match of the summer season against Pearson last Friday. Our team included several Grade 9s again and they did extremely well. Most singles matches were won in easy straight sets with only one or two doubles matches being closer contests. The final score was 12-3 to College and the boys displayed great sportsmanship and skill.
Assembly notice 23 March:
A young 1st team went to Graaff Reinet over the weekend to compete in the Settlers Cup Quadrangular with Graeme, Kingswood and Union High. All matches will played at a high level and the competition was fierce. With three Grade 9s in the team our boys managed to beat Graeme and lose narrowly to Kingswood and to Union High, placing them third. Some individual results that stood out were Camran Macfarlane who was unbeaten at no 6, Charles Bowren who beat a strong Union High no 1 who had been unbeaten in this event in the last two years and Charles Bowren and Luke Boshoff recording a memorable win over the Kingswood nr 1 doubles pair, playing some of the best doubles of the College tennis season so far.
Assembly notice 16 March: The first team joined forces with DSG and played in Selborne/Clarendon festival last weekend.
Due to a smaller tournament they faced very difficult competition. The team had tough losses against Selborne/Clarendon and Grey/Collegiate, and also narrowly lost to Noordkaap High school. They beat Woodridge to place them 4th out of the 5 teams who took part. Many good lessons were learned and their behaviour on and off the court was brilliant.
The College 1st team also finished their Knowling Shield campaign on Monday. After a disappointing 1-4 loss to Kingswood last week had the boys were on the ropes. They needed to beat Graeme 5-0 to have a shot at winning the Shield, but after some great tennis the Graeme team came from behind and beat College 3-2. That placed Kingswood and Graeme tied for 1st and College 3rd. Again, some great lessons were learned which will hopefully be useful in the years to come.
The u15a also played Kingswood and Graeme and beat both teams convincingly.
Well done to all the tennis players!
The 1st and 2nd team travelled to Port Elizabeth for their fixture against Grey.
Our seniors have struggled against Grey for the past four years and this year was no different. Only Brendan Owen, who filled in for the second team due to several injuries, managed to win his singles match. 6 matches were lost in tie breakers or after a lead was surrendered, so our boys learnt some valuable lessons during this fixture. It was unfortunate that the junior fixture was cancelled due to rain here in town, and we hope to make up that match soon as our current junior team is quite strong
The 1st and 2nd teams travelled to Queens on Friday 11 February to attempt to revenge their 2010 loss to Queens.
The going was much easier this year and the 1sts managed to win 7-2 and the 2nds 8-1. Queens sent their juniors to us and it is evident from this years results that tennis there is becoming weak quite rapidly. Our u15a's won 7-2 and the u15b's won 9-0. Even though most matches were easy for our boys, they kept a great attitude and showed good sportsmanship.
The following boys are also playing for Albany against Midlands at various venues across town tomorrow:
U14s: Murray Long, Frank Norval, James Lake, Adam Godlonton
U16s: Charles Bowren, Camran Macfarlane
U18s: Rhain Staubo, Fletcher Grafton
The Albany Junior Tennis Championships were completed last weekend. 265 players from all over the district competed and College had pleasing results across the board, but especially in the u14 age group. Rhain Staubo, Camran Mcfarlane, Frank Norval, James Lake and Adam Godlonton all made it to the semi finals and Murray Long lost in the finals. Frank and Adam also lost in the doubles final.
The following boys were all selected to play for Albany next week:
u18 Rhain Staubo, Fletcher Grafton u16 Charles Bowren, Camran Mcfarlane
u14 Murray Long, Frank Norval, James Lake, Adam Godlonton
Assembly notice 26 January:
Last Friday the 1st, 2nds, u15a and u15bs played against Selborne. The seniors played at Rhodes and the 1st team had to contend with several provincial players in the Selborne side. Unfortunately College was beaten convincingly and did not manage to win any of their matches, although some came close. The 2nds did much better and managed to win their match 5-4 even after being tied 3-3 after the singles. The juniors travelled to East London for the fixture and played in challenging conditions with gusty winds and occasional drizzle. They did extremely well with the a's winning by 6 matches to 3 and the b's by 9-0. This is extremely exciting for future matches as we havent beaten Selborne in several years. 25 boys from Grade 8-12 are competing in the Albany Championships this coming weekend, and we are again looking forward to great representation in the Albany squad.
