CLUBS AND SOCIETIES 2012:
Eastern Province Debating Championships May 2012:
This past weekend saw five College debaters take part in the annual Eastern Province debating Championships held at Queen’s College from Friday until Sunday.
23 teams took part in the competition, the College team being one of the youngest in attendance. James Holmes, Finn Worrall, Nicholas Wilkinson, Jonathan Jayes and James Stoddart gave an excellent account of themselves winning three out of their four debates in the qualifying rounds, beating Collegiate, Kingsridge and Port Alfred High School. Their only loss came at the hands of a very strong Hudson Park team, and this by the smallest of margins, as the two teams were very equally matched. It was also a rematch of the final that our debaters won at last year’s tournament held here at College.
Even though the College team were lying joint-third at the end of the qualifying rounds, they lost out on going through to the semi-finals by only three speaker points, being beaten to it by Collegiate, whom they had beaten in Round 1. The College boys, the oldest of them only being in Grade 10, ended the competition in 5th place. Collegiate went on to beat Hudson Park A in the semi-final and Holy Cross in the final debate to win the competition.
Although we were disappointed not to break into the semis, the team was richly rewarded by the announcement that James Holmes and Nicholas Wilkinson have been selected to represent the Eastern Province at the South African National Debating Championships to be hosted by St Andrew’s College in December this year. We congratulate all the boys who took part in the competition and we wish the boys selected to the provincial team everything of the best for the next round; the prize being selection to the national team. C. Cuyler

Debating:
On Tuesday, 14 February, a College Debating team consisting of James Holmes, James Scott and Nicholas Wilkinson were challeged to a Valentine's Day debate. The College team proposed the motion "This house believes that feminist groups should seek a ban on pornography".Both teams acquitted themselves well and engaged with the topic in a very mature manner. It was a close debate but the the College team won owing to good structure and a solid strategy. Well done boys.

Debating:
On Friday 3rd of February, 2 College debating teams clashed with Kingswood over the issues of banning boxing and the medium of instruction in schools. Although all 6 debaters were rusty after a long break, both teams managed to win their debates with relative ease. Congratulations to the juniors: James Stoddart, Uli Ratsibe and Kamagelo Kekana, and to the seniors: James Holmes, Finn Worrall and Jack Ryan, on a job well done!

Rhini League Debating: Junior Final:
On Friday, 23 September, the unbeaten St Andrew's Junior Debaters made their way to Rhodes University to face the final obstacle on their road to becoming the Rhini League Champions for 2011.
They came up against a vastly-improved Victoria Girls' School squad who have made an incredible impression this year. But the College team consisting of uber debaters, James Holmes, Finn Worrall and Erin Trudgeon were undaunted to the end and managed to outwit, out-manoeuvre and ultimately defeat their esteemed rivals from up the road, making them the deserved inaugural winners of the title "Rhini League Debating Champions"!
We congratulate them on what has been an exceptional few months of superb skill and consistent effort. You have done us proud boys!
We also take this opportunity to wish James Holmes everything of the best as he represents Eastern Province and College at the National Debating Competition to be held in Bloemfontein beginning on Sunday. Good luck!

