Taberer Scholarship
When St Andrew’s College was founded in 1855, part of the vision of the school was to provide education and training for African boys. A separate class was established, out of which grew an independent institute which was housed in what is today Graham House. Early in the 1900s this Institute was moved to St Matthew’s mission near Keiskammahoek, where it developed eventually into the St Matthew’s High School of today.
Together with their counterparts at St Matthew’s, David Wylde and Tim Nuttall have initiated a partnership programme between the two institutions. Staff and pupil exchanges and interaction between the two schools have already begun.
The College co-ordinator is Tim Barnard. The late Tony Taberer (Old Andrean), whose family has strong historical links with St Matthew’s, has generously endowed money for scholarships that will enable boys from the St Matthew’s community to study at St Andrew’s College. The first two Taberer scholars were selected for 2004.