2010 results and news:

2010 1st Team Captain:
Dane van der Westhuyzen
2010 1st Team Vice-Captain:
Justin Croxton
Assembly notice 2 November:
The College Stayers team combined with the DSG team to play mixed doubles against Kingswood and Graeme College/VG respectively over the past two Fridays. Against Kingswood the match count was tied at 8-8, but after a game count Kingswood won by a mere 6 games. Against Graeme and VG the going was a bit easier and SAC/DSG won by 10 matches to 6.
The u15s played Kingswood and lost by 5 matches to 3 and won 8-0 against Graeme/VG.
The College School tennis championships were finally completed and the final results were as follows:
Open runner up: Rhain Staubo
Champion: Dane van der Westhuyzen
U16 runner up: Fletcher Grafton
Champion: Charles Bowren
U15 runner up: Charl Pellissier
Champion: Charles Bowren
U14 runner up: Keiran Witthuhn
Champion: Joey Slack
Congratulations to the tennis team and to the various School Champions!
Assembly Report 19 October:
It has been a very busy month for the 1 st tennis team, and here are their results:
The battle for the Warwick Bailey Cup was contested over the past couple of weeks, and in this annual competition, SA Prep and SAC combine to form a team consisting of the top 2 u10 to u18 players. College lost to Graeme College by 50 games to 25, but beat Kingswood 38 games to 37, placing College second and giving Graeme College the Cup for 2010.
The tour to KZN for the Hilton/St Anne's Doubles Festival was very successful. The College boys and their DSG partners improved their mixed doubles position from last year, ending 4th,and the boys had good wins against Michael House and Uplands College placing them 5th overall. However, their matches against Hilton and St. Albans were closely contested and both fixtures could have gone either way. Dane van der Westhuyzen and Rhain Staubo are to be commended for winning three of their four matches and especially for their win against the Hilton number one team, who ended up second at the event. The boys were well behaved on and off the court, and represented College well.
The annual Settlers Cup Quadrangular between College, Graeme, Kingswood and Union High took place last Sunday. Union High again put in a strong performance beating all three of the Grahamstown schools. The final result, was Union High 1 st, College 2nd, Kingswood 3rd and Graeme College 4th.
Amidst all of these inter schools competitions, the School Tennis Championships have also been going on. The final of the Open section was played in difficult conditions during Balloon Week, and Dane van der Westhuyzen outplayed Rhain Staubo for the title. The finals of the u14-u16 events will be played during the next two weeks.
Congratulations to all the College tennis players
The 1st team and u15a's played against Marlow at DSG on Friday 23 July. The 1sts dominated and won all but one match, with several sets won either 6-0 or 6-1. Last year Marlow beat us 9-6, so our boys did very well to turn in an 8-1 victory this year. In the u15s the going was a little tougher and our boys lost all three the doubles matches, which meant they would have to win 5 of the 6 singles to pull off the win. There were some close matches, but eventually they managed to do just that, and eventually College won by 5 matches to 4. Charlie Bowren is to be commended on a fine win over an EP u14 player. Well done to all the tennis players!
8 May:
Four of the College First team players, along with two boys from Graeme College, attended the Merrifield tennis festival in East London over the weekend. The team played against Selborne, Merrifield and a Border Invitation team, and our boys are showing a marked improvement in their competition against tough opponents like Selborne. Even though they lost, the matches were more competitive than the last time they competed. They team lost narrowly to Merrifield, by 5 matches to 4, and beat the Border Invitation team convincingly, placing them 3rd overall. Well done to Rhain Staubo, Michael Rushmere, Luke Boshoff, Fletcher Grafton and the two boys from Graeme College on a successful trip!
