NEC ASPERA TERRENT . EMBRACING NEW FRONTIERS
Spiritual

Although we remain proud of our Anglican foundation, and remain a Christian school, St Andrew’s College accepts pupils of all faiths and denominations who are happy to attend worship in a Christian context.

The school worships together in the College Chapel, led by the school Chaplain. The Chaplain is the spiritual leader of the school and is available for counselling and guidance to pupils at all times. He discusses a range of spiritual, ethical and moral issues with our boys and services range from formal Eucharists to more relaxed prayer and sing-along sessions.   Pupils may be prepared for confirmation at the school.

The beautiful College Chapel has pride of place in the school grounds.  This stone building was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and was consecrated in June 1914.

Meet the Chaplain:

Rev Gary Griffith-Smith is the St Andrew's College Chaplain:

Greetings to you.  My name is Gary. I was born and raised in Port Elizabeth as one of six children.  I matriculated from Selborne College where I was a boarder and hostel/school prefect. I played cricket for the 1st X1 and the occasional rugby match for the 1st XV.

After matriculating I spent two years doing my compulsory military service and then became a sales rep. God is very persistent and eventually He persuaded me to train for the priesthood in the Anglican Church. After 12 years of parish ministry I was keen to do a stint as a chaplain in a boy’s boarding school. Being from the Eastern Cape meant that for me,  St Andrew's College would be the ‘first prize’.

I was thrilled when I was appointed to the post of Chaplain at this great school. I love my ‘job’ I have such a good time with the boys as I watch and coach sport, interact with them in the Houses and on the campus and of course in the classroom. Chapel is also very special.

I am grateful to God for this wonderful ministry opportunity, for my good health, my wife and four children, my friends and colleagues and for South Africa.

I consider it a privilege to be the Chaplain to your sons and grandsons and assure you that I will always seek to journey with them in a way that is beneficial and brings glory to God.

Many Blessings

Gary
