Played = 13, Won = 9, Lost = 4

The 1st XV played Cambridge on Saturday in East London. The stage was set with fantastic weather and lots of College boys in attendance to watch the match.
The 1st XV started well dominating the early exchanges with some good interplay between backs and forwards. Robbie Ball ran a good line off some quick second phase ball went through the gap and some good hands saw Zuko Gcezengana score in the corner to open the scoring. The College team however took their foot off the gas and immediately let Cambridge in for a try of their own. The rest of the half was characterised by a lacklustre performance by the College side as they went into the break at 5 all.
The 2nd half started much the same as the first with College straight onto the attack dominating both the possession and territory, but careless errors and poor discipline led to numerous knock ons and a large number of penalties. This served to break any rhythm that the team was building up. The penalties also allowed Cambridge to grab the lead and with less than 10 minutes to play College found themselves 11-5 down despite a surplus of territory and possession. A defensive error then led to a break away from behind the Cambridge line and ended in a try for the opposition that was converted extending Cambridge’s lead to 18-5. This for the first time in the match seemed to bring more urgency to the College attack as they surged back up the field in a desperate attempt to salvage the match. They hit back immediately with a try in the left corner by Justin Ferrant. It however was too little too late and with less than 2 minutes left on the clock the College team had left it too late. The final score 18-10 to Cambridge.
We congratulate the Cambridge team for a very brave performance and hope to see an improved showing from the 1st XV vs Daniel Pienaar on Saturday.

1st XV Match Report:
The 1st XV played Graeme College in the FNB Classic Clash on Lower on Saturday. The match kicked off at 4pm in perfect conditions and the College side were keen to build on their successes from the holidays. College made a good start to the match immediately putting the Graeme side under pressure and forced an early penalty which Josh Devis duly converted. Graeme hit back with a penalty of their own and then a second to take the lead. College kept on attacking but the Graeme defence held firm and it seemed as if there would be no way through. Just before halftime flyhalf Jason Baggott found a gap and sliced through the defence to score untouched under the poles, Devis slotted the conversion and the teams went into halftime with the score 10-6 to College. The 2nd half was more of the same as College immediately went onto the attack and camped in the Graeme half. In fact the Graeme side hardly got out of their territory at all during the half, but credit has to be given to the Graemians who tackled as if their lives depended on it. Although College did create oppurtunities they squandered many of these with poor offloads and ill discipline as they conceded way too many penalties during the half. College deserved more from their efforts but in the end were held scoreless in the second half by a determined Graeme outfit who showed great commitment on the day. The second half remained scoreless throughout with College the eventual victors 10-6. Well done to the Graeme boys for a great derby and congratulations to the St Andrew’s boys on their victory.

Rugby Training Camp - April:

Bishops Rugby Festival:

From 10-14 April the College U15A rugby side participated in the Under 15 Independent Schools Rugby Festival, hosted by Hilton College in the Natal Midlands.
On Day 1 College were up against St Andrew’s School from Bloemfontein. A good first half performance saw College taking a 17-0 lead through three well worked tries. After the break St Andrew’s School fought hard and put College under continuous pressure, finally scoring in the last movement of the game, College winning the match 24-5.
Day 2 saw College up against a big Kearsney side. Again College were up going into half-time at 12-10. An early penalty in the second half saw College go 5 points clear but a runaway try at the death saw Kearsney draw level, the match finishing in a tight 15 all draw.
Based on the previous two results, fixtures were revised and College was rescheduled to face Michaelhouse on Day 3, who had won their previous two games comfortably. College again went into the break ahead at 10-7, but two quick tries through defensive errors allowed Michaelhouse to take a 21-13 lead with four minutes left in the game. College fought hard and managed to score a consolation try in the last minute of the game, the match finishing 21-18 in favour of Michaelhouse.
The boys worked extremely hard on the trip, with a number of practice sessions being held in between matches. My thanks goes to Mr Miles for all his valuable input with the side over the week; the team can now go into the domestic season with confidence as they have responded positively to the structures that Mr Miles has put in place and are starting to play a wonderful brand of rugby.

The 1st XV travelled to the Grey Festival on Saturday 24 March to play against Michaelhouse. Once again both teams were forced to face adverse weather conditions as a storm was setting in over Port Elizabeth that resulted in some of the afternoon games being cancelled.
St Andrew’s started slowly making a number of unforced errors thereby allowing Michaelhouse to get on top early. However the team defended for all its worth and managed to curtail a number of promising Michaelhouse attacks before stringing together some positive play of their own. After a lineout drive in the Michaelhouse 22, the ball was spread wide to Ryan Horne (12) who took the outside gap and scored 15m in from touch. Josh Devis (14) converted and College took the lead 7-0. The try did not settle the team and the errors continued and St Andrew’s eventually had to pay for their mistakes as the Michaelhouse flank forward drove over the line from close range to level the scores at 7 all. Both teams were playing patches of good rugby, but also made a number of errors that spoilt many an opportunity. The teams went into half time with the scores level and St Andrew’s would have the wind behind them in the 2nd half.
The errors from the 1st half remained and both teams continually put themselves under pressure before Michaelhouse managed to score off one such error putting them in the lead 12-7. College narrowed the lead through a Devis penalty before Michaelhouse tapped a penalty quickly and managed to drive over the line and convert for the score to move to 19-10 in their favour. Even with the assistance of the wind St Andrew’s could not establish field position. Late in the half and desperate for the win St Andrew’s strung together their best passages of play as they attacked the Michaelhouse line. Eventually allowing Ryan Horne (12) to go over next to the upright for his 2nd try which was also converted by Josh Devis. This all however was too little too late as the try signalled the end of the game with the score 19 – 17 to Michaelhouse, deserved winners in a tight but error ridden contest.

Rugby Results from the Grey High Festival:
St Andrew’s College 1st XV vs. Michaelhouse lost 17 – 19
St Andrew’s College U16A vs. Eezey Fana won 45 – 5
St Andrew’s College U15A vs. Brandwag lost 17 – 31
St Andrew’s College U14A vs. Daniel Pienaar lost 3 – 24

The 1st XV played Framesby on Saturday 17 March on a wet and slippery Somerset Field at the Graeme Rugby Day.
It was a tough assignment against a strong and highly rated Framesby outfit, but College started well putting the opposition under early pressure and creating some chances for points before Josh Devis slotted a penalty to put College in the lead 3-0. Off the restart College made some typical early season errors and put themselves under pressure. They defended bravely for a long period before finally conceding in the corner. The team bounced back immediately and forced another penalty that was converted by Devis to go into the break 6-5 up.
The 2nd half saw College play into an ever stiffening wind and with the Framesby flyhalf now beginning to dictate play with his boot the team struggled to get out of their own half. College defended bravely but conceded another try as well as two penalties as the pressure mounted. The first side kept battling bravely and certainly created opportunities to score, but failed to capitilise on any of these and in the end going down 6-16.
It was not all doom and gloom for the College team who showed a lot of character on defence as well as some very encouraging signs on attack. With a bit more ball and time to prepare, we will only see this College side go from strength to strength.