13 April 2010 Team Jerseys are awarded to:
Justin Croxton
Michael Rushmere
Rhain Staubo
Fletcher Grafton
Luke Boshoff
13 April 2010 Colours for tennis are awarded to:
James Price
Dane van der Westhuyzen
Stephen Glyn

The College 1st team along with the DSG 1st team competed in the Selborne/Clarendon mixed doubles festival over the weekend. 6 teams took part and a round robin format meant we competed against all the other teams. Our matches against Selborne/Clarendon and Grey/Collegiate were extremely tough, with most of their players being either highly ranked provincial or national players. One girl from Clarendon is ranked in the top 35 u18s in the world, so some of our players even got some very valuable international exposure! The matches against Marlow, Merrifield and Aliwal North were more competitve and College/DSG were able to win all three, for a final placing of 3rd at the festival. All in all it was a good experience and the players' behaviour on and off the court was exemplary. Well done!
The u15A team and The First Team played against Graeme in the final leg of the annual Knowling Shield on Friday 12 March. The juniors were far too strong for their opponents and didn't drop any matches for a 5-0 final score. For the seniors, James Price and Dane vd Westhuyzen outclassed their opponents and took both matches in two easy sets. The doubles teams of Rushmere/Staubo, Glyn/Croxton and Grafton/Boshoff had slightly tougher matches but eventually all three prevailed, with only Glyn and Croxton dropping a set. That gave College a 5-0 victory over Graeme, which meant the final results were as follows: Greame 2 points, Kingswood 4 points and College 9 points. In the absence of the captain and vice captain, would James Price please come forward to collect the Knowling Shield, and congratulations to the First Team!
The first team played against Kingswood in the first leg of the Knowling Shield on Friday 5 March:
The first two boys played singles and the next 6 boys played doubles and all matches were decided over the best of three full sets. James Price made a welcome return to the side but unfortunately succumbed to his Kingswood counterpart. Dane vd Westhuyzen defeated his opponent with ease which meant the three doubles teams would decide the match. After two close three setters, the College boys managed to outplay their opponents for a deserved, albeit nervous, 4 matches to 1 victory. The u15 side also found the going tough against Kingwood, but managed to prevail with a 3 matches to 2 victory.
Tennis vs Grey:
The 1st and 2nd tennis teams were away and the U15A and B sides were home for their fixtures against Grey on Friday. Conditions in PE were very challenging as strong winds favoured the home side. The senior teams were both convincingly beaten, with only Michael Rushmere and the doubles team of Tawse/Duncan recording victories. Our boys gave it their all but faced extremely tough opposition as four of their Grey counterparts were players with provincial colours. The u15 side fared much better. The As lost 3-6 and the Bs won 6-3, making it an even result for the juniors overall. Well done to the tennis players and to Grey.
The First team and the U15As travelled to Queenstown on Friday for fixtures against Queens College. It was extremely hot and both teams struggled. Our juniors quickly showed they had the upper hand and won all their matches for an easy 9-0 victory. Unfortunately the First Team struggled and went down 4-2 after the singles with Dane vd Westhuyzen and Rhain Straubo recording the only wins. That meant Queens just needed one doubles match to seal the victory and eventually ousted College 6 matches to 3.
Albany Junior Tennis:
The annual Albany Championships were played over the past two weekends and College had by far the greatest number of entries in all the age groups. Several of our boys performed well and played in finals on Sunday. The results were as follows:
u18 singles runner up: Dane vd Westhuyzen, and he partnered with Justin Croxton and were runners up in the doubles also.
U16 doubles champions: Luke Boshoff and Fletcher Grafton,
U16 singles backdraw winner: William Duncan
U14 singles: Joey Slack was runner up, but only because he had to withdraw from the final due to a broken toe
U14 doubles runners up: Brendon Owen and Max Mitchell
The Albany squad was also chosen and would the following boys please come forward to receive our congratulations for being selected:
U14s: Joey Slack, Kieran Witthunn, Max Mitchell, Brendan Owen
U16s: Fletcher Grafton, Luke Boshoff, Charles Bowren, William Duncan, Charl Pellissier, Andrew Rushmere, Murray Leith
U18s: Dane vd Westhuyzen, Rhain Staubo, Stephen Glyn, Justin Croxton
The top 12 u15s were home against Selborne in the first week of term and although neither side had practiced yet, the level of play was good. Our boys tried their best, but some matches were carelessly thrown away during the reverse singles. Those points gave Selborne the edge for a deserved 8-4 victory. Well done to the u15s and to Selborne.
