I joined the College staff in 2002, my first teaching appointment, after turning down a contract with accounting firm KPMG in Johannesburg. Having studied to become a Chartered Accountant at Rhodes University (1999 - 2001), it was a life-changing decision for me, and one that I have not regretted. I have since completed my PGCE (2003) through UNISA and currently teach accounting to Grade 10-12 learners. I grew up in Grahamstown, was schooled at St Andrew's Prep and St Andrew's College and am a product of Upper House, making it even more exciting for me to be back here. After completing matric I spent a year at Bedford School in England, helping out at their International Study Centre which caters for overseas students who come to learn English before being allowed to make the move to main stream classes. Meeting learners from many of the Asian countries, Russia, Spain, Brazil, Angola, Yugoslavia and many other European countries made this an interesting experience and it was wonderful to see learners move on and flourish in the main schools. Sport has always played a large part in my life and during my time at College I have been MIC of squash, cricket and golf. I have coached the 1st XI cricket for the past 6 years and coach the under 14A rugby side. When possible I play as much competitive golf as I can and currently play off a 2 handicap. It is wonderful to be back in Upper, seeing how things have evolved and changed for the better over time. The boys are passionate about the house; they want to be here and they want to excel in all that they do. The challenge is to get the boys to channel this passion in the right direction, to respect/celebrate each others differences and to become well-rounded individuals who are willing to serve others.