St Andrew's College vs Marlow:
St Andrew's travelled to Cradock to play against Marlow on Saturday the 23rd of July.  The first fifteen ran on to the field and from the kick-off it was evident that St Andrew's  College were up for the game.  They scored in the first five minutes with a try that involved some electric interplay between the back s and forwards.
St Andrew's continued to move the ball around the field and started to find space out wide.  This allowed them to get in behind the Marlow advantage line and stretch Marlow defences so that there was space for the forwards to attack around the fringes.  College went into halftime with a lead of 12 points.
Marlow never lay down and they came back at St Andrew's at the start of the second half, College defended their line for a period of 8 minutes before Marlow went over and brought the score to within seven points.  St Andrew's continued to move the ball around and when they kept it for phases, started to look threatening, they were rewarded with a try with five minutes left in the game and this sealed a well deserved victory 32 - 18.

Cape Schools Rugby Festival:
St Andrews College first fifteen travelled to King William's town for the Cape Schools Rugby festival during the half term.  The festival was held at Dale to celebrate their 150th anniversary and was a very well organized event.
The first game saw College take on Paarl Gim.  At half time St Andrews were 10 - 7 up but the Paarl Gim side changed gears in the second half and got their strong runners in around the fringes and scored two tries, winning the game 21 - 10.
The second game was against Boland Landbou and College played some really exciting rugby eventually losing the game 21 - 16. This left St Andrews to play a strong Rondebosch fifteen on the last day of the festival.   St Andrews started quickly scoring the first try out wide and this took them into an early lead.  Rondebosch were a well organized outfit and kept College out after further attacks that left them centimeters short of the line.  Rondebosch capitalized on a College error and scored from 80 metres out to bring them back into the game.  They got ahead and with 5 minutes left on the clock College were 21-16 down and were receiving the kick-off.  Unfortunately College did not regain possession and Rondebosch scored two tries in the last five minutes to take the score to 35-16.
The tour showed a nil return in terms of victories but there was some very positive rugby played by the squad and some young players gained valuable experience.  A big thank you to Mr Miles and Mr Posthumus for all of their help and expertise shown on the tour and the boys must be commended on the way they represented the school both on and off the field.

The College first fifteen arrived in Uitenhague ready to rewrite the history books as College have not won at Daniel Pienaar for nineteen years.  College started off well; scoring two tries in the first ten minutes with some explosive mauling and some direct running from the inside backs.
They allowed Daniel Pienaar to stay in touch by conceding a try and two penalties and finished the half 15-13 ahead.  In the second half College remained ahead in terms of possession and territory but could not get the crucial two scores ahead and with 5 minutes to play were only six points ahead; leaving a little gap in the door open.
Daniel Pienaar regained possession with 3 minutes to go and College managed to give away a string of penalty infringements.  Daniel Pienaar attacked the line but College held their defense together but the gap in the door opened and Daniel Pienaar jumped at the opportunity and scored the try needed to give their kicker a chance to win the game.  The conversion was made and the history books remained the same, College had lost at Daniel Pienaar 23-22.
It was a gutting experience for all involved with the first team and the side need to harness this desire to win and use it as a weapon going into the Queens game this weekend.  Once again the support was superb and it was great to watch the quality performances from the fourth, third and second teams during the day.

Played = 17         Won = 0              Lost = 17

The St Andrew's  first fifteen dominated the first ten minutes and scored first putting them 3 points ahead.  A mistake at breakdown in the Grey 22 metre area allowed them to get their hands on the ball and create a quick counter attack that led to the first try.  This allowed Grey to settle early and generate a lead of 8 points at halftime.
Grey scored 3 more counter attack tries from broken play at the breakdown and with their pace out wide they managed to convert these attacks into points.  St Andrew's College played patches of brilliant rugby and were unlucky not to score 2 or 3 more tries during the afternoon.
If St Andrew's had eliminated one or two of the errors and taken one or two of their own opportunities then the game would have been very different. The scoreboard showed a loss of 19 - 37 but this does not tell the full story of the battle on the field.
Small things make such a big impact on the game and full credit to Grey for taking their opportunities.  Once again it was a battle royale and the College spectators must be congratulated on their superb support during the afternoon.

Rugby: St Andrew's College vs Cambridge:
Lower was a picture of beauty on Saturday the 14 May; it had a thick green top with blue skies above.  The College side focused on an explosive start to the game and this they achieved with a try by Tendai Mauluka in the second minute of the encounter.  This needed to be followed up with a return to the Cambridge half but the St Andrew's  side got stuck in their twenty two for a sustained period of time and this was mainly because of their own unforced errors.  They started to wake up once again and they scored two tries in quick succession taking the halftime score to 21-3.
The second half began and the  St Andrew's College side started to mount attack after attack but lost the ball at crucial moments trying to make fifty fifty offloads.  Once they started to play with more patience things began to happen and there were some wonderful tries scored with backs and forwards linking up to get the ball over the line.  The last try of the afternoon was a snippet of what this side is capable of doing and the challenge now is to play at this tempo for sustained periods of time.
At the end of the afternoon St Andrew's ended up winning the game 40 points to 3 with patches of brilliance and sections where they fell asleep.  It has, however, shown the team what they are capable of and this confidence needs to be built on going into the Grey game this weekend.

1st XV Rugby Report vs Graeme College 7 May:
It's raining, it's pouring; the old man is snoring............., was definitely a song that echoed through my head as the first fifteen took to Somerset Field on Saturday afternoon against Graeme College.  The muddy conditions did not allow for expansive rugby and both sides had to keep it tight, kick for territory and try and wrestle the ball over the line.
Graeme scored first off a line-out 10 metres from the College line and this fuelled the home side's engine room making the task to come back that much more difficult for College.  College had their own opportunities in the first half but were unable to convert these into points because of unforced errors caused by the muddy and wet conditions.  The halftime whistle blew and College were trailing by seven points.
The second half began and College found themselves with a line-out on the Graeme College five metre line.  Under pressure the ball was thrown to the back and the pack managed to drive the ball over the line and score the first College try of the afternoon.  Conditions under foot were appalling and the conversion was missed leaving College two points behind with twenty minutes to go.
The rain continued to bucket down and the mud wrestling went on with each pack fighting for every metre on the field.  College managed to get back into the corner five metres out from the Graeme line and continued to maul and attack the try line.  Graeme defended like men possessed and kept the College pack out; but eventually with three minutes left on the clock College went over the line and moved into the lead at 10 - 7.  The game was certainly not over and at the next kick-off Graeme College got into the College five metre area and had attack after attack; but College did not stop defending and kept Graeme out and in so doing won the game 10 - 7.
The biggest thanks must go to all of the spectators who stayed and watched the entire game in the wet and freezing conditions.  It was this support and the way both teams gave everything they had on the field of play that showed that school boy rugby in Grahamstown is still played in the right spirit and is certainly alive and well.

