Hockey 2012:

2012 Hockey Fixtures (subject to change)

18 & 19 May Match Fixtures

Match reports Wed 16 May:
U14B vs Graeme College 2nd XI:
The team was overwhelmed by the opponents as they were some older and stronger boys in the Graeme team. Our boys were timid and afraid with Noah playing in the goals for the first time. Enright and Williams made terrific runs and penetrated the defence often unfortunately the striking pair of Birrell and White never got the ball as often as the coach would have liked. The second half saw the boys getting a bit more aggressive and eager for the ball which lead to only 2 goals and much fewer shots from the opposition. Final result: lost 0-5.
U14A vs Victoria Park:
College started off the game slowly and then after about ten minutes started putting together good passes which resulted in a number of entries into the D. Some good inter-linking down the right hand side resulted in good pressure on the keeper and a solid finish from Peter Tharratt. We had numerous opportunities to score due to domination of the mid-field by Rose, Tiffin, Marx and Kirkpatrick followed up by excellent crosses into the D, but we were unable to convert. Victoria Park countered very well just before half time and forced a short corner which they converted.
The second half was very similar to the first without either side being able to score. Palme ran exceptionally hard and rattled Victoria Park’s play maker enabling College to turn over lots of ball but we failed to use it to score. This meant a 1-1 score line at full time. A result was required due to it being a knock-out and so a European Penalty shoot-out was held. College won the toss and decided to shoot first. Rose, Tiffin, Tharratt, Marx and Kirkpatrick were chosen to shoot for College. Rose, Tiffin and Tharratt scored 3 quick goals. Zak Schlebusch played a key role by saving three of Victoria Park's attempts and suddenly it was 3-1 and College had won. Well done on another good win. IH
U16A vs Victoria Park:
After a very slow start during which we seemed intent on passing to the opposition, Liba Mawala combined well with Liam Sofianos to score a very good opening goal. Towards the end of the first half we started playing some more constructive hockey and mounted several promising attacks. The second half was much better and we managed to put in two more field goals by Liam Sofianos and Liba Mawala. The opposition discipline started getting ragged towards the end and the game became a bit of a card fest. We need to take heed of this and to learn to not get caught up in these situations. Final result: won 3-0. PA
U16C vs Port Alfred:
Grass .....oh grass!! All I can say is that the uneven surface humbled us and our assumption of how good our skill level was. Port Alfred gave the boys a shock by scoring first through a dust cloud from a rapid and skill-full counter-attack. The boys kept their composure, but the uneven surface was too much for most. Straight sticks was a skill that only two of the players mastered successfully and if it wasn't for Nick O'Connoll we would've been in some serious trouble. Ghutto Ocharo managed to run and delivered passes consistently it into the D, but we struggled to finish on numerous occasions. Luckily, Andrew Meiklejohn and someone else in a dust cloud made contact to score just prior to see us dashing off the field after a close encounter. 2-1 phew!!  JP
U16D v Kingswood U14B:
We played with 10 men. I had been hesitant to put in a 12th as I knew that I could not sub, as I would be blowing the game and did not want someone on the bench, unnecessarily. At practice on Tuesday, they all indicated that they would be there, but alas! Moses was m.i.d (Missing in Design) Jayes manned his troops and they played good attacking hockey, keeping Kingswood on defence. We managed to capitalize on this (or the fact that they were wondering how one of the Kingswood MOTHER'S (!) happened to be blowing the game!) Nonetheless, we scored early with a deflection off Meintjies stick and continued to put pressure on the opposing side. Brown was solid and continually forced breakaways that had Kingswood under pressure at all times, this led to errors on their part but we were unable to use our short corners to our advantage. Mgudlwa played with skill and managed to worm his way with consummate ease through their defence, but was unable to make that last manoeuvre into the box. The score remained 1-0. I was very proud of the boys and the manner in which they conducted themselves, they played hard, but fair and were good ambassadors. Final result: won 1-0. MR

