St Andrew’s College –Policy on HIV/AIDS 2005
- PREMISES
Learners with HIV/AIDS should lead as full a life as possible and should not be denied the opportunity to receive an education which will fulfill their potential. Likewise, educators with HIV/AIDS should lead as full a professional life as possible with the same rights and opportunities as other educators and with no unfair discrimination being practised against them. - EDUCATION
An ongoing AIDS education programme should be implemented for all members of the school – learners, parents, teachers, administration and service staff to provide life skills education on an ongoing basis. It should be aimed at giving accurate and up to date information so that the correct preventative measures will be maintained and so that empathy with those with the disease will be encouraged. It should aim to allay excessive fears of the epidemic, to reduce the stigma attached to it and to instil non-discriminatory attitudes towards persons with HIV/AIDS as well as ensuring the acquisition of age-appropriate knowledge and skills for protection from HIV infection. - DISCLOSURE
Any individual with HIV/AIDS or, in the case of a minor, his/her parents, is free to disclose such information voluntarily but may not be compelled to do so. Voluntary disclosure would be welcomed, particularly in the case of boarders, to enable counselling and other appropriate support to be given. - NON-DISCRIMINATION
No learner or member of staff with or perceived to have HIV/AIDS may be unfairly discriminated against. - A SAFE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
The school will as far as reasonably possible, implement precautions to effectively eliminate the risk of transmission of all blood-borne pathogens, including HIV, in the school environment. - DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF LEARNERS, EDUCATORS AND PARENTS
The Code of Conduct adopted for learners at this school should include provisions regarding the unacceptability of behaviour that may create the risk of HIV transmission and information on HIV/AIDS should be available and accessible to a learner and his or her parents and to staff members