Nicholas Greeff has only been riding for 4 years, and he has been selected to represent his province (for the 3rd time) at the Nationals in Johannesburg. Nicholas and his pony phoenix have only been together for a year and a half and at the Interschools local chapter, Nicholas received the silver medal for the best horse and rider combination and a gold medal for getting the most points collected.
On Friday 17 June composite junior and senior SAC/DSG debating teams took on Kingswood on the proposed National Health system in South Africa and possible solution to the Libyan Crisis.
The Senior team was narrowly defeated with William Cahill named as Best Speaker an dteh Juniors were comprehensive winners with James Holmes justifying his provisional selection with a "debate-defying" reply speech.
The Tuna Classic May 2011:
Six College boys took part in the annual Algoa Bay Tuna Classic, in Port Elizabeth, one of the major fishing tournaments on the Eastern Cape Deep Sea Angling calendar. The tournament takes place over four days, with the biggest tuna taking all the spoils at the end of day 4. Unfortunately, however, the first 2 days were called off with rough sea swells in excess of 3 meters, and plenty of rain.
Friday, however, saw the crew head out to a calmer sea, some 30 miles offshore, in search of yellowfin tuna which patrol the outskirts of the warm Mozambique current. It wasn't long before the reels started singing! Plenty of Bonito were caught by all, but by the end of the day no yellowfin tuna were landed by the College fishermen. In fact only 5 yellowfin tuna were landed by some 30 odd ski boats on the first day's fishing - the biggest being just over 20kg, not big at all for this species.
And so we were down to the last day, and once again the weather was against us. Many crews stayed put in the harbour, but being on one of the largest boats, we were able to head out, knowing that the chances were good that we could pick up the winning prize. After landing a few more Bonito, the wind picked up dramatically in no time and we took the "safety first" option of heading for home. Like a scene from Deadliest Catch, we limped home in rough seas, with plenty of chop, spray and resulting pale faced crew members. Not a good day at the office for any of the competitors, in fact, only an additional 2 yellowfin were landed. The winning tuna weighed only 23kg.
But what a fantastic experience it was for all, surely one that very few boys get to experience. Many thanks must go to Mr Tim Fleischer for, once again, opening up his wonderful home for all to enjoy, as well as for skippering his amazing boat in what was challenging weather to say the least. Thanks also to Dave Vogel (our friendly rod master) for ensuring we had order at the back of the boat with very few tangled lines! Compliments, also to the boys, for being such great ambassadors for their school at all times! Don Cech
Debating vs DSG:
On Monday, 28 March Litha Bakumeni, Will Cahill and Xan Atkins debated against a very spirited and aggressive DSG team. The motion was "This house believes that the Fifa Football World Cup was good for South Africa". College opposed the motion.
The DSG Debaters set up the debate very vaguely and a muddy clash ensued. Our third speaker, Will Cahill, managed to bring clarity to the College argument and this went a long way to ensure that we walked away with a narrow win. Well done to these boys on a fine effort.

Debating:
On Monday 14 February, College debaters were invited to attend a Valentine's debate against the newly reformed DSG debating Society. The topic was This House would lower the rate of income tax for women. Although the debate was poorly attended by the St Andrew's debating society, Myles Crossland, James Holmes and Smiley Van Oldenborgh ran out convincing winners over an impassioned opposition. Congratulations to them all.
This past weekend, 12 February, Nicholas Greeff took part in the SANEF Horse Riding Competition held here in Grahamstown. He took part in five disciplines. He won a 1st place in Showing, 1st place for Equitation, 2nd place in Performance Riding and 3rd place in the Jumping competition.