Coaches reports vs Cambridge:
U14A vs Cambridge
The U14A game was played on grass which required quite some adjustment. We played a much more direct game with a structured approach in Cambridge's half. This led to a good early goal from an excellent move down the right hand side and an excellent finish from Roland Palme on the left post ; this was followed by a another good team build up through the midfield involving Daniel Rose, William Marx and a good finish by Daniel Stegmann. The Cambridge side used hard hitting from the back to try to clear the ball out of defence but the College boys stood off and were able to cut out the ball and drive straight back; Daniel Rose and Peter Tharratt in particular created good scoring opportunities. The second half included a few short corners from a number of attacking opportunities; one of which Bruce Phillips finished with a good strike into the right hand corner. Tim Bloem showed some pace and skill at centre forward to score the 4th and final goal. This was a good win on a surface we are not use to playing on.  College won 4-0.
U16A vs Cambridge
The U16A side put in a good first performance against a game Cambridge team on Saturday. Rex Blaine opened the scoring with an excellent solo run and a good finish some 10 minutes into the game. The ability to counter-attack led to numerous forays into the Cambridge 22m area and some wonderful touches from Tom Lane and Gordon Everard led to some clinical finishing. Gordon Everard scored two goals and Ben Dovey also got on the scorecard. Cambridge managed a consolation goal late in the game. James Marriner covered lots of ground in the midfield whilst Ben Stijkel marshalled the defence effectively.
 U16B vs Cambridge
Having not played on grass for some time, we took a while to get to grips with the surface once again. Throughout the first half, our attack was a bit one dimensional and as a result, we lacked any real penetration into our opponents circle. This meant that we were unable to set up many good scoring opportunities. The second half saw a far better performance from the team where we were able spread the ball effectively and began to set up some good scoring chances, which were duly converted. The game ended 4-0 to College. A good start to the season and a solid all-round team performance! Well done!
U16C vs Cambridge
After Saturday, I wish all our fixtures were on grass. The boys defended with straight sticks and the required bravery on grass. Not too low (to protect their valuable teeth), while sacrificing their shins on occasion. Sebastian Niven had an excellent game running on attack and scrambling effectively on defence. Rohal Gopal our stingingly accurate left wing caused damage twice; Guto Ocharo our reliable trapper contributed in all phases and Sean Gooden, scored the straightest-flying short-corner-rebound goal recorded on grass.....ever! The width the team created caused gaps that Nic O'Connoll and Andrew Meiklejohn took expert advantage of which saw Meiklejohn score the simplest and cleanest of all goals, evidence of vision and precision in the team. Well done boys, good luck in Port Alfred on Wednesday!
The SAC 3rd hockey team took on a young and enthusiastic Muir College at the Rhodes astro last Wednesday 9th May.
Prior to the game, the men of the Mighty Thirds had already decided that keeping position of the ball and stringing passes together for long periods of time would be the goal for the season. With only 10 men, SAC showed their experience as they pushed hard in the first 20 min going 2 – 0 up. It was evident by half time that the boys were exhausted as they had run their hearts out for their fellow team mates. The second half showed some fantastic hockey as the midfielders and defenders kept control of the ball, allowing our attackers to move up field. as a result they scored another 2 goals,  but  unfortunately conceding a last minute counter attack goal from the opposition, the game ended up 4 – 1 to College.
Congratulations must go to the entire team as they showed fantastic commitment throughout the game. The boys played in great spirit, with encouragement and  enjoyment.
2nd XI vs Cambridge
The 2nd XI had a difficult task ahead of them this previous weekend, the reason being that it was the first official fixture of the season and it was to take place away from home on grass. Boys in the past have had a rather tentative approach to matches on grass but the 2nd XI boys took to the task with good purpose, and gave everything they had. They adapted to the ‘foreign’ surface effectively and dominated significant periods of the match. Getting on the score sheet first settled some nerves as it looked like one of those days where we would dominate territory and possession but not score goals. The team persisted with their pattern which paid off as they won a well fought 2-1 victory. A very important result which I believe will have a significant bearing to the way the season may develop. A great team performance!
1st XI
The 1st XI began the game with controlled attacks due to some hard-running from Brad Pieter and some excellent defensive work from Chris Brown. Unfortunately, a lack of switching channels allowed the hard-working Cambridge links to get into the game and this put pressure on our defence. York Senior, on debut, made a fine save from a Cambridge penalty corner which lifted the team. A number of opportunities to score were created, with Nick Embling and Chris Bailey both having opportunities. At half time the game was finally balanced, but the College team felt that they had the upper-hand and just needed to take their chances. This was not to be and it was Cambridge who took one of their few chances to seal the match. Charles Bowren and Simon Muchura were typically hard-working in midfield and Myles Crossland very composed in defence. Result: 0-1.

Matches – Wednesday 9 May:
3rd XI beat Muir College  4-1
U16B lost 2-1 to Port Alfred 1st XI in a very close encounter.
Sean Gooden and Vinci Rader were solid in defence throughout the match, while Veli Motsilili and Liba Mawala created lots of pressure on the Port Alfred defence with their skill and reading of the game. Plenty of opportunities were created in a match that could easily have gone the other way. In all a very good game against stronger and faster opposition!
U16C vs Kingswood 4th XI
Debut game! and nerves a- tingling. The u/16C (super) squad took the field against towering Kingswood opposition. The shadows thrown by the close marking of the Kingswood players were easily avoided as the College side kept the ball wide, the game open and beating the man with ball pace. James Holmes and Matt Kriel did some excellent defensive work, as well as setting up good attacks. Andrew Meiklejohn and Nick O'Connoll took advantage of the midfield gap after the first half which saw us tied at 1-1. The man of the match award went to Guto Ocharo, who made some great surging runs throughout the match, pounced on a loose ball and with utter contempt for the back-board flicked the ball with sheer pace and control high into the top corner. Well done boys on a solid 3-1 victory!
U16D vs Kingswood U16C
The U16D side had a terrific start to their season with a 7-2 victory over their Kingswood opponents. Brendan Owen was outstanding in defence and made some excellent passes to the forwards. Sebastien Foster and Jono Jayes combined well on the left, but it was Andrew Meiklejohn who opened the scoring from a penalty corner shot. Sbu Mgudlwa was well positioned on the post to deflect another well-timed Owen pass to increase the score, while Brendan himself beat the keeper with a well-struck shot. Myles Brown was solid in defence, and Nic Moses equally hard-working on attack. Sbu and Jono each added a goal before half-time to make the score 5-0. Some pressure from a hard-running Kingswood team led to College conceding a couple of goals, but they were soon on the attack with further goals from Sbu and Andrew Meiklejohn.
U16E vs Graham 2nd XI drew 3-3.
After conceding three “soft” goals against the run of play, the team converted superior possession and territorial dominance into three superb goals, to draw 3-3 against the robust and skillful Graeme second team.  All three goals were scored by Jared Hohne.  Aggressive defence and excellent use of space meant we could pin our opponents into their own half, forcing the Graeme attack to operate in a single channel.
U14B vs Kingswood U14B drew 1-1
Captained by Olli Keiser who played centre striker as well as centre link! The boys were very nervous and it showed as they were unsure of themselves and had little confidence at the start. This slowly changed towards the end of the first half and the team pushed forward with Ham Allison pushing the ball to Mark Cunningham who had a shot which deflected off the goalie and Luke Birrell slotted the goal. In the second half the Kingswood players grew in confidence and it showed as they were territorially more dominant and equalised with a goal. Final score 1-1!

