Balloon Week Individual Shooting Champs:
http://gallery.saprepschool.com/index.php?/category/295

The Individual Championships were held on the Tuesday of Balloon Week.
Finalists in the Air Rifle discipline competed for The Lightfoot Tankard; while the Archery finalists contended for the Jock Hobson Tankard. Fine weather ensured a happy competition. All the finalists were required to shoot the qualification rounds prior to the Individual Championships, with reserves in place in the event that a finalist failed to start.
In both disciplines, an Olympic Final of ten shots is fired and scored, and announced to the spectators. The Archery final was a very close contest. Robin Murray came in as a reserve, won his first round, drew his second round which he then won on a sudden death shoot-out, and went through as one of the last two archers for the Championship. It really was a case of 'Robin Hood and an Archer': another sudden death shootout, which Robin won. C. Archer was the runner-up.
In the Air Rifle event, Richard Tyson came home as the winner, by one (1) point, ahead of Laura Bryan and Nicholas de Wet. The Parents' Air Rifle match was hotly contested, with the Mr Bryan and Niso Kamardinova determined to get the better of Chris and Michaela Leppan; and in the end, there were two points in it. Mr Edey and Morgan du Toit came third, two points further back. The Bryan family added another spoon to their collection when Laura and Sean Bryan took the honours in the Archery.
Mrs Tina van Wyk, the Mother of Nic de Wet, our Captain of Shooting, very graciously awarded the prizes to the successful shooters at the conclusion of the event. In closing, my thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the occasion so successful.

South African Air Rifle National Championships:
Three shooters from College qualified for these Championships that were held in Sasolburg last weekend.
The team score from Jared Hohne, Richard Tyson and Andrew Keeton placed them 1s' in the Under 16 Age Group, and it was a moment of immense pleasure for me to watch them receive their medals at the Prize Giving at the conclusion of the Championships. Jared had a very good shoot and was awarded bronze in the U 14 individual event.
It is only at a National Championship that provincial colours can be awarded, since shooters are required to obtain a minimum qualifying score laid down by the South African Air Rifle Association for such awards to be made. Both Jared and Richard Tyson more than met the minimum scores and were awarded EP Junior colours.
My congratulations go to all three boys on an excellent showing. Well done!

Egyptian Trophy:
The competition, held on Sunday in ideal conditions, produced some very good scores indeed. The Houses that fielded full teams quite naturally gravitated towards the top placings.
Top scorer of the day was Richard Crow, with a total of 230 ex 300. The competitiveness between Upper, Armstrong, and Espin was very strong; and this shows in the team scores produced.
A "Bull shoot" was shot simultaneously with the competition; and we are very pleased to be able to give to College, for redistribution, R220.00 to a charity of the Headmaster's choice.
The names of the finalists for the Jock Hobson Trophy, as well as the detailed scores of the competition, are published on House and Sports notice boards.
The results are as follows:

5th

Inter-House Archery September 2011:
Congratulations to Armstrong House - it was a closely contested competition!

Assembly Report 6 July:
The Oranje Vaal Open was held over half-term at Banderbijlpark. Richard Tyson, Andrew Keeton and Morgan du Toit competed in the event and gave a good account of themselves.  All achieved the goals set prior to the competition, and although there were no medals won, the team did well to achieve a fourth placing. This was the first Open competition for both Andrew and Morgan. All three boys are to be congratulated on both the effort and the success they achieved.

Assembly report 25 May 2011:
St Andrew's and Grey Colleges were fortunate enough to have a windless day for their match at the Lightfoot Range. The St Andrew's team of four (Nicholas de Wet, Captain; Jared Hohne; Andrew Keeton and Richard Tyson) produced good scores to take the match by 201 points. Top scorer was Richard Tyson, who posted a score of 351 ex 400. St Andrew's College Shooting Coach, Pepe Morton has been invited to Suhl in Germany to coach the Junior Protea side.

April 2011 Shooting:
At the Northern Cape Open Championships (held in Douglas) Jared Hohne, shooting in his first competition, was placed 2nd in the U14 age group. Richard Tyson finished 5th in the U16 age group. Both boys achieved the goal scores they set before the competition and they can be pleased with their results. Well done to both of them.

March 2011 Shooting:
A tough start to the shooting season for Richard Tyson with new electronic targets and light readings. He had aimed to improve his high levels of last year and came away disappointed but not discouraged and did well under trying circumstances.

Congratulations to Nicholas de Wet for being awarded Shooting Colours

Shooting and Archery News 2010:

Individual Championships:
Last Tuesday 12 October saw the culmination of the year's best Archers and Air Rifle shooters competing for the Individual Championships. Both the Archery and the Air Rifle competitions were shot as Olympic Finals, the qualification rounds having been completed prior to this event.
The Air Rifle competition was won by Aaron Graham, by the narrowest of margins. His final score was 336.6, ahead of runner-up Richard Tyson, who scored 336.2
The Archery competition was a fast-paced event following the new FITA rules. The competition was won by Breff Whitehead, with James Semple in second place.
The annual Parents match followed, with Mr Whitehead and Breff taking the honours in the Archery division; and Mr Leppan and Michaela winning the Air Rifle pairs.
Mrs Whitehead presented the prizes: the Jock Hobson Tankard to Breff; and the WGN Lightfoot Tankard to Aaron.
My thanks to the many who assisted at the competition, and my congratulations to all the participants.

