Vouloir c'est pouvoir!
MISSION:
The goals of the French Department are for all students to learn French in a meaningful context; reach a high level of fluency; develop a lifelong love of the language; and discover the richness and diversity of the francophone world.
OVERVIEW:
French classes are conducted in French and English. Through the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, students develop their abilities in comprehension and production. Particular attention is paid to vocabulary acquisition, reading and listening comprehension, practice in communicating orally, and building writing skills. Pupils are encouraged and expected to participate orally on a regular basis.
We offer First (FAL) and Second (SAL) Additional language from grade 8 to grade 12.
All South African and non-immigrant pupils (i.e. arrived in South Africa before Grade 7) are required to do two official languages, one of which must be a language of Learning and Teaching.
In order to study French as a First Additional language, an applicant must have an approved Immigrant Status from the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).
A student with a non-immigrant status can study French as a Second Additional language (SAL) in Option 4. - A very popular option.
PLACEMENT
Student in grade 8 and 9 are not grouped by ability and they all start at the same level. Starting in grade 10, students are grouped into Regular or Advanced set classes according to their marks. Both groups cover the same basic content, but the Advanced classes differ in that they move at a quicker pace, and study is enriched through the reading of additional documents, with their accompanying, in-depth exploration of culture and language.
MATRICULATION EXAMINATION
The Matriculation Examination consists of two written papers and a portfolio complied during the year.
DELF:
Our pupils are offered the opportunity to write the DELF (diplôme d'études en langue française) exams. They are official exams recognized by the French Department of Education.
Each of the 4 exams corresponds to the 4 qualification levels in language defined by the European Council.

The DELF is the French equivalent of the English proficiency test TOEFL, but the tests for these two languages are quite different. The DELF certification consists of multiple levels. Rather than a score, DELF candidates work to obtain one of four certifications: DELF A1, A2, B1 and B2. Each of these certificates tests the four language proficiencies (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
In addition to allowing to opt out of a French university's language entrance exam, having the DELF is an additional advantage on a resume.
Last exams were in May 2009 and the next ones are planned for November 2009
TRAVEL AND EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES
There is usually a trip to France planned for Grade 11 and 12 students every second year. The purpose of these trips is to immerse students in the French language, giving them the opportunity to use their French in real and meaningful situations, as well as to explore and experience the francophone culture.
The next trip is planned for August 2010.
