Fish River Journey 2009

160 St.Andrew's Boys and DSG grade 10 girls, 25 adults, staff, medics, drivers, arrived safely at the mouth of the Fish River after 18 days of hiking, canoeing, cycling, running, as well as community service, activities (abseiling, ziplines) and orienteering.

They experienced extremes of heat, cold and wind, but none of these affected any of the activities. Camp ettiquette has improved dramatically and issues such as litter, tent set up and food queues were well organised and efficient.

Luckily there were no serious injuries and the medics had to mainly attend to the normal cases of blisters, thorns and sunburn. Obviously, they learnt the advantages of cleanliness and hygiene, and there were few stomach problems.

In certain aspects, this journey was more difficult as there were fewer rest days and a more continuous programme. This put the group leaders under severe pressure having to deal with group issues constantly 24 hrs a day for 18 days. This also took its toll on vehicles and equipment.

We hope that everyone learnt what their limitations were, and that it is possible to go beyond what is expected of oneself. There are wonderful stories of courage, and some disappointments, of enjoyment, fear, and togetherness, all memories that will not be forgotten. We also hope that there is a realisation that it is not what you have got that is important, but how much you appreciate what you have got. Those who prepared properly were able to get the most out of the Journey. Hopefully the present grade 9s will begin to realise that early in the new year.

Our sincere thanks must go to the staff, Mrs Scott for efficiently organising the logistics, food and equipment, Mr Alcock who spent many hours transporting goods to the various groups and looking after the Journey budget,  Mr Wright as 2 i/c and group leader, the group leaders - Mr Wright, Miss Seymour, Mr Frayne, Miss Taylor, Miss Stevenson, Mrs Cobbing and Mr Barnard, Mr MacKenzie and Miss Davies; Mr Andrew, Mr Eksteen and Mr Hobson joined in some events; the medics; and the College and DSG drivers. Mrs Snyman and Ms Potgieter who were instrumental in organising rest dat activities and community service

Thank you all for working tirelessly and unselfishly to make the John Jones Fish River Journey 2009 a success.