Hockey 2011:

The Hockey Club began its 2012 campaign successfully on Saturday at Grey High School. The Malaysian squad was divided into two squads, namely the 1st XI and Thistles. The St Andrew’s College 1st XI beat Grey 2-1 in an exhilerating encounter, and then followed this up with a solid 4-2 victory over Woodridge College 4-2.
The Thistles squad from St Andrew’s College which is made up of some senior and U16 players drew 1-1 with Woodridge College and 0-0 with Grey U16A, where they showed hard-running and a disciplined defence.

Interhouse Hockey:
The Junior competition gave the opportunity for more players to get involved this year as a B division was introduced for the first time.
Although the Upper House parade and fashion attire was impressive and intimidating for some they did not challenge successfully for a top spot, finishing 4th ahead of Mullins (5th) and Merriman (6th). A tough contest between Armstrong, Espin and Graham for the top spot, saw Graham emerge as the victors, ahead of Espin in 2nd place.
Congratulations to the Graham Junior B team.
The Junior A competition was more fiercely contested, as previous winners, Mullins lost some points early in the competition. A wary Armstrong, Espin and Upper watched as the unknown quantity from Merriman emerged as potential dark horses. In the last vital match, Armstrong needed to score 1 more goal to win the trophy, and in a pulsating climax to the competition they failed to do so and which left Espin victors, ahead of Armstrong (2nd), Upper (3rd), Mullins (4th), Merriman (5th) and Graham.
Congratulations to the Espin Junior A team
The senior competition saw some brilliant hockey from a talented group of rugby players from Upper. Cahill and Rushmere looked at home on the turf as they lost narrowly to Espin and drew to favourites Mullins in a great match. Seb Williams-Wynn was hard-working as ever for Merriman, as they edged Graham into 5th spot. In a tight match for 3rd and 4th spot, the Upper side was victorious against a gallant and skilful Armstrong. The final match between the 2 favourites, Espin and Mullins was a hard-fought affair, with Espin scoring an early goal thanks to some great work by Simon Muchura. However, the skill and composure of the Mullins team saw them to a 3-2 victory to retain the trophy. It was also a fitting end to the season for Paul Selwyn-Smith who has finished his hockey career at College having played 79 times for the 1st XI, as he scored the winning goal with some terrific individual skill.
Congratulations to the Mullins Senior team.

Results vs Dale College 30 July:
U14a 1-0
U14b 3-1
U16a 1-3
U16B 1-0
2nds 0-0
1sts 0-3
The 1st XI had a very good start to the match, with Charles Bowren and Paul Selwyn-Smith controlling a hard-running Dale midfield. Richard Rubidge and Josh Nuttall found the strikers in space on a number of occasions, but unfortunately, they failed to convert the chances. In addition, the Dale goal keeper pulled off some terrific saves. Dale began to create more space for the front runners as the match progressed, and were able to convert an early second half opportunity. This deflated the College side, who had controlled most of the match to this point. Dale capitalised on this and scored 2 more goals to take the game out of College's reach. Despite a determined onslaught by the College team towards the end of the match, the Dale defense held firm and College suffered another match in which they failed to take their chances in front of goal.

U14A won 6-1
U16D lost 0-4
U16C won 6-1
U16B won 2-1
U16A lost 1-2
3rds lost 0-2
2nds drew 1-1
1sts drew 0-0

The u14 C team played some excellent hockey with good ball distribution from the halves and excellent passing between the links and strikers. Playing against some U16 boys meant that the opposition made strong tackles however, the skill of the College boys, notably Nicholas O Connell, Sebastian Foster and James Stoddard was outstanding in attack with Sibu Mgudlwa and David Biggs dominating play in the links. Kamogelo Kekana neutralised the Kingswood attacks with his tight marking and solid tackling. The coach was very pleased with the team and how they played.

The U14Bs had a very evenly contested game against Kingswood in their first ever K-Day fixture. Initially, we saw ourselves under a bit of pressure as we battled to maintain our structure on the field. Fortunately, we were able to absorb this pressure due to some fine defensive works from the likes of Adam Godlonton and Chris Sherratt. The second half saw St Andrews begin to assert control over the game and we began to pass the ball well enabling us create a few decent scoring opportunities. This eventually culminated in a well taken goal by David Harvey which proved to be the match winner. 1-0 in the end.

