John Powell : Designer in Residence : July 2007
The design of a brick could be taken for granted but it is basic building elements like the brick which inspire Johannesburg based architect John Powell. Co-ordinating the development of alternative and innovative building systems is what drives Powell, and he relayed this passion to Grade 10 and 11 pupils at St Andrew’s and the DSG whilst he was a guest design lecturer from 16 to 17 July.
“I tasked the pupils to create a user-friendly interlocking block or brick,” said Powell, who is a parent at the school. “The concepts they have come up with are very interesting.”
The brief also requested pupils to consider a renewable resource for their product. Powell’s company, ‘4 site Powerbuild’ is filling a gap in the building industry which promotes architectural design and material which is quick to assemble and more affordable for what he terms the ‘gap market’.
Powell is very impressed with the subject ‘Design’ which is captivating many pupils at the two schools. “It is the ultimate outcome-based subject providing multi-skills,” said Powell.
