OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Outdoor Education has had a long history at St Andrew’s College, probably starting after the Second World War, with week-long camps at the local airfield, run by Army instructors.
College’s 11th headmaster, Freddy Spencer Chapman, introduced a range of societies and placed great emphasis on outward-bound activities. The annual Long Walk and the multitude of weekend activities are vibrant reminders of his contribution to the school curriculum. He would be enormously proud of the newest tradition at College, the Fish River Journey, inaugurated in 2004. For almost three weeks the Grade 10s of College and DSG walk, cycle and canoe the 600 kilometres from source to sea, exploring not only the landscape and environment but also the historical crucible of this region, and the country’s cultural history.
