St Andrew's College 2012 Tutors

ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE TUTOR SYSTEM

This document has come about after extensive process where past documents were analysed and discussion took place with staff in general, focus groups led by Marietta Potgieter and in Housemaster Committee meetings.

 

WORKINGS OF THE SYSTEM

 

·         The tutor groups will be set horizontally.

 

·         The Tutor Period will take place on Monday where a manner of topics can be raised regarding academic, cultural, emotional, spiritual, general pupil development and current world issues.

 

·         Housemasters will not be tutors but will rather be responsible for the entire running of the process. Ensure that tutor system in the House runs smoothly, hierarchies remain suppressed and a feeling of goodwill exists between all tutor groups.

 

·         Housemasters to meet with tutors once a week on a Thursday for approximately 25 minutes during the school period before Chapel. This can be used to plan ahead for the Monday Tutor period, to discuss issues being raised in the House and College and to ensure effectiveness of all tutors and the system.

 

·         Housemaster to ensure effective orientation of all new tutors

 

TASKS OF THE TUTOR

Together with the Housemaster we expect the tutor to play a central role and “hands-on” approach in each of the pupils’ lives under their care.

1.            Academic support

·         Goal setting

--             Realistic goals, achievements, problems, planning

·         Subject choices

                                                                --             Are they correct?

--             Any changes contemplated?

--             The procedure

·         Planning work schedules

--             During the Term. How?

--             In preparation for the exams. Why?

 

·         Remedial proposals

--             Extra lessons

·         Close monitoring of Reports, Term Orders, Cycle tests, homework diaries, books, and files.

2.            Spiritual support  --         Ensuring pupils attend chapel twice a week and consult with

Father Gary over any matters of concern

 

3.            Cultural Support   --         Promotion of cultural, musical, and club involvement

 

4.             Sport Support       --         Make sure all commitments are covered

Gr. 8-10           ----       2 sports

Gr.11-12          ----       1 sport

5.            Social Support

--             Personal issues/working with the Centre

6.            Tutor Outings

--            Plan a meaningful outing once a term (Simply eating out is

                 discouraged)

7.            Meal Duties           --        

 

Each tutor will be on duty once a week and this will require:

·         Being present and playing a supervisory role at lunch

 

·         Being present and playing a supervisory role at supper

 

8.             Prep Duties

 

Each tutor will be on duty once a week and this will require:

·         Ensuring the general effectiveness of the Prep period  

 

·         Particular attention to be  placed on own tutor group

 

·         Being present and supervising prayers and roll calls

 

9.             Contact With Parents

 

Tutors will be expected to:

 

·         Meet with parents at the beginning of the year – particularly applicable to Newboy tutors at first interview with Housemaster.

 

·         All tutors to make contact with parents of tutor group after first week – short introductory email.

 

·         Be available over parent/teachers meetings to discuss overall academic, social, cultural and sporting development.

 

·         Discuss any matters of serious breaches of discipline or emotional distress with Housemaster before contacting parents.

 

·         Writing a Tutor Report based on pupil’s academic progress.
