Schonland Memorial Lecture

Prof. Ed SturrockAs part of the academic focus of the 150 celebrations, Old Andrean Professor Edward Sturrock delivered the 2005 Schonland Memorial Lecture entitled 'Towards the Heart of Drug Design' on 8 August.

The lecture, which is held annually in remembrance of Dr Selmar Schonland and Sir Basil Schonland, is hosted by the Royal Society of South Africa.

The Royal Society kindly allowed College to share the event in 2005 to mark the school's landmark anniversary.

Prof Sturrock attended College in the 1970s after which he studied at the University of Cape Town and completed his PhD in 1994. He currently leads the UCT Metalloprotease Research Group which has, in collaboration with a research team from Bath University, mapped the first 3-D crystal structure of angiotensin- converting enzyme (ACE).

This ground-breaking research paves the way for the development of drugs that can be used to treat high blood pressure, heart attacks, heart failure and related ailments.

His lecture focused on the fact that, in light of recent withdrawals of drugs and reports of adverse events, such as those associated with antidepressants, the pharmaceutical industry has come under a great deal of pressure to deliver safer drugs.
