DAY 9 - HALF WAY:
My goodness, time flies when you are having fun....
The groups are all over the place today and I will only catch up with them during the course of tomorrow.
Group 1 hiked from Waainek to Kommetjieshoek. It was a long (23km) and very hot hike and unfortunately there is not a lot of water in the river so they have been unable to enjoy the luxury of irrigation sprays on the land they are camping on tonight. They are all well despite being a little footsore. Tomorrow they hike to Olivewoods.
No report from Group 2 today...they are at Kriegerskraal and participated in their orienteering activity. Tomorrow is their official Rest Day and they will cook up a storm as part of the Potjie competition.
Group 3 had a long, hot and unfortunately dry canoe day today. The river is very low below Cookhouse and so the canoeing was hard work. Tonight they are at Schelmsdrift and they will also enjoy an official Rest Day tomorrow with a potjie competition.
Group 4 had a hot cycle ride but all arrived at Kriegerskraal in good spirits. Tomorrow they will ride to the Delports.
Day 10 - potjie comps and other activities:
Group 1 - Hike to Olivewoods:
Group 1 descended into Olivewoods yesterday afternoon after three incredibly tough days of walking. The sight of green grass and a real swimming pool was almost enough to bring tears to the eyes of the group. A total of 58km which paled in comparison to the heights that were ascended and descended resulting in a couple of group lows which were quickly lifted by the group 'gems'. Blisters were quickly forgotten as tales of the previous days task escalated. A much needed rest day will be welcome relief.
Group 2 - Rest day at Kriegerskraal:|
WOW - hot but real fun day. The group was divided in two and each sub group made a chicken potjie and a choc pudding in a pot. Christa Snyman ran the whole day and the kids loved the activity as well as the meal.Tomorrow this group starts their three day hike and it looks as though the weather is going to be very hot.
Group 3 - Rest Day at Schelmsdrift:
The wind was blowing at Schelmsdrift so although Group 3 were also having fun making potjies and puddings, the day wasn't as chilled. Food was good though and there was plenty. Tomorrow Group 3 are at Helspoort where they have a full day of activities.
Group 4 - Cycle to the Delports:
This was a long hard day of cycling, but all managed and the group enjoyed stir fry chicken for supper. Tomorrow they cycle to Schelmsdrift where they will spend two nights.
