Congratulations to all the boys who participated in the River Mile on Sunday. Despite the last minute change to Bushman’s it was a wonderful success. 2012 Gala Assembly Report:
Thank you to Mr Andrews, the staff and especially the swimmers and supporters for a wonderfully successful gala. Conditions were challenging for all on Wednesday night with the cold rainy weather. I watched swimmers stand shivering behind the starting blocks but the spirit was high and the sense of competition remained great throughout. It is for this spirit and positive attitude that I admire St Andrews’ boys. 20 Standard times and 11 colours times were swum. 10 Individual records were broken, 2 of them being school records, and 3 new relay records were set. Well done to all the participants!
February Mat Danckwerts competed in the Red House River Mile last Sunday. He came 22 in his age group this year, where many swimmers compete in this event so well done to Matthew!
Assembly Report 8 February:
In the DSG short course gala Held on Monday 6 Feb St Andrews swimmers did exceptionally well. The under 14 team consisting of: D.Ramsden, M. Stainsforth, T.Bloem D.Wheeler and D.Tiffen came first and second in all their events and won the free relay. S.Briscoe came 1st in the 50m free and 50m fly at the U16 level. The open swimmers consisting of J. Myburgh, C.Gregory, A.Brown and S.Stopforth also did very well gaining 3 first places, 2 seconds and 1 third. J. Myburgh swam a standards time to win the 50 m free event. Both the under 16's and open swimmers won the free relays. Well done to all the swimmers!
Assembly Report 1 February:
It has been a very busy time for the swimmers and as usual the Collage swimmers have taken on the challenge well. In the short course gala held at Kingswood last week both Ralph Goveia and Douglas Ramsden won all their events. College did well to finish somewhere within the first three places in all but 1 event. M.J. Rosslee swam a colours time in the 50m breaststroke and Ralph Goveia in the 50m fly and free. The official results of yesterday's long course gala at Graeme College are not yet out but once again the boys swam exceptionally well. R.V.B
Assembly Report 25 January:

In the 400 free she came down 16 secs. Her time was 5.00.mins. It is worth noting that when I got here the colours time for the 400 at St Andrews was 5.10.MJ Rosslee came from behind to win a bronze in the 200 breast.Tilabo Williamson swam a 32.99 in the 11/12 50 free. Nicky smith, Jess White, Coralie Richardson, Cadyn Barker, Dayle Mc Loughlin , Emily Richardson all had personal best times some by a few seconds. Ralph Goviea, now swimming in the 15 and over age group, some boys in late teens and even 20, swam the 200 im in a college open record of 2.24.Kelly Long brought her 50 breast time to 36.92 a new U/ 16 record. In the 100 breast her time was 1.27.20, the DSG open record is 1.27.15.Unfortunately her goggles filled with water on her start which put her off her rythm in the first length. So all in all very satisfying. I hand over a program with stars and future stars.

News and results 2010:
Congratulations to all the swimmers who participated in the DSG short course gala held last Tuesday. St Andrews finished first or second in most of their events swum. It was also pleasing to see how many new school records were set by boys who swam faster times now,in the beginning of the season, than they did at the inter house gala at the end of the season. New Shcool records were set by R. Goveia, S. Stopforth and M. J Rosslee in the 50m breaststroke, D.Ramsay, R.Kieser and R.Horne in the 50m freestyle and M. Andrews in the 50m backstroke. Rupert Kieser also swam two colours times in the 50m freestyle and fly, whilst Wesley Obray swam a standard time in the 50m backstroke. An excellent season lies ahead!
Congratulations to all the boys who participated in the EPA 3rd Sasko A league Gala on the 8th and 9th of October.
Although early on in the season they swam well and their times are very encouraging.
Ralph Goveia came 1st in the 50m breaststroke 2nd in the 100m breast and 200m breast and 3rd in the 50m fly and 200m I. M. He also set new school records for 100m and 50m breasttroke and the 50m fly.