Debating:
On Saturday 23 October 16 junior teams from around the Eastern Cape descended on St Andrew's for the Provincial Championships. After the 3 preliminary rounds, College "A" found themselves at the top of the leader board and preparing to battle Stirling in the final. Gibbs, Crossland and Holmes battled valiantly and defeated the older, more experienced Stirling side with a 4-1 split decision. This means that for the first time in a number of years, St Andrew's is both the senior and junior Eastern Cape debating Champions. Congratulations to all 9 boys who participated and a special word of congratulations to JAMES HOLMES and NICHOLAS WILKINSON who have been selected to represent the Eastern Cape at the National competition in December. D. Molony & C. Cuyler
Debating 28 September 2010:
The following boys have been selected to represent the Eastern Cape at the World School's Debating Nationals in KwaZulu-Natal in December:
William Cahill, Richard Wilson, Declan Williamson, Xan Atkins
Debating:
Eight St Andrew’s College boys along with 70 other top debaters attended the Eastern Cape Provincial tournament hosted by Graeme College this weekend.
After the preliminary 4 rounds the two St Andrew’s teams were neck and neck, both having won 4 out of their 4 debates; with the St Andrew's B team of Jonty Arnot, Osa Mazwai, Litha Bakumeni and Charles Price-Smith breaking 1st in the Semis, and the St Andrew's A team of Richard Wilson, William Cahill, Xan Atkins and Declan Williamson a close 2nd.
Both teams were up against difficult opposition in the knockout with the 'B's losing out narrowly to a very strong Clarendon A side and the 'A's winning against an aggressive Queens College A.
The hotly contested final between St Andrew’s College and Clarendon was won by the St Andrew’s team, crowning them undisputed provincial champions for 2010!
Litha Bakumeni, Declan Williamson, Xan Atkins, William Cahill and Richard Wilson were all placed as top 10 speakers in the Eastern Cape.
Well done to all the debaters on a remarkable achievement.
Three debaters represented College at the recent African Schools' Debating Championships hosted at St John's College in Johannesburg from 21 - 28 August. They were Richard Wilson, Declan Williamson and Litha Bakumeni. Some of the schools represented were: St John's College, St Stithian's, St Peter's, Rodean, Pretoria Girls' High School, Westerford, Bishops, Rondebosch and Rustenburg High School from Cape Town.
Although our debaters only won three out of six of their debates in Round 1, they still managed to come 11th out of the 24 schools teams represented at the Championships. These three boys did College proud in the way they carried themselves and received many compliments on their manners and their gentlemanly conduct.
They were also very privileged to be addressed by, among others, Thabo Mbeki, Deputy-chief Justice Dikgang Mosoneke, FNB CEO Dr Michael Jordaan and political analyst, Eusebius McKaiser. These well-known speakers were exceptionally insightful and gave our boys the opportunity to be exposed to people who work on the front-line of determining South Africa's future.
All-in-all this was a very good experience for these debaters and they have gained a wealth of experience which will stand them in good stead in the future.

Debating v Grey:
On Friday 28 May afternoon 2 senior and 2 junior teams travelled to PE to take on Grey in the first debates between our two schools in 5 years.
While the juniors struggled against an older and more experienced side, both senior teams won their debates convincingly.
Congratulations to all the debaters and our thanks to Mr Cuyler for travelling with the boys.
Junior Interhouse Debating 26 May:
After a closely fought competition, the final between Graham and Merriman was contested last Wednesday evening in front of a full house in AV Major. Graham emerged victorious with James Holmes being awarded best speaker. _328x246.jpg)
CHESS 14 May 2010:
Six chess games were played against Queens. With some of our top players missing, Queens capitalised on this and put us on the back foot in 4 of the 6 games. Two of the six games were very closely contested, with College eventualy losing all six games.
Debating v Queens 14 May 2010:
On Friday afternoon, before running in Cross-country and playing hockey, 12 College debaters took on Queens on the topics of compulsory drug testing and Conscription in SA. Despite some of the boys having not debated this year due to sporting commitments, College won both the junior and both the senior debates. Congratulations to all the debaters and our thanks to Mr Cuyler for facilitating this event.
Clare McIntyre Debating Day :
On Sunday16 May 2010, 20 teams from around the Eastern Cape, converged on St Andrew's to develop their debating skills as well as debate against opposition they would normally not encounter; and to show appreciation for the enormous contribution Ms Clare McIntyre made to debating at College, and indeed in South Africa. The focus was not on winning but in returning the Eastern Cape to a debating force to be reckoned with. Thank you to all the volunteers, debaters and members of the debating committee as well as Mr Cuyler and Mr Clive Eley for their invaluable contribution.
Debating:
Richard Wilson, Michael Wilkinson, Declan Williamson, Xan Atkins, Nicholas Wilkinson, James Holmes and Finn Worrall took part in the Alex Road debating festival on Saturday 13 March. We mixed the juniors with the seniors to allow them to gain valuable experience from the seasoned debaters; despite this, College debaters were awarded "best speaker" in all four of their debates with Richard Wilson receiving 2 awards.