Egyptian Trophy
This competition was shot on Sunday 3 October in truly astonishing weather conditions. Many boys will have wondered why the competition was not cancelled, or postponed to a later date; but, at this time of the year, there is never the time to make up for missed commitments, nor is there the opportunity in a crowded College programme. To those boys who braved the elements, my congratulations go to you on a job as well done as it was possible to be done. Some excellent individual scores were recorded, ensuring that the top 8 Archers were identified for the Individual Championships which take place on Tuesday morning next week. The results of the competition, in which all 12 scores counted, are as follows:
6th Mullins 804
5th Graham 981
4th Upper 1132
3rd Espin 1201
2nd Merriman 1581
1st Armstrong 1658

The South African National Air Rifle Championships were held this past weekend in Polokwane. Richard Tyson had a good competition in the U16 age group, and was placed 6th in the Olympic l0m discipline and 5th in the 3 Position discipline. The improvement in his scores since his last match is very encouraging indeed.
The weekend had its lighter side as well. After Richard had completed his matches, he was taken by our hosts on a hunt, where he was able to bag a warthog for the larder. At the prize-giving in the evening Richard piped in the guests, which added an extra flair to the event.

Interhouse Archery – 20 September:
There were three memorable moments during this year's Inter-house competition. One was the success of Moses Iputu, who got it right this year after three years of valiant effort; another was the joint effort of Luke van der Nest and Nick de Wet to shoot the competition for Merriman, replicated by Graham Maxwell and Breff Whitehead who jointly shot for Armstrong - both Luke and Graham each have a serious shoulder injury and could only use one arm; and the third was the participation of the staff, 28 of whom fired the competition.
The results are as follows, with House average scores:
6th Graham 32.4
5th Espin 33.6
4th Mullins 40.5
3rd Upper 43.9
2nd Merriman 50.1
1st Armstrong 50.7
Proficiency Tie points were achieved by 51 boys, and are valid until the end of the Trinity Term, 2011.
The staff competition was won by Mr Maffessanti, with a score of 86. Before the presentation of the staff medal and the Inter-house trophy, I would like to thank Breff, Nick, Teb and Richard for the immense amount of work they put into the competition, always ready to help those who were unsure and to encourage others who needed it.

SHOOTING & ARCHERY– Saturday 8 May  2010:

On Saturday, for once in really fine weather, the OAs fired a match against the College Air Rifle and Archery Teams.
The OA team included three past Captains: Ogie Pringle (1990); Mark Wylie (1992) and Hamish Morton (1993). Somewhat daunted by the changes that have taken place since their shooting days at College, the OAs tackled the Archery event with some trepidation, and the College team came out clear winners with Breff Whitehead producing the top individual score. In the Air Rifle event, the OAs lost by the narrowest of margins, by 6 points. Best score was posted by Richard Tyson.
In the OA individual competition, Ogie Pringle was the outright winner.
It was a great day at the Lightfoot Range, and an event enjoyed by present and past boys alike. My thanks to the College team for the coaching skills and the preparation of the course of fire. Full scores are published on the Tuckshop Notice Board. Well done to all who made the event a special one.

Shooting - 1 May 2010:
Douglas and back is a path to be least travelled, but it was a necessary one for Aaron Graham and Michael Wilkinson who were competing in the North West Open Air Rifle Championships.
Aaron had a very good shoot. He achieved his personal best score in the lOm Olympic Stand event, one point short of achieving that elusive 500 score which is the starting point for further success. He is also the first College shooter to compete in the 3 Positional event, and he has done remarkably well with only two full practices before the competition.
Michael had his first taste of shooting at an electronic target, which he found quite daunting. Nevertheless, he completed his match with consistent strings of ten; a fine attempt for a shooter who has only recently returned to the sport.
As always, the boys were great ambassadors for College; they may have learnt some Afrikaans along the way, and they made new friends. Best of all, they laughed a lot, and made the most of truly Spartan conditions, shooting in a potato shed, and sleeping at the Douglas Hoerskool hostel which is a far cry from what they have experienced at College.
My congratulations to both of them for a very good effort.

Breff Whitehead has been awarded his Colour for Shooting.

Aaron Graham and Richard Tyson travelled up to the Polokwane over half term for the Limpopo Champs and the first round of SA trials. Richard was placed 5th and Aaron 6th in the U16 age group.

Egyptian Trophy 20 September:
This is a competition between the top 12 shooters in each House, where every archer's score counts towards the overall result. The competition also identifies the finalists for the Jock Hobson Tankard who compete on the Tuesday before prize giving in the Olympic Final.
The final outcome was nail bitingly close and the full results are as follows:
6th - Espin
5th - Graham
4th - Mullins
3rd - Armstrong
2nd - Upper
1st - Merriman.

Inter-House Archery  September 2009:
433 competitors participated. The top individual score for the boys was by Michael Braun (90) and the best staff score was shot by Mr Andrew.
Final results:
6th - Espin
5th - Mullins
4th - Graham
3rd - Merriman
2nd - Armstrong
1st - Upper

MAY 2009:

Aaron Graham travelled to Kimberley to compete in the Northern Cape Championships. Shooting on electronic targets was a new experience for Aaron, who put in some good strings to improve more than 100 points on his last competition score, to be placed 7th in the U16 age group. Well done Aaron!

Shooting:
Lebo Seitisho, Jether Sweetnam and Nicholas de Wet travelled to Wolmaransstad to take past in the North West Province Championships. For both Lebo and Jether, this was their first big competition in which they competed and both were really exhausted after the 105 minutes it takes to fire a 600 match. They came away form the competition learning a great deal and Mrs Pepe Morton is encouraged by their results.