College 1st VX at the King Edward VII Easter Rugby Festival
On the 20th of April the St Andrew's College first team squad arrived at OR Thambo International where it became clear that the weather was going to be cold and wet.  Three games of rugby were played at the festival, two of these were won and one was lost.
On the first day St Andrew's played against Westville and won the game 13-12 with Andrew Kebble going over the line with ten minutes to go, College then held on to their lead playing sensible rugby in the wet conditions and squeezed out a victory.
The second game was the main game on the Saturday vs the hosts King Edward VII.  The crowd was packed into the ground and the St Andrew's College fifteen unfortunately got off to a poor start conceding early tries and letting the hosts hit their stride early on.  To College's credit the boys bounced back at half time and won the second half 14-10; but it was too late and the game was lost to a very good King Edward VII side 41-14.
On the last day St Andrew's played against St Alban's in a tight encounter.  St Andrew's College were 13-17 down with a minute to play when Jason Kankowski picked up and drove around the fringe to score the winning points and St Andrew's won 18-17.
The festival showed that this side has a will to win and they have the ability to hang on to the very end.  It has given a number of players exposure to first team rugby and an opportunity to test out various combinations.  The lessons learnt from this tour need to be implemented in the months ahead as the team start the main part of the rugby season.
A big thank you to Mr Posthumus and Mr Miles for all of their input and help at the festival and to Richard Rutherford for all of the hours spent filming and coding games.
We are looking forward to the rest of the season.

U15 Independent Schools Rugby Festival:
14 Independent school's from all over the country participated in the Under 15 Independent Schools Rugby Festival, which was successfully hosted by St Andrew's College in Grahamstown.
After the first day of scheduled fixtures, teams were then matched according to their strengths, with Kearsney, Michaelhouse, Helmekaar, Kingswood and St Andrew's College looking the strongest teams at the festival. The College side started off the festival on a high with a good 37-10 win over Hilton.
The second day of fixtures saw College take on Kearsney in a very exciting and tense game, with College ultimately winning the game 28-19. This game showed the depth available in this age group with a number of fringe players showing that they have the ability to step up and perform at this level.
The last day saw College take on Michaelhouse. Down by one point with three minutes left on the clock, College scored and converted through a careless error by the Michaelhouse fullback, allowing College to win the game 18-12. College and Helpmekaar were the only two unbeaten sides at the festival and the boys must be congratulated for their performances and behaviour both on and off the field in what was a very successful three games for the squad as a whole.
My thanks to Mr Allan Miles and Mr Pete Andrew for all their efforts in ensuring that this festival went off so smoothly and also to the ground staff who ensured that Lower was looking spectacular for the occasion. Also a big thank you to the large contingent of parents, staff and local boys that showed the team great support over the week.

Rugby vs Maritzburg College:
The first team played against Maritzburg College at the Grey rugby festival.  College started with the wind at their backs but did not use this effectively and found themselves 23 - 14 down at halftime with Maritzburg punching around the fringes.  College got themselves back in the game by scoring first in the second half and it was 23 - 18 before the Maritzburg College scrumhalf started to get in behind the advantage line and allow the Maritzburg backs space and time on the ball. College continued to run at Maritzburg and they fed off the mistakes and scored some opportunistic tries at the end of the second half.  Maritzburg won the game 59 - 18.  The next assignment is in Johannesburg vs Westville, KES and St Albans and support from those in Johannesburg would be much appreciated.

St Andrews College vs Grey Bloem 26 March 2011:
1st XV Match report
Going into the game against Grey Bloem, College were under no illusions that this was going to be a tough and physical encounter.  The game was played at the Graeme College rugby festival which was a well organised event where boys, staff and supporters were well looked after.
The College first fifteen were committed from the very first kick off and took the first three points of the game.  Grey was then allowed to get their hands on the ball in the College twenty two and they attacked around the fringes with their big runners getting in behind the advantage line and converting their opportunity into points.  College began to settle down and found they kept the ball for a number of phases but were unfortunately unable to convert this pressure into points.  Grey started to mount attack after attack but the College wave of defence put in a number of big tackles that forced Grey into making a number of unforced errors.  Grey was very effective when they turned over ball at the breakdown and then created space for their speed out wide.  The College pack can be proud of their scrum work where they put Grey under pressure, taking a tighthead and shoving them backwards on a number of occasions.  At the end of the game Grey scored their sixth try and the game finished at 36 - 3.
The College first fifteen left everything they had on the field and can be proud of the way they fought from the beginning to end.  It is not often you lose to an opposition but take so many positives out of the game, but this is one of those occasions where the losing team can be proud of their performance.
It is important that the College side grows in confidence after Saturday's fixture and works even harder at practice this week, as they focus their sights on the game against Maritzburg College in Port Elizabeth this weekend.

19 March 2011 St Andrews College vs Framesby:
The College first fifteen consisting of nine new caps had a tough afternoon on Lower vs Framesby.  It was evident that the players were nervous as they took to the field and unfortunately the nerves got the better of them in the first 25 minutes as College struggled to hold on to the ball for more than two phases.  This allowed Framesby to settle down quickly and take control of the first half.  College fought hard on defence and kept the score to three points.
If College had eliminated the handling errors and found their rhythm after half time the game would have finished differently but unfortunately the errors continued, giving the ball back to Framesby putting pressure back on the College defence.  The number of tackles made started to take its toll on the College fifteen and this led to three tries being scored by Framesby leaving the College side trailing by 23 points with 5 minutes to play.  It was only then that the College side started to play with more confidence but by then the horse had bolted and the game finished up with Framesby winning by the 23 point margin.
The new caps will now understand the pace of first team rugby and the team will have realised the importance of holding onto the ball once you have it.  This is a College side that has tremendous potential and this performance was certainly not a reflection of their ability.

 RUGBY 2010

The captain of rugby for 2010 is Ryan Dugmore and the Vice-captain is Grant Prior.

