Sir Basil Schonland was born in Grahamstown and attended St Andrew's Prep and College. He is one of the most illustrious
schollars College has produced. He matriculated at the age of 14, coming first in the Cape Province. He obtained a PhD from Cambridge University, was head of the Bernard Price Institute, the first Chancellor of Rhodes University, the first President of the CSIR, and later Head of the Atomic Research Centre at Harwell, England. He was knighted in 1960.
To commemorate the centenary of his birth, Dr Geoff Garrett, President of the CSIR, was invited for a two day visit to College as the "Schonland Honoured Personality".
Dr Geoff Garrett is also a Cambridge graduate in the field of physical metallurgy. He was professor at the University of the Witwatersrand and visiting professor at several overseas universities, notably Oxford and Sheffield and universities in Canada and the USA.
At College, Dr Garrett gave the keynote address to the Std 8 to 10 pupils of DSG and College, entitled "Are scientists real people?" He listened to an innovative mathematics presentation by Std 7 pupils and gave a public address entitled "Technology and education: a winning combination for a winning nation".
On Friday morning he gave a fascinating lecture to the Std 6 and 7 pupils of the two schools: "The fun of being a scientist", concentrating on the use and properties as structural material of metals, ceramics and polymers and gave a discussion on research methodology.
