Fiddler on the Roof
A large talented cast which includes 150 pupils from St Andrew’s College and the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) is set to perform the delightful musical Fiddler on the Roof at the Guy Butler Theatre,
1820s Settlers Monument, on 3, 4, 6 and 7 June 2005 in Grahamstown.
Directed by Bauke Snyman, from DSG, the play was inspired from the book by Joseph Stein and is based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem. It is set in the small Russian village of Anatevka on the eve of the Russian Revolution, and tells the humorous yet heartbreaking story of the dairyman Tevye, who is trying to maintain the simplicities of his traditional life while his five daughters are growing up quickly.
“It is a new interpretation of the play that focuses more on the plight of the Jews especially now with the commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz. In this production we have tried to make it relevant to the contemporary South African audience by including exciting choreography and audio visual effects and at the same time not sacrificing the well known songs and essence of this classic. The show offered learners from grade 8 to Matric the opportunity to work alongside teachers from the schools and has formed an excellent learning platform,” said Snyman.
The highly acclaimed SAC and DSG orchestra, conducted by Justin Wardle, will accompany the cast. Familiar songs include, ‘If I Were a Rich Man’, ‘Matchmaker, Matchmaker’, ‘Sunrise, Sunset,’ and ‘To Life’, while the DSG dance studio, led by Hermien Potgieter, has created dance routines that will keep the audience enthralled.
This is a family production which contains all the essential ingredients which made it such a popular Broadway hit - although it addresses a very serious issue it never loses its entertainment value.