Dylan Ramsay set a new school record and finished third in the 50m freestyle.
4 boys participated in the Sunday 26 September leg of the Aquabear gala at Newton Park.
All the top clubs in the country participated, so the standard of swimming was particularly high. It was difficult for our swimmers to enter their first gala of the season at such a high level but they showed the typical St Andrew's determination to make the best of the situation.
Congratulations to MJ Rosslee for finishing 8th in the 50m breaststroke and Ralph Goviea for finishing 10th on the 50m breastroke in their respective age groups.

Swimming - Level 3 Youth Nationals Gala:
Congratulations to M-J Rosslee who participated in the Level 3 Youth Nationals gala over the weekend. This is the gala from which they choose the youth Olympic squad to participate in Singapore later this year so the country's top swimmers were there. M-J swam the 100m Breaststroke in a time of 1.12,65 finishing 8th in the country in the u16 age group. In doing so he smashed almost four seconds off the record he set at the inter-house gala this year. He also bettered his record in the 50m breaststroke event.
SA Schools Gala - Saturday 6 March:
Congratulations to Steven Briscoe who participated in the SA School Gala this weekend. He came 6th in 50 m free, 8th in 100 m free and won a gold medal for the 4 x 50 m free relay.
At the Interhouse gala on the 24th and 25th of February, the point distribution was the closest it has ever been. Excluding the 50m events, 9 new records were set, 11 colours times and 28 standard times were swum. Considering the current standard times were old colour times, gives you an indication of just how far the swimmers have improved over the last year.Congratulations to all who participated and well done to Merriman house for winning the gala.
Congratulations to Steven Briscoe who has been selected to represent the Eastern Cape for 50 and 100m freestyle at S.A Nationals in Bloemfontein on the 5th and 6th of March.

Gala Friday 5 February:
On Friday about 28 boys participated in the inter school's short course gala at Kingswood College. Kingswood proved a formidable apponent but never the less St Andrew's College swimmers managed to finish somewhere in the first three places in most of the events. The U14 side were particularly impressive by finishing first second and third in the 100m free,50m back and 50m fly events. The U16 squad did the same for the 100m free and the 50 m free events. There were swimmers who swam standard and colours times and who set new school records.
On Saturday M. Danckwerts and MJ. Rosslee participated in the Aquabear Gale in Uitenhage. Matthew finished the 100m freestyle event in a time of 1:02,55 smashing the record set by James Myburgh in the interhouse gala last year. He qualified for level two gala events. MJ broke the U16 100m breaststroke record set by David Muller in a colours time of 1:14.04. He qualified for level three gala events. There are both exceptional achievements by these two talented swimmers.
The River Mile
What a glorious day it was for this challenging event. It was wonderful to see the determination with which the swimmers tackled the distance and all the enthusiastic support from parents and friends of the school. A venture like this can only ever be successful with the help of many people. Thank you to all the staff and boys who were there to help in such a variety of ways. A special word of thanks must go to Mr Pete Andrews who arrived early to set up the course and who was there after the event to dismantle everything too. Thank you too to Mr Murray for his generosity in supplying us with boats to accompany the swimmers and for his wonderful hospitality after the mile.
The results were as follows. The junior half mile was won by Matthew Danckwerts (Upper) in a time of 14 minutes and 22 seconds. He was followed by Dyllan Ramsay (Graham) and Mat Arnot (Armstrong). The senior mile caused much excitement in that College was nearly beaten by a girl! Nick Eastwood (Graham) saved the day by tying for first place with Robyn Charter (D.S.G!) in a time of 27 minutes and 28 seconds. Second in was James Myburgh (Merriman) and third place went to James Baker from Graham.