The U14A side played some of the most constructive and attractive hockey so far this season. This was especially the case in the first half when the passing and running into space was excellent. The back four Malcolm Pringle, Kyle Groenewald, Tom Lane and Stuart McMaster used the space to good effect; they were able to change the channel in order to move the ball out of the congested area of the field into the space. This enabled College to attack quickly and effectively. James Marriner and Veli Motsilili made some excellent runs down the right which created good opportunities which were well finished; Gordon Everard, Xolile Mdlokovana, Murray Long, Daniel Scholtz, and Tom Lane all got onto the score sheet. On defence Grant Dixie had a quiet first half in the goals, but was called on to make a couple of good saves in the second half. The team was also able to turn over the ball quickly largely due to the links stepping-up quickly onto the ball carrier - Ant Dakin closed midfield down effectively. The match was played in a good spirit. The entire team contributed to a good win.

The U16D team comprising mainly U15's, played the 4th Kingswood team, who totally outsized them. James Holmes and Richard Hobson tried valiantly to stem the tide, and Matt Huber defended for all his worth, but on the day we were just too "little" and lost 4-0.

U16C Brendan Owen scored in the first movement of the game and this gave the team some much needed confidence. The rest of the half was tight; we scored a scrambled goal and Kingswood replied just before half time. The start of the second half was equally hard fought and determined tackling by Cawse, Niven and Gooden kept us in the game. Two quick goals by Bassett calmed the nerves and we finished strongly with McCarthy setting up one goal and scoring a cracker. A well-deserved 6 - 1 victory.

The u16B side came out yesterday with a purpose to return to winning ways, it was a very evenly match, with College having the majority of the possession, but unable to capitalize on our chances, but converted one 5min left in the half. But a lapse in concentration lead to the scores being leveled before the end of the half. The second half saw some fantastic team play with a lot of heart, which resulted in the team scrambling and converting in the dying seconds to take a deserved victory. Special mention to the goal scorers Sam Easther and James Godlonton, but to mention only a few is no justice on the performance of the team. Well played lads!

3rd XI In an exciting, end to end game the St Andrew's College 3rd team lost to Kingswood 2 -0. Kingswood went 1 - 0 up in the first half and although the St Andrew's boys had a number of opportunities they were unable to equalize. Kingswoods second goal came in the last few minutes of the game. Teb Schlebusch had a fantastic game in goals, accompanied by some excellent defending by Luke Harvey and Peter Harrison.

1st XI: The College team began the match with a few well structured attacks, in particular Charles Bowren and Matthew Frew penetrated the Kingswood defence on a couple of occasions but we failed to convert this advantage into scoring opportunities. Kingswood's defence was well-organised and. As the half progressed, Kingswood took more control and the College defence struggled to get the ball out of their own half, through good closing down by the Kingswood attack. College managed to get themselves back in the game with some great defensive work by Paul Selwyn-Smith and Chris Bailey. Shortly after this, Richard Rubidge had a terrific run into the Kingswood circle, only to see his pass narrowly evade Alan Gerber's stick. The 2nd half saw a far more open match, with both teams defending with discipline and control. The midfield battle was evenly contested, with Kingswood having the slight advantage as they were able to 'find' their strikers more regularly. The final few minutes were nail-biting as College's defence desperately held on, while Kingswood had three short corner opportunities but failed to convert them. The enthralling encounter finished 0-0.

Saturday vs Pearson:
U14A won 7-0
U16A won 5-0
1st XI won 3-1
The 1st XI had another tough match against Pearson on Saturday, and had to work hard to secure a 3-1 victory.

HOCKEY VS QUEENS 4 & 5 June:
The majority of the fixtures against Queens proved to be nail-biting encounters with evenly matched teams up against each other both on Friday and Saturday. The 2nd XI, U14C and U16C recorded impressive wins over their rivals and showed spirit and determination throughout their matches.
The 1st XI match was a tightly contested encounter with both sides showing great flair, skill and passion. Queens scored early in the first half through a defensive blunder but College came back strongly to control most of the half. College was rewarded with a penalty stroke which Paul Selwyn Smith flicked easily past their keeper to even the score.
The second half was an equally impressive and entertaining spectacle but unfortunately Queens managed to force a short corner in the dying seconds of the game which resulted in a goal. Queens therefore ended up the victors 2-1. The loss was hugely disappointing for the team but they can hold their heads up and deserve to be congratulated on a fine performance against an impressive opposition. GP Marx

1 June 2011: Congatulations to Tom Lane for being selected for the EP U14 squad

25 May 2011 Congratulations to Charles Bowren, Charl Pellisier and Chris Brown who have been selected for the Eastern Province U16 squad.