CITATION FOR RUGBY HONOURS - Ryan Dugmore 5 October 2010:

Ryan has had an outstanding career as a rugby player at St Andrew's College. He has represented College at A team level throughout, and made a considerable impact in each team he played. He first represented the 1st XV in his grade 10 year in 2008, and went on to play 57 matches with distinction. He is currently the most capped first team rugby player. This in itself is a remarkable achievement. Ryan was awarded Rugby Colours in 2008, 2009 and again in 2010 for excellence in this sport.
In 2009 Ryan made the U18 EPCD academy side, but had to withdraw due to an injury. In 2010 he was selected as the captain of the EPCD craven week side.
In the tournaments, festivals and matches played this year Ryan's reputation preceded him and in a number of matches he came up against highly rated scrumhalves from other schools and through his play and leadership abilities he was able to still stand out above these players.
Ryan is a gutsy and skilled scrumhalf who despite having played in the first team from 2008 was always working on improving various aspects of his game. His ability to coordinate the defensive lines at the break down point and his awareness of where the available space was to play into on attack were two of his great assets.
The intense devotion that Ryan has for rugby at St Andrew's College has not only been expressed in the teams that he has played in but also in the role that he has played in coaching and managing the junior Espin house team for the past three years as well as his involvement on a regular basis at the College under 14 rugby practices this year.
His role as captain of this successful 2010 team was inspirational. His motivation and exemplary play resulted in exceptional victories against seemingly impossible odds. He is a natural leader who demanded complete and total commitment from the rest of the team and was able to motivate, as well as critically analyze other player's performances. He was goal-driven to achieve success for the team.
As the coach I would like to express the opinion that Ryan is certainly a worthy recipient of an Honours award for rugby.
H Searle

1st XV vs Kingswood College (43 - 15):
In this much anticipated end of the year clash the score line suggests one way traffic in an easy game. This however was not the case. The Kingswood team were determined in the tackle and break down area and the collisions points were fierce. The College XV were however able to soak up the pressure placed on them and keep the ball moving and with it the Kingswood defence. By changing the points and modes of attack and pace of the game we were able to slowly build up dominance and score some great tries. The end result was a pleasing 43 - 15 win for the College side.

Rugby Results vs. Dale College 31 July:
1st XV vs Dale College (31 - 0):
The forwards once again put in a great display in the set phases where they were not only able to secure good first phase ball for College but also disrupt much of Dale's ball. The ability of the 1st XV forwards to hold onto the ball for long periods of time was very important in this game as it starved the dangerous Dale backline of possession. The backline not only showed great discipline on defence, the Dale SA School's centre only managed to break the line once during the whole game, but also showed some sparkle on a number of long range attacks.  The end score was a hugely satisfying 31 - 0 victory to St Andrew's College.

Rugby vs Hoër Landbouskool Marlow 24 July:
1st XV vs Hoër Landbouskool Marlow (21 - 13):
Playing their last game of the season on Lower, the College 1st XV wanted to finish this part of the season's chapter in style and were hoping to play some expansive rugby. The history books suggested that this encounter was to be a tough one, the biggest winning margin for either side since the resumption of the annual fixture being 10 points. Having set a good platform in the first half, with good defence and some promising attacks, College were hoping to start the second half well and be able to build on their hard work in the first 35 minutes. Unable to put points on the board in the early stages of the second half and not holding on to the ball for long periods of time frustrated the College XV and further motivated the Marlow boys, who if they had held onto a few passes at critical times could have put the 1st XV under alot more pressure towards the end of the game. The final score was a 21 - 13 victory to St Andrew's College and it was the first time since 2005 that they had managed to go unbeaten on Lower.

17 July vs Framesby:
1st XV vs Hoërskool Framesby (18 - 7):
The 1st XV had to work hard to secure a win a against a determined Framesby team this Saturday. We made the numerous tackles that were forced on us by a straight running and mostly single minded attack of the home team and soaked up pressure for long periods, especially in the second half. The options taken on attack by the College side were sometimes rushed and the fluidity evident in the last few games was not apparent. As such we did not create as many scoring opportunities for ourselves as we had have liked to. Despite this the team was able to score one try in each half and are looking forward to their last game of the season Lower this Saturday. H.Searle

Under 15A - Dale Festival:
At the start of the July holidays the Under 15A side travelled to King Williams Town for the Dale Under 15 Rugby Festival. We played two tough games, one against Outeniqua from George, where we went down 26-3 and the other against Jeppe from Johannesburg, where we lost 12-10. The boys are to be commended on their efforts as we did not have a full strength side for either of the two games but nevertheless came away from the festival having learned a lot, allowing many of the fringe players an opportunity to gain valuable experience playing at a higher level. Scott Jackson

The St Andrew's College 1st XV travelled to Falcon College in Zimbabwe in the second week of the July holiday, where they participated in the Independent Schools Rugby Festival. Having the opportunity to play against two Zimbabwean schools was an opportunity that all involved were looking forward to as these schools are renowned for the tough, no nonsense brand of rugby they play. At the same time the team were aiming to play a more expansive game up in Zimbabwe, where the pressure of losing to the traditional rivals was not an issue. Their enthusiasm and intent to play well were clearly evident in all three games. The focus of winning set phases and dominating the breakdown was still important, but the ball was given more air and the forwards and backs played wonderful "College Running Rugby" and scored a total of 22 tries at the festival.

The 1st XV would like firstly to thank the Johannesburg parents who were hugely accommodating in accepting the boys into their houses and feeding them for two evenings. This was a tricky exercise considering that it was during the world cup, boys were flying and driving in and out from all over SA and doing so at different hours of the day. Secondly, a big thanks to all those parents and particularly the OAs from Zimbabwe who made the trip up to Falcon College to support the team as well as the event, which in itself is an important festival for private schools in southern Africa. Thirdly many thanks must go to the staff involved, namely Mrs Mallett, Mrs Ranchod, Mr Haakonsen and Mr Miles who made sure that everything ran smoothly and helped create the environment in which the team perform at their best. Finally, the College 1st XV would like to thank Falcon for hosting an extremely well organised festival, where all the needs of the players were clearly foremost in the thoughts of the organisers and as such allowed all of the teams to put on a great display of rugby over the three days.