Tudor Lacey coaches both the St Andrew’s College and DSG swimming squads:
Tudor Lacey was in Mullins 1956 – 1959
Quote from The Boy in You by Marguerite Poland:
Tudor Lacey began to make an impression at College in his junior years. By the time he reached matric, he and friend, Neil Oldridge – an exact contemporary and both members of Mullins House – made their unique presence felt. It was not surprising that Mullins won the gala year after year, and established itself, in their time, as invincible.
By the time he reached matric he had smashed most of the school records as well as other at provincial and national level. He swam for Eastern Province U15 in his second year at school and his 100m freestyle time, as an 18 year old, was already world class. On leaving school he was considered to be the second best all-round swimmer in the country, and three of his times were within the South African record for the event. In 1962 he was selected as a Springbok to compete in Japan and in 1963 his freestyle time was two seconds off the world record.
Lacey immigrated to America and in 1964/5 was a member of the USA’s All American Swimming Team. In 1966 he was ‘Athlete of the Year’ at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Unique among St Andrew’s sportsmen, however, is the fact that he was the first boy ever to be made a full Springbok while at school. He even beat a master into second place.
He is a man of great humility and depth.
In the interprovincial gala held in Uitenhage on the 23rd January, between EP, Freestate , Border and SWD, in the mens competition Simon Pheasant, a recent matriculant from St Andrews, won the 50m free was 2nd in both the 50m bacstroke and the 100m freestyle.
Congratulations to Lachlan Macdonald on being appointed swimming captain for 2010 and Nick Eastwood for being appointed vice-captain.
Office bearers for 2009:
Captain: Simon Pheasant
Vice-Captain: Nathan Reitzer
Assembly notice 5 August 2009:
On Friday six boys participated in a gala against some of the strongest swimmers in the Aquabear Swim Club and demonstrated just what hard training can do. Almost all of them swam their personal best times ever and knocked off between two and three seconds in the times they swam in the 100m events at our inter-house gala. Special mention must be made of Simon Pheasant who swam the 100m backstroke 1:00:05, four seconds faster that the new record he set at the inter-house gala and the 100m freestyle in a time of 52.90 seconds, almost three seconds faster than the current record held by Lyndon Emmerson.

Inter-House Individual and Relay Galas - February 2009:
The standard of swimming was exceptionally high this year. 28 colour times and 21 standard times were swum. Six individual records were broken and three relay records. Well done to Upper for winning both the individual and relay galas. Robyn Bouwer.
Congratulations to all those boys who participated in the long distance time trials that took place in the DSG aquatics centre on the 5th of February. Special mention must be made of Simon Pheasant who swam all his events in colours times. His time of 57.75 seconds for the 100m meter freestyle is particularly noteworthy. Michael Rosslee swam the 100m meters breaststroke in a time of 1minute 16.99 seconds. If he repeats this perfromance in the inter-house gala he will smash the record set by David Muller 6 years ago. Nick Eastwood and Arron Higgins also swam their events in colours times. The standard of swimming was high indicated by the fact that in addition to these colours times seven other boys also managed to swim their events in standard times. Robyn Bouwer
ST ANDREW'S COLLEGE RIVER MILE SUNDAY 25 JANUARY:
The Annual River Mile was held down in the Kowie River in Port Alfred in perfect weather conditions this past Sunday. It was great to see so many boys and girls participating and to see the good support from both parents and staff.
The Junior event was a closely contested affair with James Myburgh coming in just 3 seconds ahead of Matthew Danckwerts to clinch 1st place. He was followed by Campbell Gregory, Dylan Ramsay and M-J Rosslee. The Junior team event was won by Armstrong House with all six swimmers amongst the top 17 finishers. Second was Graham House, followed by Upper, Espin, Merriman and Mullins.
The Senior event saw Simon Pheasant leading from start to finish, winning by just under a minute in 24 min and 6 secs. There was a close tussle for 2nd spot with Nick Eastwood eventually coming inahead of Angus and Lachlan Macdonald, with James Baker in 5th place, a little further back. The Senior team event was also won by Armstrong House with another strong showing. They were followed by Graham, Upper, Merriman, Mullins and Espin. Our thanks go to all the staff for their assistance on the day, to the boys for their enthusiastic participation and to Mr Boshoff for arranging a successful staff cycle ride from Grahamstown to Port Alfred.