Results vs Grey HS:
U14C lost 0-5
U14B lost 1-5
U14A lost 0-5
U16D lost 0-11
U16C lost 0-4
U16B lost 1-11
U16A drew 1-1
3rd XI lost 1-5
2nd XI drew 1-1
1st XI lost 0-2
On Friday the hockey club enjoyed the support of most the school, many staff and parents as they took on Grey.
The U14A, played with tremendous heart; and the final score does not do their efforts or skill justice.
Both the U16A and 2nd XI played some very good hockey to draw their matches, and in particular, the quick passing of both teams was a feature which certainly put their opposition under pressure.
The 1st XI began their match well, and needed to convert any early pressure into goals against a very skilful Grey 1st XI. Unfortunately this did not happen, and it was the opposition which took advantage of some College errors and 2 goals in 3 minutes was a real setback for a 'game' College side. Charles Bowren, Charl Pellissier, Alan Gerber  and Paul Selwyn-Smith showed their skills and worked hard throughout the match to try and get a goal back, but in the end a composed and well-organised Grey team deserved their 2-0 victory.
Many thanks to the school, staff and parents who supported on Friday and made for a wonderful afternoon of entertaining hockey!

Hockey vs Cambridge:
The St Andrew's College  1st XI stared well against a hard-running Cambridge team, but the College attacks were met by a disciplined and well organised defence. This meant that there was little space for the strikers, and the skill of the College links was neutralised. Despite this, Charl Pellissier worked hard to find space and came close on a couple of occasions. Defensively, the St Andrew's team found the Cambridge skills difficult to contain, but determined tackling and good clearances by Greg King and Josh Nuttall gave the team some relief. The 2nd half saw the St Andrew's College side enjoy most of the possession and territory, but a lack of imagination and width made it easy for a more than competent Cambridge defence. A counter-attack by Cambridge in the last minute led to a short corner, from which Richard Crow made a terrific save to ensure that the final score remained 0-0.
Results:
U14B won 5-1
U14A drew 1-1
U16C drew 1-1
U16B won 4-2
U16A lost 1-2
2nd XI won 3-1
1st XI drew 0-0

Wed 11 May
U16D v KC U16C:
The Kingswood team was aggressive, confident and quick and the College boys were hesitant in the beginning but worked hard and defended with determination. As they grew in confidence, they really enjoyed themselves and started opening up the play - special mention must go to Christian Laws who made the most of a long pass and a lapse in the Kingswood defence and scored a wonderful goal.
James Holmes was very solid in defence and the boys voted him "Man of the Match".
I was absolutely stunned at Bryn William's natural goalie ability! The boys behaved like true gentlemen at all times, never throwing hockey sticks or shouting out. College won 1-0.
U14B vs Graeme 2nd XI
The u/14B's were under pressure from the start and Graeme College scored an easy first goal. The boys counter attacked in the second half and scored, bringing the score to 1-1. The rest of the game saw us absorb all the pressure as Graeme missed a few opportunities. 1-1 on the final whistle!
U16C vs Kingswood
The U16C team dominated the game against Kingswood, but went 1 goal down after Kingswood scored though a breakaway. College were also frustrated by a brilliant display from the Kingswood goalkeeper. College equalised through a snapshot by Trent Basset, but soon went a goal down again. The second half was a more open affair, with both sides missing numerous chances, but College managed to scramble an equaliser. Sean Gooden, Brandon Haynes and Orlando Hutchings were the outstanding performers.

U16B beat Alexander Road 5-1
U16A beat Alexander Road 3-0
2nds beat Alexander Road 7-0
1sts beat Alexander Road 4-0

The St Andrew's 1st XI enjoyed 2 good wins against Graeme College and Alexander Road High School over the weekend. On Friday, on Webster, the match against Graeme saw a dominant College midfield which forced Graeme into a more defensive mode. This proved difficult to penetrate. In addition, the College team found the counter-attacks by Robbie Blaine hard to defend against. However, despite being tightly marked the College strikers were able to find a little space and Paul Selwyn-Smith and Charles Bowren showed great skill themselves to help College go into half time 3-0. The second half continued with a similar pattern, with College enjoying most of the possession and territory, with the odd counter-attack from Graeme. Two further second half goals sealed a deserved 5-0 victory for St Andrew's.

On Saturday morning, St Andrew's had to work hard to gain control of the midfield against Alexander Road. The early exchanges indicated that it would be an open game as both sides had good skill in the midfield and pace up-front. Alan Gerber's hard running and positional play sealed the first College goal, Matthew Frew, whose skill in midfield was a feature of the game, found Gerber unmarked in front of goal with a 40m pass who had an easy tap-in for his second. College began to take more control of the game and eventually ended up 4-0 winners with Rhain Stuabo and Paul Selwyn-Smith adding the other goals.

Sat 7 May U14A vs Alex:
In the first fixture of the season the U14A's produced a convincing 9-1 win, especially considering that there had been little time to practice. The team played some very good hockey sticking to the basics and playing as a unit. There was some fantastic interlinking between the midfield and the strikers. Notably Gordon Everard was fed some very good ball by Tom Lane and Anthony Dakin which he used brilliantly to score seven goals.

Wed 4 May U16D vs Kingswood 4th XI:
Despite the larger, faster, and in a few cases more skilful opposition, the College team played with guts and determination! The defence was solid, with Sheldon Dolf, in particular, making terrific tackles on their main striker. Kingswood enjoyed much of the early possession, and a combination of good marking and poor finishing by Kingswood meant this pressure led to only 1 goal. The College side had sporadic attacks, but each time they grew in confidence, which finally paid off when Richard Hobson scored from an acute angle to beat their very agile goalkeeper. The 1-1 final score is a great result for team which had to work incredibly hard against a more experienced side!

