The St Andrew’s College Rowing Club was established in 1958 by Axel Ohlsson. Since then the club  has grown in size and influence. The club has its own fleet of boats, with excellent equipment and is one of the biggest clubs in the country, boasting a membership of over 70 boys. It is competitive in all age-groups country-wide. The team trains in the well-equipped gymnasium and the ergo room which has six Concept 2 ergometers and a Rowperfect ergometer.

Rowers benefit from the conveniently located Settlers’ Dam just 22 kilometres from the school. At the dam there is a fully equipped boathouse and clubhouse, which is used for overnight accommodation. The crews also train on the Kowie River at Port Alfred. This river is one of the best rowing venues in the world and is 60 kilometres from Grahamstown. The river is navigable for over 20 kilometres and is home to the SA Universities’ Boat Race and SA Schools’ Boat Race competition. The school has a good working relationship with Rhodes University’s Rowing Club and boats are shared for regattas. The St Andrew’s College Rowing Club continues to contribute to the national world of rowing, showing that great things can be achieved through commitment and hard work.
