NEC ASPERA TERRENT . EMBRACING NEW FRONTIERS
Dramatic Productions

Drama has played an integral part of school life at St Andrew's College from the early Christmas Plays dating back to 1878 until the present day.  For a list of plays recorded in The Andrean magazines click here

This extract from "A Place to Celebrate" published in 2005 gives an idea of the variety of productions that have been staged in the Centenary Hall and beyond ...

"Here Michael Arnold staged his mammoth productions, including his four-hour Hamlet in the dead of winter. John Axe's booming voice and naughty humour directed more than 20 plays in this hall, some of his beloved Gilbert and Sullivans included. In the early days of collaboration with DSG, Sue Hummel chose the Centenary Hall for her Vivat Regina. And for more than two decades Glynn (Dusty) Kenyon exploited this space in every imaginable - and sometimes unimaginable! - way.

Dusty's plays were miracles of double-quick preparation and virtually single-handed design. At any time during the six weeks or so of rehearsal, "the Wizard" could be found - or NOT found! - in the bowels of the backstage area or in the ceiling, hammering, constructing, wiring. He brought forth among others, a towering Agamemnon in the round; a delightful Much Ado on a tiered stage; a Catch 22 which had the audience on stage and the players on the floor; a moving Royal Hunt of the Sun; and an Oedipus that used the full expanse of the hall as a cosmic stage, upon which the pitiful tragedy played itself out.

In 1987 Dusty ventured outdoors to use the Clock Tower as a backdrop for his Richard II. The production included horses, and live music from the nearby Chapel organ. (The audacity of this was capped only by a later John Axe production of an outdoor King Lear which featured live thunder on cue!) The 21st century has seen drama, under Aidan Smith, move to the theatre in the 1820 Settlers Monument, where College's annual theatrical extravaganza has become an item on Grahamstown's cultural calendar".