ISHF at St David's 2011 report:
Both the U16A and 1st XI took part in the Independent Schools Hockey Festival, which was superbly run at St David's in Inanda.
This was the U16A squad's start to the season, and despite having been on holiday for 3 weeks, they acquitted themselves very well, playing good hockey to beat St Stithian's, draw with St Andrew's (Bloemfontein), and narrowly losing to a strong St Alban's team. They lost the other two matches against St John's and St Benedict's, to come away from their festival having gained huge experience and self-confidence.
The 1st XI also played attractive hockey in a number of their matches, particularly in drawing 1-1 with both St John's and St Stithian's, and beating St Benedicts convincingly. They lost 4-0 to a talented and skillful St David's team, but also beat St Georges from Zimbabwe 2-0, and equalised in the last minute to draw 2-2 with St Andrew's from Bloemfontein.
Both sides played with great determination and courage when they were under pressure, and the 1st XI received a great compliment from one of the leading umpires at the festival, who regarded them as his favourite team to umpire as they tried to play attractive hockey, as well as the fact that they 'got on with the game' and did not question umpiring decisions.
An accolade of which we can all be proud!

1st XI Hockey Results - Founder's Festival @ Dale College:
The 1st start to the season appeared on paper to be a most daunting one, as they were pitched against some traditionally tough hockey teams. After going down 3-0 in the first match against Parktown, they responded the next day with an impressive victory against a talented Rondebosch team 1-0, and escaped with a 1-1 draw against Glenwood, one of the top sides of the festival. On Sunday the team drew with both Potch Boys' High and Northwood, where we unfortunately failed to convert our goalscoring opportunities. The final match saw the team beat a hard-running Affies 1-0, to complete a very good start to the season.
Best wishes to th 1st XI and the U16A who will be competing at the Independent Schools Festival at St David's in Gauteng during the holidays.
Congratulations to Paul Selwyn-Smith and Joshua Nuttall who have been selected to represent EP U18 side at the National Provincial Tournament in July.

1st XI report:
St Andrew's began the match with some penetrative attacks, against a solid and well-disciplined KC defence. However, early opportunities did not materialise into goals. Paul Selwyn-Smith, James Briscoe and Justin Croxton all worked well to create pressure on the KC defence. KC began to assert themselves in midfield, and some poor defence by SAC led to some panic and KC scored with their first shot at goal. The midfield battle continued as both sides battled hard to gain the ascendancy. KC produced effective counter-attacks which put SAC under enormous pressure at the back, and the SAC defence struggled to get the ball out of their half. However, late in the half, an overhead from Josh Nuttall found James Briscoe who made a strong run into the D and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to equalise.
The 2nd half saw neither side dominate, as both sides tried hard to defend with more discipline. Both sides created half chances on the counter attack, but couldn't convert these. Some panic in the SAC defence with less than a minute to go lead to penalty corner and had the crowd on their feet as KC tried to win the match with the last shot of the game. The ever calm Wayde Guedes defended the goal and the match was drawn 1-1.
Thanks to all those students, players and staff who supported the 1st XI on Wednesday night and helped create a wonderful atmosphere for the players to enjoy.

On Friday the team drew 0-0 with Sutton Valence from the UK, and on Saturday, although Justin Croxton scored for the College, Pearson were able to pull 2 goals back late in the match to clinch a 2-1 victory.

St Andrews' produced some excellent performances on the hockey field against Selborne College, particularly at U14 and open level. The U14C played attractive hockey to win comfortably, while the U14A were very unlucky not to have won. They had the better of the game but could not 'put away' their chances. Unfortunately, College were outplayed at U16 level, but the 2nds and the 1sts produced excellent performances and ultimately, very pleasing results. The 2nds dominated the 2nd half after being a goal behind, and had 2 chances to win the match in the last 5 minutes.
The 1st XI played another disciplined defensive game to compete with a skilful and well-drilled Selborne team. Paul Selwyn-Smith converted a penalty stroke to deservedly put College 1-0 up in the first half, but Selborne came back and controlled the 2nd half, also converting a penalty stroke. With less than a minute remaining, James Briscoe made a strong run and crossed for Justin Croxton to deflect the ball into the net to give College a victory with the final play of the game.

1st XI played a superbly disciplined game against a strong and talented Grey side on Saturday. Grey enjoyed much of possession early in the match, but the hard-working mid-field, in particular Matthew Ferreira and Paul Selwyn-Smith, gave the skilful Grey players few chances. The St Andrews' defence, led by the strong tackling of Brian Rushmere, and the composure of Greg King  was solid and frustrated the Grey forwards for much of the 1st half. As the game progressed the College side enjoyed more possession and a few opportunities were created. Charlie Bowren came close in the 2nd half, but ultimately Grey's ability to control the game and led to sustained pressure on the College defence, and they converted a penalty corner with two minutes to go, thereby winning the match 1-0.