The annual Albany Championships started last weekend and College had by far the greatest number of entries in all the age groups. Several of our boys got through to the quarter and semi finals and will be seen in action again on Friday. Names of the players involved will be on the tennis notice board later this week. The finals are being played at Kingswood this coming Sunday, and the boys who make it through would appreciate your support. Well done to all the boys who competed and good luck to those who will be contenders for the various titles!

Hilton/St. Anne’s Invitational Doubles Tournament September:
The College 1st and DSG 1st teams, travelled to KZN this past weekend to participate in the Hilton/St. Anne’s Invitational Doubles Tournament. They played doubles and mixed doubles against teams from Durban High School, Michaelhouse, Uplands College and Somerset College. Our boys had some tough opposition, but gave it their all and eventually overcame Somerset College for the 5th position in the doubles event. The struggled in the mixed section with the DSG girls, and finished 6th in that event. All in all they had a great time, were extremely well behaved and I received several complements about some our boys’ manners and general attitude. They are to be commended for their sportsmanship, attitude and effort. Well done!
Assembly notice 22 September:

Honours Award for Jaco Delport:
St Andrew's College has a rich tradition of sports participation and achievement, as well as a strong belief that boys who excel should be recognized. For the majority of sports offered at College, there are opportunities to learn, improve and ultimately achieve the goals a boy has set for himself. This is mainly due to strong intra and inter schools competitions on an annual basis. For some sports, however, this is not the case, and boys who wish to excel in these chosen sports have to be wholly and fully committed. In tennis, any pupil wishing to perform at the highest level, has to find time outside the normal school sports program to practice and be coached individually, and doing so around an already busy schedule.
Jaco Delport has achieved in tennis what no other College boy has been able to achieve:
Marguerite Poland, in "The Boy in You", writes: "there has never been a Tennis Honours recipient or a College Springbok tennis player and only Oliver Ransome (1914), shortly before his early death in April 1924, came close to such a sporting honour..."
Jaco's major achievements in tennis, in brief, are as follows:
- - First team since Grade 8
- - Open school champion since Grade 9
- - As an u/16 he was runner up in Albany u/18 section in Grade 9 and 10, and became Champion in Grade 11 and 12
- - He represented Eastern Province at the National Inter Provincial tournament in various age groups from Grade 8 to Grade 12
- - In Grade 11 and 12 he was also chosen for the u/19 Eastern Province Schools teamJaco's contribution to College tennis, through his attitude on the court and his ability to involve other major sports participants in tennis has been exemplary, and has helped to keep College tennis strong.
His personal commitment to excellence and training for tennis has shown determination, perseverance and patience beyond what is necessary to achieve at school level.
His ability to compete with his peers at National level, in spite of major obstacles, testifies to his internal motivation to achieve at the highest level.
Jaco Delport has met the requirements as set forth in the guide for St. Andrews College Sport and Cultural Criteria for Dress and Awards, and therefore we congratulate him on being the first boy in the history of St. Andrew's College to achieve honours for Tennis. Well done, Jaco!
The Warwick Bailey Cup started last week and the top two boys in each of the age groups, from u10 to u18 played against their Graeme College counterparts. Each match consists of 15 games and the team who wins the most games in all 5 age groups wins the tie. This format underlines the importance of playing as a team, and to not give away unneccesary games. Charles Bowren, Andrew Rushmere, Richard Rubidge, Fletcher Grafton, James Price and Jaco Delport represented College well, and the Prep boys also took plenty of games against their very strong opponents. Unfortunately too many easy games were lost by our senior teams, and the Graeme team triumphed by the narrowest of margins. The final score was Graeme 38, College 37. Hopefully our boys learned from this, and will come out fighting harder for every game against Kingswood in 2 weeks time. Congratulations!
31 March 2009 Assembly Report:
The Top 12 seniors and juniors played against Grey on Friday, and the benefits of boys selecting tennis as their major sport can be seen clearly in the results. The 1st and 2nd teams couldn’t win any matches, although 4 matches were decided in the third set tie breaker. The final scores were: 1st and 2nd teams both lost 9-0, the Junior A’s lost 8-1 and the Junior B’s lost narrowly 5-4. All our boys are to be congratulated on having a great attitude and for giving it their best against their toughest opponent on the annual calendar.
