2011:

Updated CEMA Awards List as of October 2011

The annual SAC House play competition was completed before Balloon Week.
The feedback from the judges was that caution should be taken with too many "in-jokes" and that there is a difference between "silly" and "funny". Merriman walked away with all the individual prizes but due to the slow pace of their production, lost the cup to Upper. Well done to the directors and to all involved. A special thank you must go to Jared Hohne, Jethro Bradford and MJ Rosslee for their skilled management of the technical aspects of the evening.
The final results are: 6 Armstrong, 5 Graham, 4 Mullins, 3 Espin, 2 Merriman, 1 Upper.
Best Supporting Actor: Lonwabo Nyhonyha (Merriman)
Best Actor: David Mpore (Merriman)
Best Script and Best Director: Ntsikelelo Mlamleli

Well done to all the houses for the time and effort that they have put into the House plays this year. It was a close call between the top 4 houses. Thank you to MJ Rosslee and Jethro Bradford who handled the technical aspects for the week and to Mr Haarkenson and his team for setting up the Drill Hall for the events.

CITATION FOR AN HONOURS AWARD FOR PIPE BAND
AD de Blocq van Scheltinga (Pipe Major)

Andrew began learning the pipes during his first year at College. From the beginning he displayed the drive and determination that has characterized his contribution ever since, and he learnt quickly as a result, forging ahead of others who began at the same time. (He is in fact the first piper for many years to make his way into the band in less than a year.) He was soon a reliable piper, learning the required tunes quickly. He has now developed an extensive repertoire, far in excess of the requirements for Colours level. He has been Pipe Major for the last two years, and was awarded Colours in 2008. Unfortunately changes made to the competition calendar by the Pipe Bands Association of Southern Africa have made it very difficult for College boys to compete, either as a band, or individually. Andrew's competitive experience, compared to that of his peers, has been severely limited, yet he has made a great effort to compete wherever this has been possible. His first experience was in the Western Cape Highland Gathering, in 2007. He played in the novice section, and was placed 3rd in the Novice March, and 1st in the Slow March, the Piobaireachd (pronounced: peebrog guttural 'g'), and the Strathspey and Reel. In 2008 he was able to play in the Junior Hundred Guineas, where he achieved a 4th place in the Piobaireachd (the classical music of the bagpipe). Later that year Andrew competed in the South Coast Highland Gathering, where again he featured in the prize lists. In 2008 Andrew also travelled to Scotland where he took part in a number of small Highland Games, with some success. In 2009 he competed in the Sandy Mallen Memorial event, which attracts most of the best players in the country. Here he came second overall, and in the process was placed ahead of the competitor who went on to win the Junior Hundred Guineas a couple of weeks later. On Saturday Andrew competed in the George Ackroyd Memorial Gathering where he was placed first in the Piobaireachd. Thus, while his competitive experience is somewhat limited, he has been successful virtually every time he has competed, and has been up against players with far more experience, who compete regularly-perhaps 10 times a year. As a driving force in the band Andrew is impressive. His quiet enthusiasm is infectious, and he has been a great motivating force the last two years. He has undoubtedly been one of the best Pipe Majors we have had over the last 35 years. He leads by example, and has done a great deal of behind the scenes work. For example at the end of last year he was given a list of over 50 possible tunes for the band's repertoire this year. He spent many hours during the holiday going through these, in many cases actually learning the tunes, before making recommendations. Pipe Band Honours have been awarded only twice before. The first recipient, Thomas Fuller, now leads one of the top pipe bands in the country, and has won many of the top senior solo events. David Springer, the second recipient, has also continued to make his mark, both as a bandsman and as a solo competitor. There is no doubt that Andrew will similarly continue to bring credit to the school in the future, and will continue to make his mark in piping circles.