Hockey results vs Victoria Park 22 May:
1sts drew 2-2
2nds won 5-1
U16A won 1-0
U14A won 5-0
The 1st XI had the better of the first five minutes, but having failed to score from a number of opportunities, Victoria Park's hard running strikers soon put the College defence under pressure.  This resulted in Victoria Park scoring from their first shot at goal after 12 minutes. The visitors had their confidence boosted by this and they took control of the game, and the College side struggled to get any momentum. A more determined approach as well as a few positional changes saw an improved College performance in the 2nd half, but they still struggled to contain a skilful opposition. College equalised through Alex Siddle. The elation of the team was short-lived as Victoria Park struck back immediately, and St Andrews' were left with 10 minutes to salvage a result. This they did after James Briscoe, who had worked exceptionally well in the second half, fired a shot which was deflected into the goal with a couple of minutes of the match left. Final result 2-2.

Congratulations to Greg King and Matthew Ferreira who have been awarded their 1st Team jerseys.

Congratulations to the following players who have been selected to represent Eastern Province in the Interprovincial tournaments in June:

The 1st XI had to draw on courage, hard work and the brilliance of Wayde Guedes in goal to beat a hard-running Queens College 1st XI on Friday. After starting well, St Andrews' began to lose possession in critical areas of the field and therefore put themselves under pressure. St Andrews' goal came from some good work by Paul Selwyn-Smith and James Briscoe who found Justin Croxton in front of an open goal. Queens fought back to create a number of chances, but the defence, and in particular, Wayde Guedes thwarted these attacks to end up 1-0 victor's in a tense encounter.

St Andrews' v Graeme College:
A cool night at Webster began with Old Andrean and former SA junior Springbok Ant Cato handing out the 1st XI tops, and James Briscoe being awarded his 50th cap for the 1st XI.St Andrews' began the match well, with Charlie Bowren, in particular, showing a high level of skill and energy. The Graeme defence was composed and thwarted most of the attacks until James Briscoe showed good skill to round the keeper for James Price to finish, giving St Andrews' a 1-0 half time lead. In the second half Matt Frew, Paul Selwyn-Smith and Brian Rushmere began to control the possession and provided the St Andrews' strikers with a number of half chances. That they were unable to add to the 1-0 lead was due to some superb keeping. After some good work by Paul Selwyn-Smith, Justin Croxton hit the cross bar. Continued pressure in the Graeme goal-area led to James Price finding the net after wrong -footing the keeper. Price netted his third goal with a superb short corner strike. James Briscoe again showed good composure to net from close range to complete a 4-0 victory for St Andrews'.

The 1st XI started well by creating a number of chances against Alexander Road, whose goalkeeper showed composure and made some very good saves. St Andrews' began to dominate the midfield, with Brian Rushmere proving to be a dominant force both on attack and defence. James Price, in his first game in the 1st XI after a 3 year absence opened the scoring with a penalty corner strike, but it was not until well into the second half, when Justin Croxton scored after a some fine work by Alex Siddle, before St Andrews' were able to seal the victory.

The 1st XI had a great start to the match against Cambridge on Friday, with Charlie Bowren scoring in the first minute of the match, after some good work by Justin  Croxton.  For the remainder of the first half the two sides were embroiled in a midfield battle, with St Andrews' having slightly the better of the exchanges. Paul Selwyn Smith and Matthew Frew, in particular worked well and created space for the strikers. The defence marked tightly and gave Cambridge few chances to penetrate. In the second half James Briscoe gave a terrific through ball to Justin Croxton who finished well putting St Andrews' 2-0 up. Cambridge came back strongly, but a secure defenc e and some excellent goalkeeping from Wayde Guedes meant that St Andrews were able to come away with a victory.

The 1st XI completed a successful season with a win against Dale on Friday evening. The first half saw St Andrews dominate the match in wet and cold conditions. The pace and control of the midfield gave the forwards a number of scoring opportunities which finally led to a goal after some good work by James Briscoe and Philip Selwyn-Smith. This was followed up by a converted short-corner and a further goal just before half time. Although St Andrews dominated the early exchanges of the 2nd half they could not add to their tally of goals, and a break away goal by Dale brought them back into the game. Dale adapted the wet conditions far better in the second half and their basics and skills saw them pull another goal back. Both goalkeepers made some terrific saves to keep the strikers at bay although St Andrews finished strongly and ended up deserved winners, 3-2.

1st XI Vs Victoria Park 25 July:
The match was a good, hard-fought encounter with both sides evenly matched. We unfortunately allowed their top player too much room in the first half and he managed to weave his way through our defense and this resulted in a goal. Our second half was more successful, however, and we came back strongly, scoring twice to win the game 2-1.

1st XI vs Oakhill (Knysna) 25 July:
Oakhill, on an Eastern Cape tour, proved tricky to play against in the first half. They tended to move all play into the middle channel and put all 11 players behind the ball in defense. Because of the congestion around the circle and in the 25 we only managed to score once. In the second half we changed strategy and moved the ball around the back and attacked down the flanks. This spread their players and we managed to score five excellent goals. Special mention must be made of our strikers who performed extremely well throughout the weekend. James Briscoe in particular was impressive.

Paul Selwyn-Smith has been selected to the EP U16 squad to play in the National Interprovincial Tournament in Pothcefstroom in July.

