HOUSE PREFECT PORTFOLIO
A House Prefect should display the following characteristics and skills:
Sound morals and values, be a role model, have good inter-personal skills, organizational skills, empathy, patience and maturity.
A House Prefect will be required to:
• Supervise the House in general and their allocated dorm specifically
• Promote a healthy work ethic
• Be prepared to spend time with the boys in the dorm and give guidance and advice
• Lead and manage the vertical tutor group
• Fulfill any other responsibilities or tasks as requested by the Headmaster or Housemaster
SCHOOL PREFECT PORTFOLIOS
ACADEMIC PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The Academic Prefect reports to the Deputy Headmaster in his capacity as Director of Studies. The Prefect and the Deputy Headmaster meet on a fortnightly basis. Issues to be addressed in the portfolio include:
• the operation of the timetable and the school week
• academic planning and administration – both for the term and the year
• the quality of teaching and learning
• the monitoring of pupils with learning difficulties
• the monitoring of pupils who are put on academic detention
• ICT and the Library in teaching and learning
CHAPEL PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The holder of this portfolio must be a Christian who has a desire to see the Chapel as central to the well-being of every Andrean. This person will form a committee on which every house is represented. This committee will meet with the Chaplain on a regular basis to discuss spiritual matters pertaining to the school. This will include brainstorming ways to make the chapel/ chaplaincy more relevant to the students, what to do with funds collected, the DLC meetings, sacristan duties, prayer meetings, and discipline in the chapel etc.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The person who applies for this position should have the following qualities:
• Leadership
• Imagination
• Ability to organize
• Ability to delegate
• Good administration skills
• Good time management skills
• Willingness to serve others
The position will require you to:
1. Head the President’s Award committee
This will involve:
a. Arranging regular meetings throughout the term
b. Put together agenda’s for the meetings
c. Chair the meetings
d. Oversee the planning, preparation and organization of projects
e. Improve and sustain the profile of the President’s Award
f. Mobilize and communicate with the committee
2. Liaise with the Community Engagement Director
This will involve:
a. Meeting on a weekly basis
b. Writing reports of activities
3. Set Goals for the year
4. Represent the school when appropriate
5. Assist with the roll-out of Community Engagement activities in the school that do not fall under President’s Award
CULTURE AND CEREMONIES PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The Prefect in charge of Culture & Ceremonies should have an interest in the Arts and a broad knowledge of the cultural and ceremonial calendar of the school, as well as the allied Extra-Mural activities. He should also have organizational ability and vision for creating meaningful experiences for the Andrean family.
His function is primarily to liaise with the Teacher-in-Charge, and assist with the design and execution of Cultural and Ceremonial moments in the life of the school, including theatrical productions, exhibitions, concerts, Youth Day, Founder’s Day Service, the John Axe Arts Programme, Speech Day and Chapel Services, where necessary.
DAYBOY PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The aim of this portfolio is to:
• Encourage/ensure optimal integration of all dayboys into all aspects of school life.
• Establish and maintain communication between dayboys and decision makers to ensure that the concerns, needs and so on of the dayboys are met.
• Ensure that the parents of day boys appreciate the value and importance of the integration of their son into the house and school structure, and that they understand what that entails.
• Ensure – having made the point above – that the houses are able to cater for the dayboys in terms of prep space and so on.
DISCIPLINE PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The holder of this portfolio would have the following duties and characteristics
• Must possess certain personal qualities, integrity and achievements which give him the stature required to inspire others to follow and listen to him.
• Must communicate easily and have a genuine open and honest relationship with the staff member in charge of discipline portfolio.
• Must be prepared to discipline his peers (same rules apply to all).
• Must be firm but fair.
• Must attend a weekly meeting with the Head of Discipline.
• Must be prepared to be the eyes and ears for the Head of Discipline.
• Must meet with Heads of Houses at least three times per term to discuss disciplinary trends and common problems in Houses.
• Must realise that this is not a passive or easy portfolio but one involving specific and sometimes difficult obligations or duties.
• Must possess some or all of the following qualities:
Natural leadership; exemplary conduct; responsibility; reliability; maturity; moral courage; high personal standards; self-discipline and control; loyalty; commitment; sense of humour and sense of proportion.
• Must oppose any form of bullying, victimisation or unfair discrimination.
• Must be prepared to become involved in all facets of school life requiring discipline:
IT PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The portfolio holder will be responsible for the SAC Labs and to be the liaison person between the learners and the ICT committee. This would require setting up a group of Lab Assistance which would monitor the lab usage during prep, attending ICT committee meetings and general liaison with the Technical Computer department and Head of Department. The Portfolio person would be responsible for look after the lab – its appropriate use and enforcement of the Computer user policy. This includes not eating in the lab, not downloading inappropriate files etc.
On the more technical side we would like the Portfolio holder to maintain and continue to support the webpage and the Linux server which has been setup this year and would support this person to gain the knowledge to fulfill this requirement.
MARKETING PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The main duty of the holder of this portfolio will be to assist the Marketing office during Reunions, Open Days and with visits from prospective pupils and parents. Another duty would be newsgathering and reporting for The Scene.
The incumbent should have:
• Good interpersonal skills and be comfortable in adult company,
• be able to communicate well with younger boys,
• be able to address small groups of people with confidence,
• be willing to learn about news reporting and to write well,
• meet deadlines,
• be willing to learn about the special features and places of College,
• be able to assist in raising the profile of College through example and
• Attend at least three Marketing workshops.
OUTDOOR EDUCATION PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The aim of this portfolio is to:
• Promote outdoor education at St Andrew’s College and expose boys to healthy outdoor activities and foster a respect for the environment.
• Encourage team-building, leadership and outreach in the Eastern Cape.
• To assist with the planning and operation the Fish River Journey, the Grade 11 Long walk and other Grade activities
PASTORAL CARE PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The holder of this portfolio will tackle important issues concerning spiritual, emotional and mental development in the school. The health, social and moral behaviour of the school as well as issues of care and bullying will need to be addressed. In addition the portfolio prefect will act as a link between the pupils and The Centre and will be required to take part in peer counselling course.
SPORT PREFECT PORTFOLIO
The Portfolio Prefect responsible for Sport will serve as a link between the Director of Sport, the Games Committee Chairperson, the Teachers in Charge of Sport and the boys. In order to do this effectively, the Portfolio Prefect will be tasked with forming a Committee of boys which will assist him in this task. This Committee should have a Grade 11 as a Deputy and should be representative of all the grades. The Portfolio Prefect will chair this committee. The Director of Sport will be an ex officio member of the Committee. The purpose of the Sports portfolio would be to make a positive contribution to the ethos, co-ordination and development of sport at the College.