1st XV vs Selborne College (39 - 7):
The game against Selborne College on Saturday did not catch the faithful followers unawares. Selborne produced their expected physical and direct approach, while the St Andrew's College defense manned up at the break down and then their attack moved the ball around when they had the opportunity. The set pieces were once again great platforms for attack and this along with good control at the tackle area allowed for good fluidity between backs and forwards and as such the ball was moved more freely than in the last few weeks. A good use of the boot by the half backs at critical times also meant that the 1st XV was playing to space and keeping the big Selborne pack moving throughout the game. Despite leaving a few scoring opportunities out on the field the 1st XV can be very pleased with a good end to the first half of the domestic season.  H.Searle

1st XV vs Grey High School 29 May:
The College 1st XV showed great discipline on defence and fantastic patience on attack in the encounter with Grey High School on Saturday.
The ability to effectively close down all the Grey attacking options in the midfield and out wide from the beginning of the game and matching them up front in the scrums and lineouts frustrated the opposition and disrupted their pattern of play.
Even though both the College tries were scored after sustained attack by the forward pack there was some great work done by the backs in breaking the Grey defensive lines and had them scrambling at times throughout the game.
The way in which the 1st XV played on Saturday is an indication that they have great faith in each other to do the job as a team and they can be commended on a fine 20 - 13 victory.

1st XV vs Daniel Pienaar 22 May:
The 1st XV ran out 17 - 3 winners in yet another tough and physical encounter against Daniel Pienaar on Saturday.
The work done by the College XV tight forwards, in particular, was once again influential in the success of the day as they once again were dominant at scrum and lineout time. Despite only scoring one try in each half St Andrew's did look threatening and created other great scoring opportunities throughout the game, but were just not able to capitalise on them.
All credit to the opposition who put their bodies on the line and defended with great vigour. They often had one or two players down after a period of play and had to make a number of forced substitutions during the game.

1st XV vs Graeme 8 May:

The Classic Clash between Graeme College and St Andrew's College on Saturday turned out to be a one sided affair. The end result being a convincing (76 - 0) win for the home team.Graeme however did have opportunities in the first half and were the first team that could have crossed the line, had they not knocked the ball on in the College 22 with an open try line. The College XV were able to absorb much of the early pressure and quickly close down any subsequent attacking moves from the opposition. The forwards were once again hugely influential in the game. They were able to hook four tightheads and disrupt almost every lineout that Graeme had. The result was a large amount of possession which then gave the backs a chance to run in some scintillating tries.

St Andrew’s College hosts FNB Classic Clashes 2010:First National Bank started the FNB Classic Clashes sponsorship with only 10 rugby matches in 2001. Almost 9 years later the FNB Classic Clashes has grown to 94 schools, 47 rugby matches, 20 netball matches, a host of sports festivals across South Africa and a dedicated magazine television programme called the FNB Classic Clashes covering all the events.Together with Momentum and Spur, we are proud to be part of this rugby celebration that preserves an important part of our national cultural heritage. We did not foresee how quickly we would grow the Classic Clash initiative. We look back with a smile at 9 years of great partnerships and support from the schools, the governing bodies and the communities.Since 1878  St Andrew’s College and Graeme College have enjoyed a long history of Derby Days and have had many pupils passing through their corridors who are well know in rugby circles, Nick Mallett (St Andrew’s), Russell Bennett (St Andrew’s), Hennie Le Roux (Graeme) and Dirk de Vos (Graeme) to name but a few.The two schools have had the longest rugby rivalry in both their histories – for approximately 130 years. The first printed reported rugby match was on 13 April 1878 with Graeme winning a try to a goal and the St Andrew’s second team winning their first game by one goal and three tries to none.Graeme College has had three distinct periods in the schools’ history; namely 1873 to 1897 when it was the Public School, 1897 to 1930 when it was the Grahamstown Public High School and then from 1931 when it became a boys’ only school and was named Graeme College.According to archived records the first match against St Andrew’s College was in 1878. School records of match results since 1922 are as follows: 100 matches have been played, with St Andrew’s winning 71, drawing 6 and losing 22.The hype around the annual Derby Game between Graeme College and St Andrew’s College was taken to a new level in 200t when the game had reached FNB Classic Clashes status. This year the match takes place on Saturday 8 May.The FNB Classic Clashes will be hosted at St Andrew’s College on Lower Field which will definitely be packed with eager spectators enjoying schoolboy rugby at its best.

1st XV vs Die Brandwag:
The game on Saturday against Die Brandwag Hoerskool was a keenly contested affair. The College 1st XV were however able to maintain their composure and show glimpses of the form that they have had during the season. The end score was a reasonably comfortable 32 - 17 win to St Andrew's College.
The 1st XV struggled to find their rhythm in the game as the opposition were very committed at the breakdown, willing to give away a number of penalties and eventually a yellow card in their efforts. The ferocity and numbers that they put into this contested area allowed for them to constantly disrupt the flow of the game and thus keep them in the game.
Saint Andrew's did also play too much of the game in their own half and as such were not able to put the Brandwag side under enough pressure with their sweeping attacks. In the first half we were able to get into the Brandwag 22 meter area on two occasions and scored tries each time.
College had some good fluidity early in the second half and able to score two tries in the first fifteen minutes. The rest of the half however was very stop start with both teams having niggling injuries due to the physicality of the game. Brandwag showed great character and fought hard right until the final whistle and were rewarded for their efforts with a try in the last movement of the game.

1st XV vs Cambridge 23 April:
The 1st XV joined the rest of the rugby club in making a good start to their domestic season on Friday afternoon, when they won their game comfortably against Cambridge High School.Getting quality possession deep in Cambridge's territory early on in the game meant that they were able to slip straight back into the effective attacking pattern of play that they had been working on in the preseason games and as a result scored early in the game. This early score gave them the confidence to carry on playing in this manner. Because of the fast pace of the game they were then able to play into the space that Cambridge left in defence and create more great scoring opportunities. It was a pleasing all round performance as the boys maintained structure and discipline throughout the game and the team is really looking forward to playing there first home game on Lower on Saturday.

Summary of the Bishops and Saints April Festivals:
1st XV vs Bishops:
A thoroughly entertaining game of rugby was played on the Piley Rees Field on Saturday the 27th of March. Both teams wanted to keep the ball in hand and play their typical brand of running game, despite it being early season. As such the large crowd gathered were treated to seven tries during the game.Bishops were able sneak back from a 12 point half time deficit to win the game 25-24 when they scored their fourth try of the afternoon from a drive off a lineout in the last play of the game.
1st XV vs FNB Invitation XV:
With the presence of a very water-logged field on the opening day of the Saints festival, there was not much chance of the 1st XV throwing the ball around. They were however able to keep the ball in hand and get good go forward ball by making use of forward runners from the breakdown. This made the opposition spend a lot of their time defending in their own half and we were able to score four well worked tries on the day. The final score was 27 - 10
1st XV vs Wynberg Boys High School:
With the field being drier on the Saturday and with the boys being more used to the conditions there was an opportunity for the 1st XV to display a bit more of their running game against Wynberg. There was a good balance between the use of forwards runners and moving the ball through the hands of the backs. This put the Wynberg defense under pressure and the 1st XV were able to build on the hard earned 18 - 10 lead at half time and scored three unanswered tries in the second half to win the game 37 - 10.
1st XV vs Noordkaap Hoërskool:
The Noordkaap pack presented a formidable task to the 1st XV in our final game of the festival. Their physicality in the tight and at the breakdown, were made even more of a factor when it rained on the morning of the last day which made playing a looser game more difficult for us. Keeping it tighter in the first half did manage to tire there big pack out but it also limited our attacking options as they were strong at the breakdown point and we were not able to recycle ball as quickly as we wanted. In the second half the ball moved more freely around the park and this put Noordkaap under pressure and we were able to score to great tries and slot a penalty late in the game to come back from a 0 - 7 deficit at half time to win 15 - 12.The 1st XV would like firstly to thank the parents and boys who provided great support at Bishops and at Saints and secondly thank Mr Miles and Mr Mallett for their role in the organisation and coaching that they did over the course of the 12 day trip.  H.Searle