1st XI match report

In front of a festive crowd at Webster on Wednesday evening St Andrews’ beat Kingswood 2-1 in a hard fought and entertaining match. Kingswood dominated the early exchanges as they threw a series of overheads onto the St Andrews’ defenders. One of which got behind the defence and was well received by Johny Hale, who from an acute angle hammered the ball past Wayde Geudes in the St Andrews’ goal to put Kingswood up 1-0. A controlled half court press by Kingswood saw St Andrews’ enjoy more possession and slowly got themselves back into the game, however they found opportunities hard to come by. A minute before half time, an early ball from Greg Were to Graeme Renard exposed the Kingswood left leading to a free hit outside the circle which was quickly taken by Paul Hofman who displayed some terrific skill to beat a number of defenders and the Kingswood keeper, giving St Andrew’s the equaliser on half time.

The second half saw St Andrews enjoy more possession and were able to control much of the game. Constant pressure on the Kingswood defence led to a series of short corners, one of which was converted by Paul Hofman. With the excited crowd encouraging both teams, the last 10 minutes saw the game race from end to end as Kingswood desperately tried to pull a goal back, with St Andrew’s equally determined to hold on to their lead.

The 1st XI had one of their toughest matches of the season against Selborne who were a hard-running and skilful team. St Andrews’ started well and competed in all phases but just could not create clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities. Before half-time, Selborne were able to break away with numbers and score to lead 1-0 at the break. The 2nd half became a hard-fought mid-field battle with both sides competing for possession and control. Selborne took one of their few chances on offer to extend their lead to 2-0. St Andrews’ continued to press and the hard work finally paid off when James Briscoe scored an excellent goal. Selborne converted a penalty stroke on full time to win 3-1.

First XI Report
The 1st XI had their toughest challenge of the season on Saturday. St Andrew’s began well and dominated the early exchanges. Unfortunately, College were not able to convert any early chances, and Grey got themselves back into the game and were awarded a number of short corners, from which they scored. Consistent pressure by the Grey forwards led to a second goal before half time. Despite being behind, St Andrews’ dominated possession in the early stages of the second half but were unable to create clear goal scoring opportunities. The Grey strikers were fast and skilful and pressure on the College defence led to a further goal. Although St Andrew’s went close on a few occasions, they were unable to score from the half chances which they were given. A short corner goal by James Briscoe and field goal by Anthony Everard kept St Andrews’ in the game, but in the end the pace and finishing skill of the Grey side meant a deserved victory for them. Final score 6-2.

1st XI Report v Cambridge:
The 1st XI had a hard- fought victory against a competitive and fast-running Cambridge team on Frday afternoon on Webster. After Cambridge missed a few opportunities early in the match, St Andrews' slowly began to dominate the midfield and thereby enjoyed possession and territorial advantage. Despite this the teams went into the break 0-0. An early second half goal by Mark Theuma after some terrific work by Paul Hofman gave St Andrews' a little breathing space, however, Cambridge were dangerous on the counter-attack,a dn 1-0 was not enough to ensure victory. Two excellent first time deflections by Philip Selwyn-Smith put the match beyond Cambridge, and a final goal on full time by James Briscoe, after some excellent work by Tom Niven and Nathan Reitzer, gave St Andrews' a 4-0 victory.

Hockey results for the  week of the 4th of May are as follows:
1st XI vs Graeme          1-1
3rds vs Daniel Pienaar    3-3
3rds vs Graeme 2nds     0-0
1st XI vs Alex               4-1
U16 A vs Alex               7-0
U16 B vs Alex               1-1
U14 A vs Alex               1-0

The 1st XI played against Graeme 1st XI on Webster, in a match which saw St Andrews' on the attack for most of the match. Unfortunately, St Andrews could only convert one of their number of chances. With the last short corner of the match Graeme managed to equalise.

The St Andrews' 1st XI faired much better against Alexander Road on Saturday morning when Nathan Reitzer scored a wel-placed deflection in the first minute to put Alex under huge pressure. St Andrews dominated and played attractive attacking hockey scoring 2 more goals before half time. The 2nd half saw a far more open encounter, but St Andrews continued to control the game. Paul Hofman scored a short corner goal before Alexander Road pulled a goal back before the final whistle. Final score St Andrews' won 4 -1.

Easter Holiday Hockey report:
The 1st XI participated in the St Stithians' Easter Festival, and although they only won one match out of 5, 3-0 against Falcon College, the improvement in the performance of this young and inexperienced side was a pleasure to witness. The work-rate and commitment of the team was of a high standard.  In the final match of the festival against St Stithians', St Andrews' lost 1-0 but certainly had the better of the game.
Both the U16A and the 1st XI participated in the Independent Schools Hockey Festival in Grahamstown, in which St Andrews' hosted 10 schools from across the country.
The 1st XI had a good start to the festival beating St Andrews' from Bloemfontein 3-2, but after this the opposition proved to be tough. The matches against Michaelhouse and York were tightly contested with College losing 1-0 on both occasions, however, both St Albans and St Davids' outplayed us and we were lucky to escape with 2-0 defeats on both of these occasions.
The learning curve for the young team has been huge, and we cannot under-estimate the value of playing tough opposition so early in the season.
The U16A side, a young team that had not played much together, came up against some strong opposition.  They pushed some of these teams to the final whistle but did not manage to come away with a win.  The most notable performances were against the strong St Albans and St Davids sides which they lost 1-3 and 0-1 respectively. The U16A side a gained a great deal from the tournament.
My thanks to the vast number of people who helped organise the festival, and to all those staff and students who supported the teams at the festival.