DEBATING:
Friday 9 October evening saw Merriman's five-year domination of the Senior Inter-house Debating Competition come to an end as Upper and Armstrong competed for the top spot in a closely contested final. Decked out in colourful waistcoats, the Upper trio passionately argued that fast-food companies should be held responsible for detrimental health effects on customers, while Armstrong argued that this was neither feasible nor just, and asserted that the responsibility lay with the consumer. The external adjudicator was swayed by the opposition's arguments and awarded the debate to Armstrong. Congratulations and thanks to all participants for a lively and entertaining final.
Interhouse Debating:
After six preliminary rounds, the debating teams of Upper and Merriman met to contest the Junior Debating Inter-House Finals on Friday evening, arguing for and against the use of metal detectors in South African high schools. The debate was lively and entertaining (some credit for this must go to the extremely biased Chair, Khanyisa Jamjam!) and although Upper were the best-dressed on the night, the debate was justly awarded to Merriman. Congratulations to all the juniors from all houses for their enthusiastic participation over the past three weeks which made the event worthwhile and revealed plenty of future talent, and special congratulations to Merriman!
Debating: Provincial Debating Champs: September 2009:
Dexter Munnik, Jono de Vrye, Justin Swart, Jonty Arnot and Richard Wilson represented College and fared impressively in the prelim rounds, winning all their debates. Their winning streak came to an abrupt end when they were knocked out in the semi-finals by Stirling who went on to win the championships.
With over 120 individual speakers participating, having 3 College boys in the Top Ten Speaker Rankings (Justin Swart earning 2nd place) was a pleasing achievement, unmatched by other teams.
In additions, congratulations must go to Justin Swart and Jonty Arnot who have been selected for the provincial A-side, with Jono de Vrye as reserve, to contest the national competition in December.
DEBATING
During the August holidays, Craig Mullins and CJ Chandler, together with their team-mates from Nombulelo, competed in the provincial Model United Nations Competition. They represented India and dealt with the issue of the global financial crisis from the perspective of that country. The team performed impressively and were justly awarded 2nd place. In addition, on the strength of their performance, the team was selected to attend a leadership 'Spring School' programme - this will take place later this month and involves spending a week on Robben Island! Well done to these boys!
Honours Citation: Dexter Munnik
Dexter's speaking talent was apparent from the moment of his arrival as a New Boy. As a consequence, he is the only St Andrew's scholar in the history of College Debating to have been selected to represent the province (at a senior level) every year since his first provincial championship in Grade 8. This is a remarkable achievement as he was competing for selection against seniors from schools around the province.
Dexter has been a prominent Debating Society member throughout his time at College. He has been willing to take part in any internal event on offer (Inter-House debates, leagues and weekly debates) and has been eager to give his time to coach others. He has represented the school on countless occasions at various festivals and tournaments, and is well known in debating circles around the country for his eloquence and formidable powers of persuasion.
For two consecutive years, Dexter represented College at the African Schools Debating Championships, perhaps the most prestigious event on the South African debating calendar, and in 2009 was placed as the third-ranked speaker at this event which is a most impressive achievement.
As a member of the St Andrew's Model United Nations team which won the provincial competition, Dexter went on to compete at the national finals. As a result of his performance at this event, he was selected to represent South Africa at the Cornell Model United Nations Conference in New York. Reports from the tutors and organisers of this event were unanimous in their glowing praise for the depth of his knowledge, his research skills and his speaking ability, and his individual award at this international event attests to this outstanding performance at an international level.
While all the accolades and achievements are impressive indeed, it must be acknowledged that Dexter has not simply used a natural talent for his own benefit. His achievements have necessitated many hours of dedicated research, the extensive honing of skills, the dealing with disappointments and many personal sacrifices. Throughout his College debating career, Dexter has been instrumental in establishing College's reputation and has brought significant credit to the school. For these reasons, he is a worthy Honours candidate.