Under 15 Tour to Cape Town and Independent Schools Rugby Festival - Nelspruit:
After an extremely disappointing 5-0 loss to Bishops the Under 15 boys regrouped at the Rugby Performance Centre in Riebeek West with the 1st XV and had a very intensive 3 days of training before moving on to the Independent Schools Festival, hosted by Penryn College in Nelspruit. Our first fixture against St Andrew's Bloem started badly and it took very stern words from our Director of Rugby, Mr Miles at halftime to get them firing in the second half. We managed to turn around the small deficit and win the game 15-12. The next day we played against a powerful St Stithians line-up and ended up winning 8-0, showing great determination in defence. On the last day we were paired in what was billed the main game of the festival against Kearsney and whilst we went down 22-12 it was great to see the boys fight back after being 17-0 down at halftime. The team has learned a lot in a short space of time and can be confident going into the season ahead. My thanks to Mr Louw for helping out on the tour and also to Mr Miles for organising the whole trip which was a fantastic experience for this talented squad. SA Jackson

1st XV vs Glenwood:

In a fast paced and physical encounter, the 1st XV showed glimpses of the same form from last year and won the game 20 - 7. There is a still a lot of hard work ahead, but the boys are keen and motivated to carry on building on this good start.

The forwards really took the game to Glenwood which disrupted their game plan, while the backs defended manfully, shutting down the space in which Glenwood could attack.

When College had ball we were confident in our ability to move it around the park and at the end of the day had more legs and more determination than the opposition.

The 1st XV would like to thank the school for their support on Saturday. There were a few moments in the game where we had to dig deep and the encouragement from the sidelines was invaluable.

RUGBY 2009

Captain: Brian Makamure
Vice Captain: Heinrich Smit

Honours for Brian Skosana:
Brian Skozana, a matric pupil at St Andrew’s College, has played centre  for the 1st XV since 2008. In the junior teams he played flank. It is always difficult for a forward player making the move to a backline player but Brian showed so much skill it was easy for him to adapt to this new position.

In 2009 he came into his own in this position as outside centre. He played a integral part in the 1st xv game plan.

At the start of the season he was elected captain of the 1st xv for the first three games.

In the April holidays he attended the International Rugby Academy of New Zealand. This all paid of as he was selected for the EPCD team to attend Craven Week.

In the first two games at Craven Week he made such a impression, that he was selected for the SA Schools team to play against Italy and England.

After being selected for this team he was selected for the SA High Performance team to play against France and Namibia. This team would make the core group for the U/20 world cup team for 2010.

Brian is the first player since 1974 to represent SA Schools.

This is a remarkable achievement when you considered that Brian made a positional move only a year and a half ago.

Rugby vs Dale College Saturday 1 August 2009:

1st XV report
The last game of the season on Lower required a special effort by the 1st XV, but the boys stood up to the challenge and managed a well deserved and uplifting victory. The efforts of the teams that played during the build up to the main game definitely gave the first team, who had a mix of veterans like Macdonald and Smit and youngsters like Mlamleli, Henderson and Kebble, a huge boost of confidence.
College had a brilliant start to the game when they kicked off, put Dale under pressure when receiving and as a result turned over the ball. They were then able to recycle it very quickly and get it wide to the danger men Smit and Macdonald. Smit made the break and Macdonald rounded off with a great try with in one minute of the start of play. This was followed by a great try by Dane van der Westhuizen in the 10th minute. He spotted a gap next to the ruck we had set up, broke through it and ran 20 meteres to score.
With a number of changes to the usual 1st XV there was a lack of continuity in the first half, despite having much of the possession and placing Dale under a lot of pressure we were not able to make the most of the scoring opportunities we created.
Towards the end of the first half and in the second half of the game, Dale started to play their more typical game of offloading to their strong runners in the tackle situation and they were able to put a lot of pressure on our defensive lines. The 1st XV however were prepared for this and tried to take the ball carriers to ground and slow the game down and also compete at the tackle situation. This was done very effectively by our loose trio who all focused hard on playing to the ball.
In the middle of the second half Dale Austin scored a converted try to give us an 18 - 10 lead and we were pushing hard for a try to seal the game when Dale managed to pick up an intercept try from within their half that they converted. This set up a tense final 5 minutes but College held out and there was much jubilation and sadness when the whistle blew for the final time on Lower this season. The final score was St Andrew's College 18 Dale College 17.
Mr Wylde, the previous headmaster, sent a sms after the game that summed up the performance of the 1st XV as well as that of all the teams that played for College on the day - Nec Aspera Terrent.
Points scorers:
Grant Macdonald - 1 try
Dane van der Westhuizen - 1 try
Ian Herold - 1 penalty

Rugby vs Marlow Agricultural School Saturday 25 July 2009:
1st XV report
When the two first teams met on Saturday afternoon one could not have asked for better conditions, despite the grass being white from cold mornings along the river, the field was springy and the footing good, there was no wind and the air was filled with the expectancy of a game that was going to be hard fought.
From the kick-off it was evident that Marlow knew they had to slow the game down as much as possible. They managed to do this quite efficiently with their strong mid-field and rangy loose forwards. The Marlow men were determined on defense and either held the St Andrew’s College boys up in the tackle or prevented the ball from emerging when attackers were taken to ground. This made it difficult for the College 1st XV to get any fluidity into our game.
Marlow got off to a good start and put us under pressure in our own half with good kicking and solid defending. They were able to convert this pressure into points and were up by 13 points after 12 minutes of play.
The St Andrew’s 1st XV never dropped their heads and played with great courage but were unable to build enough pressure from the possession we had. As a result the Marlow defense was never stretched much in the first half and the half time score was 3 – 13.
In the second half we had more of the possession and spent a huge amount of time in Marlow’s territory. We were however still unable to build enough phases to get the Marlow defense scrambling. This despite creating half gaps and line breaks off set phases where we were on the front foot and it looked promising for the boys who were itching to get the ball moving. Our solitary try came off a set move early in the second half where Grant Macdonald used his fancy footwork to first dazzle his opponents and then win the footrace to the line.
The return of two od our Craven week players to the forward pack was welcomed and we did not stand back to the much bigger side in the scrums and lineouts or any of the contact points. Ryan Dugmore was also on top form. He not only marshaled the team from the breakdowns and set phases but he distributed well and he also got in the face of the opposition.
The team was disappointed by the loss and the fact that they were not able to finish off some promising plays, but is looking forward to the last game of the season on Lower!Points scorers:
Dale Austin – 1 Penalty
Grant Macdonald – 1 try
Ian Herold – 1 conversions and 1 penalty

