Acclaimed composer visits St Andrew’s
Internationally acclaimed composer and conductor, Bongani Ndodana- Breen, visited his educational roots namely St Andrew’s College from 11 to 12 October 2005. Currently residing in Canada he made time in his busy schedule to interact with College and DSG learners and shared his expertise with senior music students.
After matriculating Ndodana-Breen furthered his studies at Rhodes and Stellenbosch Universities. He was awarded the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Music in 1998, one of South Africa’s most prestigious arts prizes. This award led to a commission for his opera-oratorio Uhambo that he conducted at the National Arts Festival. Thereafter he went abroad with his exceptional musical talent and received high recognition in the United States and Canada. He has written a wide range of music, symphonies, operas, chamber and vocal music at the age of only 30.
During his visit at St Andrew’s he conducted a rehearsal for the wind orchestra and senior orchestra. He emphasised to the learners the importance of listening and hearing all the instruments in the orchestra. “As an orchestra you are interpreting a common message to an audience – you are in essence one big collective mind. Try to think as one mind,” said Ndodana-Breen.
Commenting on the future of St Andrew’s he said, “College has a great thing going. For the next 150 years I hope they keep on going to make it better and better.”