KARATE May 2009:
York Senior was selected to represent Border JKA at the South Africa National Karate Championship at the Standard Bank Arena in Jo'burg. He came second in South Africa at these championship, which is quite a remarkable achievement. Well done York!
Tuna Classic 2009:

During the last week of the holidays five College boys participated in the Tuna Classic in Port Elizabeth. Unfortunately the weather had the final say as three of the five fishing days were cancelled due to strong winds and rough seas. Two beautiful tuna in the 20 kg range were caught by Nic Fleischer and Tristin van Heteren. A number of smaller tuna and bonito were landed and Dane van Heteren caught a beautiful Mako shark which caused a lot of consternation on the deck before it was successfully released. This was an experience of a lifetime for the boys. They had lots of fun and showed bravery in the face of very rough seas. Their behaviour was exemplary. Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Fleischer for making it all possible.
Three debating events took place over the Easter holidays:
After a term of intense preparation and research, eight Gr12 College boys set off for Ireland at the end of term to compete in the St Andrew's International Model United Nations Competition. Each individual had to serve on a committee where they had to advocate resolutions to problems in the world, (such as the situation in Somalia, Afghanistan and the DRC, nuclear weapons, energy, terrorism, drug trafficking and various Human Rights issues), in a manner consistent with the best interests of our assigned country, Indonesia. Decked out in their blues with added waistcoats, the College boys created quite a stir, and were on the receiving end of more female attention than they have ever experienced (for some inexplicable reason, the South African accent was deemed remarkably sexy!). Needless-to-say, the boys also impressed all with their knowledge and eloquence, with four of the group receiving 'Distinguished Delegate' awards in their respective committees (Abel, de Blocq, McLintock & Hart) and others shining in the General Assembly (Lawless & Buchalter) and the social networking (Delport & Jamjam) components. Over 100 teams competed in the event, many with considerable experience so the results were extremely gratifying: three of the teams were given 'Outstanding Delegation' awards and a further three awarded 'Highly Commended Delegation' - College's 'Highly Commended' award is thus a most pleasing achievement! Grateful thanks must go to Mr Molony for his valued involvement which made a significant contribution to the team's success.
Following on College's success at last year's National Finals of the SA Model United Nations Debating Competition, Dexter Munnik was selected to be a part of the South African team who participated in the Cornell International Model United Nations Competition in New York. While the team performed extremely well, Dexter shone out as one of the most exceptional participants seen in recent years. He received an individual award in recognition of his efforts and has even made his debut on South African television as a consequence! Congratulations, Dexter!
Arriving back in South Africa, Tim Abel and Andrew de Blocq met up with Richard Wilson and Dexter Munnik to participate in the World Schools-style African Schools Debating Championships held at St Johns in Johannesburg. This is undoubtedly the premier debating event in the country where the top debating schools are invited to participate alongside teams from various African countries. While we unfortunately got knocked out of the competition, Dexter managed to earn third place in the Top Speaker rankings. The excellent training offered and the exposure to speakers such as Tito Mboweni, Penny Heyns, Zackie Achmad and the newly-appointed Constitutional Court judge, Justice Edwin Cameron, made the event truly memorable. In addition, two of the team had the special privilege of meeting and getting photographs with Nelson Mandela!