St Andrew’s College vs TONBRIDGE (UK)

The game between St Andrew’s and Tonbridge started at a very fast pace. They spread the ball very quick across the field and dominated the contact area excellently. Good second phase balls and good running lines from the back line made it possible for St Andrew’s to run in with two very good tries. Tonbridge were not intimidated by this. They showed lots of skill between their forwards and backs. They entered the game by playing good physical rugby. They scrummed well, and this put St Andrew’s under  a lot of pressure. The Tonbridge forward pack started to dominate and St Andrew’s College could not lay hands on ball. When St Andrew’s had the ball the support play was not forthcoming and that’s were they lost possession.
College played with out same of their key players but hats off to Tonbridge who played brilliant rugby.

vs KINGSWOOD COLLEGE 20 JUNE 2009:

The much anticipated “K-Day” clash between Kingswood College and St Andrew’s College was played in pleasant conditions on Lower Field on Saturday in front of a huge crowd.

St Andrew’s put early points on the board through some well-worked tries, with Kingswood landing a long-range penalty by John Hale in response. Good set-piece play and incisive running from the St Andrew’s backs kept Kingswood under constant pressure and it was only resolute defence from Kingswood that kept St Andrew’s at bay. Unfortunately this pressure took its toll with Kingswood losing a number of players to injury.

The pattern continued after the break and St Andrew’s accumulated further points through a number of exciting tries. Although the match was never all that closely contested, Kingswood never stopped defending and put in a good effort all the way to the end.

Final score: St Andrews 43 Kingswood 3

Tries by: James Gotz, Grant Macdonald 2, Brian Makamure, Ross Campbell, Brian Skosana and Justis Luttig

Conversions: Nick Mills x  4

vs Selborne College 13 June 2009:
First XV Report
A beautiful autumn day made for ideal playing conditions when St Andrew’s College took on Selborne College in East London on Saturday. St Andrew’s really put in a top performance in the first half scoring three unanswered tries going into the break 20-0 up. Effective linking between backs and forwards led to the three tries being scored out wide.
After the break, Selborne changed tactics and kept the ball close to their big pack of forwards. They were very effective in the line-outs and mauls and put St Andrew’s under a lot of pressure. Despite a good passage of play and an excellent try out wide, small mistakes meant that St Andrew’s could not add to the scoreboard. Selborne hunted the score down and a late converted try sealed an excellent game of schoolboy rugby for them.
Final score: St Andrew’s College 25, Selborne College 28.
Points scorers for St Andrew’s were:
Tries: Ian Herold, James Price, Brian Makamure and Dane vd Westhuyzen.

ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE vs QUEEN’S COLLEGE 6 JUNE 2009:
In a match played in cold, blustery conditions in Queenstown, St Andrew’s made good use of the wind to pin Queen’s back, right from the first kick-off. This pressure resulted in early tries for St Andrew’s and from then on it was always going to be difficult for Queen’s to get back into the game.

St Andrew’s produced a classy second-half performance which saw a number of scintillating tries being scored after well-executed inter-play between backs and forwards. The St Andrew’s side used the new rules to good advantage and were most impressive in the driving malls.

Injuries did not help the Queen’s cause but it was St Andrew’s who produced their ‘A’ game on the day and good defence in the face of some enterprising Queen’s play, did not allow Queen’s to build up any momentum at all.

vs GREY HIGH SCHOOL 30 MAY 2009
First XV Report
St Andrew’s College and Grey High School clashed in a highly entertaining game of rugby on the Lower Field in Grahamstown on Saturday. Playing with a stiff, cold wind at their backs, Grey made better use of their opportunities to go into a 16-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game. This despite St Andrew’s mounting repeated attacks on their line. Errors at critical times prevented St Andrew’s from converting possession and territory into points. Late in the first half a good tactical kick ahead bounced favourably for left wing, James Price, to gather and power his way over in the corner. The half-time score was 16-5.
The second half saw St Andrew’s playing their way back into contention with a second try by James Price being scored out wide, after a full line movement. The last 10 minutes of the game produced pulsating rugby with the game flowing from one end to the other. An ambitious counter-attack by St Andrew’s saw James Price receiving the ball deep in his own half from where he ran 30m before kicking ahead and outstripping the Grey defence to dot down in the corner. With the score 16-15 to Grey, Price stepped and slotted a difficult kick in windy conditions to put St Andrew’s ahead. With time up on the clock, Grey had one last chance to snatch victory with a long range penalty in the middle of the field. Unfortunately for Grey the kick went wide and St Andrew’s had secured a memorable victory.
Final Score: St Andrew’s College 17 Grey High School 16

St Andrew's College vs Daniel Pienaar Technical High School 23 May 2009
St Andrew's and Daniel Pienaar were engaged in a hard-fought battle on Saturday in Uitenhage, with Daniel Pienaar eventually running out 18 -17 winners.
The first half was a relatively evenly-contested affair, with Daniel Pienaar making better use of their chances. Good, solid defence by Daniel Pienaar prevented St Andrew's from crossing their line. St Andrew's have themselves to blame for some 50/50 passes, unnecessary knock-ons and some poor decision-making.
In the second half St Andrew's showed more urgency in their play and better ball from the breakdown made it possible for them to put some decent backline play together, thus gaining momentum. With the score 15-0 to Daniel Pienaar shortly after half-time, St Andrew's were always going to have to play catch-up rugby. St Andrew's ran in three good tries in the second half, but it was a case of "too little, too late". The game ended with St Andrew's strongly on attack but the ball was kicked ahead and the ball won the race to the line.
Final score 18-17 to Daniel Pienaar.

