Mountain Biking - The Bathurst Bundu Bash 5 April:

13 College boys took part in the Bathurst Bundu Bash on Sunday. The course was extremely tough and made the hardest stage of the Fish River Journey seem like a Sunday School picnic ride. The course was very technical with rocky descents and climbs, beautiful riverine single track and sandy stretches as well. To make things more difficult, the temperature was close to 40º C, and dehydration became a very real problem.
Four Grade 10s and two Grade 9s took part in the 20km race. Usually this is a family fun-ride distance. At Bathurst this followed the same route as the longer distances. Luke and Daniel Boshoff were the first College boys in coming joint third.
Four Grade 11s and one Grade 12 took part in the grueling 40km ride. There were a number of mechanical failures as well as punctures. The two Hobson brothers continued with the family theme by coming in together.
Craig Mullins was the only one brave (or crazy) enough to attempt the 60km ride. Unfortunately, he suffered a number of punctures, but still made it to the end. Mr Wright came second overall in the Elite Men's division after also having punctured en route.
There were some vital lessons learnt in this exercise, firstly, that it is not to be taken lightly and regular training is necessary; secondly, that nutrition and hydration play vital roles in the success of your activity. Hopefully this will be the first of many such rides.

The Herald Cycle Tour took place in Port Elizabeth on Sunday 1st February. Superb early morning conditions greeted the 1200 riders as they departed on the 105km journey through some of the most beautiful routes of around the city.   Craig Mullins achieved an impressive performance in under 3 hours.   Simon Harvey completed the course on a tandem with his father in a time of 3h49.   Richard Simpson who was the only under 14 rider on the day averaged over 30 km/h to achieve an impressive time of 3h28.   Chris Webb crossed the finish line in a time of 3h36.   Mr Maffessanti also arrived back safely.  Mr Boshoff participated in the gruelling Herald Addo mountain bike tour the previous day. He was just beaten across the line by Mr Wright of DSG.