The Albany vs Midlands tennis fixture was played at various courts in Grahamstown on Sunday. Jaco Delport, James Price, Stephen Glyn, Richard Rubidge, Luke Boshoff and Charles Bowren represented the team at u18, u16 and u14 level. The midlands team proved too strong in the u12 - u16 age groups, and although some of our players won many of their matches, the final result was Midlands 102 matches to 45, and clinching 7 of the 10 divisions. Well done to our boys for representing the Albany team, and for a good all round effort.
On March 13th and 14th the 1st team participated in the Selborne/Clarendon tennis festival in East London. They played singles and mixed doubles with the DSG. They lost 13-5 against Selborne/Clarendon, even though the boys were tied at 3-3 after their singles. The matches against Border Invitational and Aliwal North were won easily, which placed the College/DSG team in the play off for 3rd position against Marlow boys playing with Hudson Park girls. After a rain delay, the singles were cancelled and 6 mixed doubles would determine the 3rd place in the event. College/DSG won that by 5 matches to 1 ending 3rd, and so doing they improved on their past two years 4th place finish.
The 1st team also played in the annual Settlers Cup Quadrangular against Kingswood, Graeme and Union High on Sunday22 March. In very hot conditions, College beat Greame 12-0 and Kingswood 8-4, but Union High took everyone by surprise and took the Cup. Although College won the event last year, the boys all gave it their best efforts and were happy to come in 2nd.
Jaco Delport has been chosen to represent the Eastern Province u18 tennis team to participate at the Interpro in Bloemfontein, and was also chosen for the EP schools u19 side to compete in Pretoria in April. What makes it even more remarkable is that he has represented EP every year while at College!
The 1st team completed their annual Knowling Shield fixtures on the 9th of March: They played against Graeme earlier this term, and seeing as their opponents had lost most of their first team players at the end of 2008, the match outcomes on paper were tipped heavily in favor of College. Our boys played solid tennis and did what they had to do for a 5 - 0 victory. Kingswood had the same result against Graeme and the boys knew that yesterday's fixture would be the decider. Jaco Delport and James Price won their singles matches in straight sets and the number 1 and 2 Kingswood doubles pairs beat our teams of Dane Vd Westhuyzen/Stephen Glyn and Tom Niven/Justin Croxton respectively. That meant the fixture was tied at 2 matches each with the last match still on court. Having won the first set, Luke Westensee and George Oberholzer found themselves 4-1 down and facing the possibility of going into a third set. Luckily they kept their cool and played some great tennis to get them back into the set. Along with the support of their team mates they managed to win the second set in a tie breaker, and in so doing, also clinching the victory over Kingswood, by 3 matches to 2.
The Albany Tennis Championships were held over the past two weekends:
258 players from all the local schools participated. The 27 College boys who participated gave their best and the results were very pleasing. Charles Bowren and James Price were both set to reach the finals but injury saw them withdrawing from the event early. Jaco Delport, Luke Westensee and George Oberholzer are to be commended for winning the u18 singles and doubles events respectively. The tournament also doubles as trials for the Albany team that will compete later this term against teams from Midlands, Border and PE and Districts.
The team has been announced: U18s Jaco Delport, James Gotz, James Price, Stephen Glyn (reserve)
U16s Luke Boshoff, Richard Rubidge
U14s Charles Bowren, James Godlonton (reserve)
vs Selbourne 26 January 2009:
The Junior A and B teams traveled to East London yesterday to play against Selborne, who, in recent years has dominated College whenever the two teams met.Yesterday was different though, and all the boys played their hearts out. Selborne had provincial players at the top of their line and our boys had to work hard to get games. Luke Boshoff is to be commended on a great performance, and although he lost, he gave his Border opponent a good scare, narrowly losing in a tie breaker. Gabriel Buchalter also deserves to be commended as he was the only one in the A team to win his match. The final results were as follows: The A's lost 5-1, B's won 6-0, which gave College an overall victory of 7-5. Our thanks must go to Mr Mackenzie who took the team to East London, and congratulations to all our junior tennis players.