St Andrew’s College vs Cambridge High School 16 May 2009:
St Andrew’s College hosted Cambridge High School from East London on a windy afternoon in Grahamstown on Saturday. Cambridge had come off a good run of victories and were always going to put pressure on St Andrew’s playing without a number of leading players who were attending final EP trials. Playing with the wind in the first half, St Andrew’s tried to play a very enterprising brand of rugby with lots of possession. This approach was hampered somewhat by some crucial handling errors and by pressure from Cambridge at the breakdown. The score at halftime was still very close and this stayed that way until near the end of the game when some good play by St Andrew’s, keeping the ball in hand, saw them take the game away from Cambridge after Cambridge had got to 15-18. Good support play between the St Andrew’s forwards and backs saw a number of effective attacking moves and it was a result of this that saw all 5 tries being scored by the backline.

ST ANDREW'S COLLEGE vs BISHOPS DIOCESAN SCHOOL 4 APRIL 2009:
In blistering heat the match between St Andrew's and Bishops struggled to really get going. Water-tight defence made it really difficult for both teams, the first try only beIing scored after 27 minutes of play by Bishops. Earlier James Price had slotted a penalty to give St Andrew's the early lead. Bishops showed lots of passion by winning ruck after ruck and keeping the ball close to their forwards. Normally the St Andrew's defence is good around the fringes. They lost concentration and left that channel open for Bishops to run in for the first try. St Andrew's replied with a penalty by James Price soon thereafter. St Andrews varied their play between forwards and backs very well. This started to show cracks in the Bishops defence, especially in the midfield. St Andrew's attacked this space more and more. Poor decision-making and passes not going to hand cost St Andrew's tries on four occasions. Bishops played very conservatively by just keeping the ball close to their forwards. This paid off for them and they ran in two more tries. One of the tries coming from the halfway line when late in the game they showed great skill with inter-play between forwards and backs to score under the poles. The try of the day belonged to St Andrew's, when Grant Macdonald scored from a counter attack that started on the left side of the field and ended in the right hand corner. Good long passes and brilliant running lines made this try very special. Two more penalties by James Price kept St Andrew's in the picture. Five minutes from the end the score was still 11-12 to Bishops. On the day St Andrew's could only blame themselves for losing this match, having squandered a number of good opportunities.
Final score:
St Andrews 11 Bishops 17

St Andrew’s College vs Hudson Park High School - 28 March 2009:
In a game played in blistering heat, St Andrew’s showed a lot of improvement from last weeks match against Brandwag. The emphasis on improved handling and decision-making during the week showed on Saturday. In the first half there were still signs of nervousness by some of the new players in the team, but this settled down after the first two tries by Heinrich Smit and James Price, who rounded his opponent to score under the poles. St Andrew’s dominated the set-pieces and the contact areas at the rucks. This gave the back line a good foundation to attack from. The back line players ran good attacking lines whilst the Hudson Park defence did well to close down the space on the out side.
In the second half St Andrew’s made more use of the “pick & drive” and driving from the line outs. This forced Hudson Park to defend closer to the rucks creating more space on the outside and St Andrew’s made good use of these opportunities to score out wide. The forwards were able to get good momentum from fly-half, Smit, and centre, Nick Mills with all the tries being scored by the backline. This was just reward for showing a willingness to run the ball. Ball retention in the tackle was the only area which let the side down in what was otherwise a good performance from the St Andrew’s team.
Final score: SAC 49 Hudson Park 13
Tries: James Price 2; Nick Mills 2; Heinrich Smit; James Gotz and Brian Skosana
Conversions: James Price 7

SAC vs BRANDWAG 21 MARCH 2009:
With a very young pack of forwards, St Andrew's College 1ST XV took on Brandwag 1ST XV, who have a good strong pack. This was visiable in the first half as College hardly had any possession. Brandwag used their pack of forwards very effectively, keeping the ball close to them, they dominated the contact area very well. Lucky for College they could not use this possession effectively and could not convert this into point and College managed to get the ball three times in broken play and scored three times.
As the match progressed, the Brandwag forwards could not contest at the breakdown. College had far more possession.
Numerous handling errors and poor decision making prevented College of scoring more tries. St Andrew's managed to run in with four tries to the one by Brandwag.
Lots of positives could be taken out of this match, but there is lots of room for improvement. In all it was a good day at the office for College.

SAC vs GRAEME COLLEGE: 9 May
The prerecorded FNB Classic Clash will be aired on TV, but they are unable to give us a definite date. At the moment it looks like the 1st or 8th of June.
St Andrews continued their dominance over Graeme when they won them in the annual FNB Classic Clash.
St Andrews run in with seven tries, five of them in the first half, to no tries by Graeme. St Andrews looked rusted after a long break, but got their footing very soon. James Price showed great form and scored 22 points.
Just when it looked like St Andrews going to run away with the game, to many handling errors and bad decisions were made. In the second half St Andrews straggled to finish of same brilliant moves. A lack of match fitness showed when they could not get to the break down and dominate the contact area. Too many turnovers were made. In this time Graeme really did play well.Justus Luttig was the pick of the St Andrews pack. He gave them lots of go forward and were outstanding on the defence. In all not a bad performance by St Andrews, who almost played a month ago.

Under 15 Rugby Tour to the Independent Schools Rugby Festival hosted by Woodridge College:
Over the Easter Weekend 21 players and 2 staff left to attend the Independent School's Rugby Festival at Woodridge outside Port Elizabeth. Sixteen schools in all from around the country attended, and the competition was tough.
The St. Andrew's team tried hard but struggled against the more physical and better conditioned sides they came up against. The team played three matches in total and lost all three. Our matches against Somerset College and Penryn College were close fought affairs where College had the vast majority of the ball. Unfortunately the team's decision-making let them down. Our other match against Hilton College, one of the top three teams at the Festival, was a game of two halves. We competed very well in the first half and matched them physically, but our inability to make tackles in the second half let us down and they ran out comfortable winners.
The boys showed an eagerness to do well, but will need to continue to work hard the rest of the season. Their behaviour both on and off the field was exemplary and Mr. Mackenzie and Mr. Mhunduru thank them for an enjoyable weekend.

1st XV vs Queens:
The St Andrew's College 1st XV were not able to deliver a clinical performance in their game against Queen's College on Saturday. With half the team having played in the EP Craven week trials on Friday afternoon the energy levels were a bit low and the usual sparkle was missing. The team however dug deep and used the supportive and vocal home crowd to inspire them to play with passion and commitment against a defensively organised and very spirited Queen's team.
The first half was a very stop start affair with lots of penalties and a large number of reset scrums as such both teams never developed any rhythm or flow and the first half ended with St Andrew's leading 5 - 3.
The second half carried on in much the same manner as what had happened in the first half. St Andrew's were however able to use their territorial advantage better in this half and score more often from visits to the opponents half. The end score was a comfortable but hard fought 21 - 6 victory to College.