DEBATING:
Shortly after the end of term last year, debaters from around the country gathered in Vereeniging to contest the World Schools National Championships. St Andrew's was well represented with 8 College boys participating - the most from any school. All performed impressively, with the seniors in real contention for the top spot. Unfortunately, an error of strategy caused their winning streak to be interrupted, which saw them being knocked out of the competition. While all our speakers performed admirably, special mention needs to be made of Jarrett Whitehead, who was placed in the top 5 national speaker rankings - an impressive feat!
Well done and thank you to all the boys who gave up part of their precious holiday-time to participate, thereby keeping St Andrew's debating reputation intact. [CMcI]
DEBATING:
The debaters had a busy weekend. Friday evening saw both the senior & junior College teams continue their success at Rhodes, where they covered issues such as ethics in scientific research and dropping charges against Jacob Zuma. On Saturday, College particpated in the Alex Road Debate Fest. College was put up against Riebeek, Collegiate, Muir and Queens (yes, they agreed to debate against us!) on issues of the rights of minors to confidentiality and overseas voting. College won all of their debates & enjoyed the day. The following boys won 'Best Speaker' awards & they are now called up on stage to receive their certificates: Richard Wilson; Khanyisa Jamjam; Dexter Munnik and Timothy Abel. Well done to all for a good weekend of debating!
Debating:
Friday (6 March) evening saw the commencement of the Grahamstown Debating League at Rhodes where teams had to grapple with topics dealing with “performance-enhancing drugs in sport” and “establishing sex industries in developing countries”. The College campaign got off to a positive starts with both junior and senior teams winning their debates.
Chris Dales is the vice captain of the St. Andrew's Angling Club who has been fishing since his earliest memories (he joined the Natal Angling Association when he was 10, at the age of 12 he made the Natal Junior Angling Team and at the age of 14 he made the A side and has represented them for the last two years). Chris has spent a great part of his life fishing all over South Africa and particularly remembers a trip to Mapelane where he landed the junior record for a Diamond Skate of 60 kg. He loves fishing because it takes you to interesting places all over South Africa where many new friendships are made. Chris looks forward to being part of the St. Andrew's Angling Club and sharing his knowledge with his fellow Andreans. He wants to help the College Anglers to up their skills so that they are able to compete in the Angling League. Here he is with a beautiful Ragged Tooth Shark which he caught on a recent College fishing trip at Cannon Rocks.
Debating Provincial Tournament 13-15 May 2011:
On Friday, 200 debaters descended on the Centenary Hall for the 2011 Eastern Cape Provincial Championships which took place over the weekend.
After 3 rounds of intense debate, both the College A team and Junior team were well poised to make the break into the Semi-Finals; but unfortunately a strategic error on the part of the Seniors saw them eliminated and dropped to 8th position out of 46 teams.
The Junior team of Holmes, Wilkinson, Worral, Trugeon and Mawala defeated a strong DSG team in the Semi-Final and, in a tense final, beat a fiery Hudson Park to be crowned Eastern Cape Champions for the second year running.
James Holmes was included in the 5 member Eastern Cape Team to compete in the National Championship in October. Well done to all who participated.

Debating Tour to Ireland:
On 16 April Xan Atkins, Litha Bakumeni, Declan Williamson, Chris de Blocq, MJ Rosslee, Grant Rautenbach and Greg Slack joined Mr Molony and Mr Cuyler at OR Tambo International Airport to begin the final stage of their first Model United Nations Debating Competition which was to take place in Dublin, Ireland.
It was an experience they had been preparing for, for the best part of 6 months: In total over 200 hours of research; in excess of 1000 pages of notes; more than 20 meetings - and still they knew not what awaited them at the Royal Marine Hotel, overlooking the Irish Sea.
St Andrew's College was to represent the Philippines against 108 other delegations comprising of more than 750 delegates from 17 different countries. From Austria to Turkey; the UK to The USA; Bahrain to Finland, College was the only representative from Africa to attend the 21st Annual SAIMUN.
The shock wave of 750 students vying for recognition, desperately trying to create allegiances, networking with anyone that would listen, was awe-inspiring. NEC ASPERA TERENT indeed! And the difficulties were many: Many of the delegates knew each other from previous competitions; most had attended at least 3 in the last 2 years... All 7 College boys were novices.
After 4 days of intense debate, 8 resolutions drafted by the SAC delegation were passed by the approval panel, with 1 making it all the way to the General Assembly. The die was cast and all that remained was the award ceremony:
Both Xan Atkins and MJ Rosslee were ranked in the top 5 percent of the delegates and received an "Honourable Mention" by the conference's Secretary General. The SAC team was placed in the top 6 of the 108 competing teams, also placing them as a delegation in the top 5 percent. A great achievement by all accounts.
After the conclusion of the competition, the group moved to the centre of Dublin city to visit some of the sites that make the Emerald Isle famous including the world renowned Guinness Storehouse and The Jameson's distillery which were among the favourites.
Congratulations to al 7 boys; not just on their fantastic achievements, but also for their commitment to excellence and their drive to succeed.