CITATION:  HONOURS:  MUSIC
When Timothy Abel arrived at St Andrew's College he was already a promising musician, playing two instruments at a level that was higher than usual for his age.Since then Timothy has developed his skills as a pianist so that he is currently the best pianist that College has had for more than a decade.  Timothy has played two Grade 8 examinations (the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and UNISA) and has just achieved a distinction in the UNISA examination.  He was a finalist in both the 2008 "Rising Stars" Music Competition and the 2009 "Grahamstown Music Competition".  He won a special prize for his playing of Debussy in 2008 and this year has been chosen to play a movement of a concerto with the Rhodes University Orchestra.  Next week he will play a recital during Arts Week.Timothy started his career in the school orchestra as a violinist, but quickly converted to the viola.  He passed his Grade 7 examination last year and plans to study the instrument seriously next year at Rhodes University.  He has been a member of the Senior Orchestra for nearly 5 years and the Head of Senior Orchestra for 2009.  He has also played from time to time in the Rhodes University Orchestra.  As both pianist and violist, Timothy has been a regular performer at concerts, both at school and elsewhere.  He has twice been chosen as a participant in the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra Youth Orchestra course. In addition, Timothy plays the bagpipes and is a member of the Pipe Band.  He is also more than competent as a singer and has sung bass in the Chamber Choir for the best part of two years.  Here his help with part practices has been invaluable.Timothy has not confined his musicianship to the practical but prepared for and wrote his Grade 6 Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music theory examination last year. He is currently preparing to write the Unisa Grade 6 theory paper in October.  Both these examinations are over and above anything required for the Matric Music course.Timothy is a musician of stature who has made the most of his opportunities to develop a considerable talent.  In spite of his numerous successes he remains grounded and unassuming.  He commands respect amongst his peers within the music department and has been an exemplary leader in the orchestra.  In my opinion we have only seen the tip of the iceberg and I have no doubt that Timothy will continue to amaze and delight us.It is a privilege and a pleasure to nominate Timothy for the Honours Award for Music.

CITATION FOR HONOURS AWARD FOR SERVICE 28 September 2010: RICHARD WILSON
Richard Wilson has made a tremendous contribution to culture at College, participating, performing, organizing and helping at most cultural events, very often behind the scenes.  He has managed to balance a very full extramural load with exceptional academic results, and has always been willing to take on extra tasks, which he completes without fuss and with great care.
Richard has achieved no less than five CEMA Colours Awards, including Colours for Service last year.  He was awarded Colours for Exploration for his service and commitment to SCUBA diving.  He has completed his Open Water 1 and Rescue Dive courses, and has also assisted with running SCUBA diving courses.
Richard was awarded Colours for Debating in his Grade 10 year.  He has represented the school in Inter-School debates, Provincial Championships and at the African Schools' Debating Championships on two occasions.  He has also helped with junior training for three years and served as Chairman of the Debating Committee this year.
He was awarded Colours for Drama last year for his contribution to dance and drama, having performed in six school productions, as well as dancing in Instep, for Speech Day and at every other opportunity he is given! In the last two years, he has assisted with choreography and with the technical aspects of productions, from lighting to videoing. Richard has been the Champion of Dance at College.  He also directed the Upper House play in 2009, as well as their Inter-House Music in 2009 and 2010.
Richard achieved the Gold Standard of the President's Award in Grade 11, and was Deputy Chairman of the President's Award Committee for two years.  He has continued to invest an extraordinary amount of personal energy and expertise in a diverse range of fundraising projects such as G'Town Spunk and the Clock Tower Climbing Day.  He received the Colours Award for Community Engagement in recognition of his leadership and his contribution to service at College, and the broader Grahamstown community.
In addition to all this, Richard has participated in Ballroom Dancing, the Speakers' Society, Aurora, the Astronomers' Club, the Cornish Society, the Dance Committee, the Chiasmus Editorial and the D&T Club.  He has been on marketing trips and on exchange to Australia.  He organised the Freedom Day celebrations this year, Speakers' banquets, the 2010 John Axe Arts Week and has participated in Photography Competitions.  In the last two winter sports seasons, he made a significant contribution to the First Aid Club.  Richard has also promoted cultural activities in Upper House and has been the CEMA House representative for four years.
This year, Richard has been the Culture and Ceremonies Portfolio Prefect and his energy, creativity, enthusiasm and selfless service to every aspect of Culture and the Arts at St Andrew's College has been simply astonishing.  The College community invites Richard Wilson to receive the prestigious Honours Award for Service.
